@@MGTMaxGamesTech i did follow your full guide and it does work. However, it requires me to log into windows mode first and put password on it and then it works in gaming mode. Do you have any idea why would be the case?
Actually the SD is so low powered I believe it uses the same amount of power a Windows PC would in sleep mode. But yeah it would be nice if it would take care of all that on its own.
I added a 5 tb external hard drive. But I have to go to desktop every reboot for it to mount.

Thanks, that was an easy to follow guide. A bit difficult reading the text on my Steam Deck, but I figured it out in the end.
I really wish they would auto mount NTFS external drives, so I can watch my movies on my deck.
Worked for me, only problem is I have to enter desktop mode to add my external ssd to steam downloads on every shutdown.

Is it possible to keep games downloaded on the External Drive when switching modes? I have my 2TB HDD configured for TV mode, and whenever I remove my Steam Deck from the Dock, it automatically uninstalls any games that were stored on the 2TB HDD. I figured it’d give me an error when playing in Handheld mode, preventing from playing the games, and then make them accessible again when I go back to TV mode. But I have to manually redownload all those games when switching from Handheld mode to TV mode. Super annoying.
Can you help me when I turn off my steam deck and I turn it back on it doesnt show up unless I go to the desk top? Why is that. Then when I go back to the menu is there again? Anyway to fix that.

Hold on I heard this 3.4 update messes with the path location of our micro SD card essentially making Non - Steam Games and Emudeck not working. Some say there was a hotfix for it and it got reverted but I don't see it in the patch notes. Can someone confirm if Emudeck and Non-Steam games still work for them AFTER updating to 3.4 ? Until then I think I will skip this update

Just ordered a 4tb nvme ssd which I am going to put into a small enclosure which I will then attach to the back of my steam deck. If I had known about this a little earlier I wouldn't have wasted money getting multiple 512gb and 1tb micro sd cards.

For some reason I often have issues where I attempt a startup without the drives inside like in handheld mode, the steam deck will not boot up for som reason, and I have idea how to fix that

Wow I was looking for ways to add Saturn roms to the Deck but this was much more fun surprise. Really love how learning the deck adds to your Linux exp lol.

Question: so around the 4:45 mark you mention how to set it to automatically mount… my steam deck requires the password before mounting every single time I plug it in. Is there some way to bypass this? It means I have to exit to desktop everytime I boot up my SD just to put in the password
I solved the same problem with a factory reset for Steam Deck.
"read only file system". i came to this video because i can no longer save files to my external drive. this was working fine just a few days ago. im not sure what changed because nothing should have, ive been using my deck in portable gaming mode for the last few days. not sure whats going on help would be appreciated.

This happens to me too! I don't have a real solution, but it looks like you have to switch to desktop mode and type in your password again, so if we can figure out permissions for no password, then our problem should be solved!
Currently Can't be used in gaming mode, so beware..... not reliable
It can be used also in gaming mode as long as you start once the desktop mode and switch back to gaming mode.

That is not new, there was community script for ext-hdd for steamOS before it became official via Valve
It’s new since is official and you don’t have to use some unknown script (that may alter or not the security of your device). Also, that unofficial script can mess your fstab settings and you have to reinstall everything. That community script wasn’t safe at all. Tested.
What about performance? Is there an improvement in games?...

I formatted my 4T SSD to EXT4 on my PC and i didn’t have to set any permissions it just works as soon as i plug it in my Deck ,
For me it didn’t work without permissions granted. Steam was unable to select hdd and as far as I remember, it displayed something related to writing not allowed.

@@MGTMaxGamesTech So it seems they changed something . I updated to stable 3.4 and now my SSD is not showing . I went back to preview and it showed . Today i updated to preview 3.4.3 which has the fix for Forza 5 and my SSD doesn't show anymore , so it seems i now need to do the permissions . Must be something Valve needs to fix because it was working out of the box before.
