    No life vest, no personal epirb, not latched on... Not only stupid but gives a bad message to other sailors. Professional sailors should be taking safety more seriously, not just for themselfs but for the others that look up to them

      Before this incident OBR Amory Ross onboard Vestas 11th Hour Racing wrote: There’s always a readjustment to high speed sailing after drifting for so long. The boat gets completely re-stacked, you have to re-familiarize yourself with wet weather gear, 22-degrees of heel, and the safe practice of firmly planting a hand and foot at all times(c).

      Indeed sheer recklessness. The guy was incredibly lucky: daylight, no foul weather, many on deck, relatively warm water. Also recklessness of the VOR organization: how many Hans Horrevoets' (died MOB in the 2006 edition) does it take for the VOR organizers to make wearing MOB beacons mandatory at all time?

    • @ВячеславПетрович-я2т
      @ВячеславПетрович-я2т 7 лет назад +2

      Really, incredible luck. Day, skipper on wheel, warm water. In sea walks front of the beach you need to put lifejacket on board. But in an offshore VOR it is not required!

    • @BerenddeBoer
      @BerenddeBoer 7 лет назад

      Hhhmmm, epirb or the best 8 sailors in the world on my boat, what a hard decision. Wearing a life jacket 24 hours or warm water and a crew that can pick me up in 5 minutes, I just don't know what to choose.

    • @pierotintori
      @pierotintori 7 лет назад +7

      Berend de Boer that's a silly way to think about it. What if he had hit his head when falling over (or cold water shock) there would be nothing to keep him above water and the best sailors in the world would be no help.

    Skipper is partly to blame. He is responsible for the safety of his crew. I know they are all tired and that is when mistakes happen. Lucky not to have the first casualty of the race. Well done crew for getting him back safely onboard.

    Where is the footage of him falling overboard?
    Because last Volvo the OBR's could press a button and the cameras save the last footage leading up to the incident, like the OBR on Vestas did when they hit a reef.

    • @jamesmcintyre79
      @jamesmcintyre79 7 лет назад

      I think it's only the stern cam that is on the recording loop - which probably wouldn't have caught him in frame... If the mast cam is also on the recording loop there's every chance the foresails where blocking the cameras view of the outrigger as well.

    Wow u can't make that up....they already had a man overboard on a leg before and now someone is dead. What is going on there? The captain has a lot to answer for...he is responsible for that mess. I wouldn't let that man on a boat again.

    • @burningflame5527
      @burningflame5527 6 лет назад +1

      pocketdynamo Witt wasn’t the reason for any over boards, it was just tough luck for fish. And the other one was just stupidity

  • @brunocpc

    it looks so fast! How fast is this boat going on? Anyone has any idea? Is it engine-powered or only wind?

    • @ruudgrutto5051
      @ruudgrutto5051 7 лет назад +2

      They were going just over 20 knots without engine, which is about 40 km/h. For the rescue they used engine.

    • @brunocpc
      @brunocpc 7 лет назад

      thanks for the info, bro.
      So, after the rescue, when the lad is already on board and "giving interview", they're at 40km/h?

    • @ruudgrutto5051
      @ruudgrutto5051 7 лет назад +1

      Yup. Looks faster because the deck is low above the water. But they are going easy here, because they can do 25-33 knots (45-60km/h) under good conditions (downwind).

    Sinceramente i've Starter to Saul when i was a kid, me dad Said One time ONLY:". If you are on a boat make sure that you wear flashing colors! Outside there is ONLY Water!"
    Their not Kids anymore, but not imortal too.

  • @d4videna

    Not clear why professional racers don’t wear life jackets and ais while on deck. Every big franchise like driving riding cycling has successfully introduced them. Same goes for all of us who drive, ride and commute. It just becomes an habit and you stop noticing it after a while

    Watching this now when they're talking about 20 knots in the black and it would have been much worse.... These sailors need to wear better safety gear and gear that you can see from the distance (flashing lights etc..)

  • @PitWChannel

    Will they face an investigation from the race jury for using the engine?

    • @XiaoYuanHao
      @XiaoYuanHao 7 лет назад +6

      Pit W. I honestly don't think so, the engine was only used to rescue a crew member, even then it was only used to SLOW the boat, it definitely didn't give them any help for the race!

    • @stephenellis797
      @stephenellis797 7 лет назад +4

      They will face an investigation but for certain they will be commended on their action, not penalised. First class recovery.
