  • There are some amazing stories regarding Sammy Swindell's brief yet arguably spectacular Indy Car career. Sammy raced for AJ Foyt...and has great stories to tell about his time with Super Tex, one that includes Sammy's career-best Indy Car finish (9th at Pocono with teammate Foyt/4th). Sammy also raced for Pat Patrick with a little less than desirable experience, some of it revolving around Emerson Fittipaldi, whose win at Michigan came under a car that had a great deal of input from Sammy. Sammy starts the show with some of his thoughts on present-day sprint car racing to include Kyle Larson, before leaning off toward his mom and dad, and their circa 60-year marriage. This will conclude my series "At Home With Sammy Swindell"... hope you enjoyed it; thanks for watching the #HistoryMysteryMan! #SammySwindell #AJFoyt #Indy500 #EmersonFittipaldi #IndyCar #PoconoRaceway

Sammy is a legend. He had so much talent behind the wheel but even more at everything else. Any could do it all. Not many compare to him in that way. Blessed to have lived in the Sammy, Steve, Doug era because you won't see it again.

@HistoryMysteryMan I had some interesting chats with him at diff times. In the 90's I had an Outlaw team with some great drives. Won lots of races with diff drivers. Won Friday night at the nationals. Sammy had some input in that. Only driver I wish I'd had the experience of having in my car would have been Bobby Davis.... very gifted driver.

Absolutely great series. Thank you for this. I had the opportunity when I was a boy to see AJ Foyt race. My father took me to the old Trenton Speedway, a few miles from our home to watch the Indy Cars race. Foyt crashed in the fourth turn and plastic from his car landed right beside our van where we were watching from on top at the forth turn fence. I climbed down and grabbed it to keep as a souvenir. However it didn't take long for track officials or crew, not sure which, to come and take it from me. Sure was a bummer because I remember it to this day. Little did I know at the time the tracks days were numbered. Just assumed we would go again but the track closed a few years later. Just as AJ is the granddaddy legend of cart racing, Sammy is the same to sprint car racing. Legends in their own time.

Thanks Nick...very cool stories, and I appreciate you sharing them here. I went to Trenton for the Indy car races when I was a little boy. They were short on fields, so my dad entered his USAC championship, front-engine dirt car to make a little $. AJ is legend...

I have to say THANK YOU for this incredible interview. Sammy will always bey favorite Sprint car driver. I feel fortunate to have watched this man race since 1977 and he never disappoints. The anticipation leading to an upcoming race that Sammy would be driving was almost too much to bear. As I've gotten older I'm just thankful I was able to witness one of the greatest drivers imo from the time he was til now. This was absolutely special. Wonderful job sir. 👍😀🏁🏁🏎️

Don, I just want to personally thank you for all your time and effort putting this series together. I truly enjoyed watching it. Loved the pictures of Sammy and AJ. Sammy seems to enjoy talking about his Indy Car era. Without question, I think Sammy would have been even better ....with better open wheel equipment. And I loved the picture of Jimmy Hall's winged Chaparral. I was really into slot car racing growing up. That was my favorite car in my collection! Anyway, thanks again Don. Great series. And what a great driver in Sammy.

What a nice surprise! I might not have been paying close enough attention, but I thought the fourth episode with Sammy was going to be the last one. I didn't know much about his time racing Indy cars so this interview filled in a lot of previously unknown information. When he mentioned listening to "classic rock," I was hoping he would mention some of the artists that he enjoyed. I soon found out that young fellows like Sammy (and you) were into more modern musical groups. I guess I'm a little older and still like the music of the 60s and 70s. (I've got a large collection of RUclips videos that I've downloaded so I can WATCH in addition to LISTEN to them perform the music of that era.)
