Something i feel like nobody mentions is that in Luis’ lab there’s a file that mentions the people who will rescue him exchange for the Amber will also bring him some cigarettes, so when he first meets Leon and asks “you got a smoke?” he’s actually trying to see if Leon is part of Wesker’s group, and when Leon gives his answer of “You know those things’ll kill ya” Luis realizes that it’s a completely new player in this game going on between wesker, saddler, and umbrella. On repeat playthroughs this little detail always makes me smile
Thank you, I'm so glad someone else noticed this. It also recontextualizes his question in the OG game too. Makes me wonder if they always planned it to be code talk rather than him just being funny.
The way Luis' VA talked about the character made me legitimately tear up. His understanding of Luis and his interpretation of his psyche, and the way he delivered it was so moving.
Thank you so much. It really has been a blessing and an honor. I appreciate all the love, and thank you Suzi for thinking of me when you were making this amazing video.❤🙏👏🙌 P.S.: I will consider the audiobook😉🫶
@@thevillainousqueenofhearts4976imagine if they were a trio in a game it would’ve been perfect, Luis the brains, Leon the bronze, and Ashley to be Ashley
The idea of Krauser carrying a yandere photo of Leon at all times just makes me giggle. Like Saddler yells at Krauser for being a weird knife pervert, and Krauser just pouts in a tent holding that photo. “He doesn’t understand. Only YOU understand, rookie.”
“Not looking good eh, my friend? And such a loss to the ladies of the world.” Is easily my favorite line in the whole game. Even as he’s dying he’s a charmer.
Fun fact, Don Quijote is a mandatory reading in almost every high school in Spain, so reading and watching so many references to it in the game made me so happy and nostalgic as a Spaniard.
I know most people don’t think of RE4 as being a scary or disturbing game, but the story of the village’s humble beginnings all the way to its inevitable demise and destruction of its people is incredibly disturbing and sad. Also shoutout to Ashley’s voice actor. Her shouts of encouragement in the shooting range are absolutely adorable. I love the line “show’em what you got.” It’s too cute.
i agree, the village's story could make an amazing horror movie script (not a resident evil movie, just a random movie without leon, umbrella, or any RE character). the whole mendez backstory is awesome.
SO MANY people I've watched play the game missed out on the fact that the little boy in the photo's and notes was Luis. And it's such a special connection tying him to the village that I'm so glad you brought attention to it. It's one of my favorite tidbits in the game.
I always hate the part where you leave him. He’s a fictional character in a video game but I can’t help myself from stopping and staring back at him until the point of no return and hating knowing that his body will remain alone in an underground tunnel. His last exchange with Leon is him looking for hope that someone like him could change and the slightest possibility that he could die as a redeemed person as he’s scared of dying a bad man is heartbreaking.
“people can change, right?” 😢 to me it was a sort of guilty, regretful expression. like genuine remorse for what he had done, but mixed with the hope that he had done something better, and the knowledge that he wasn’t going to be able to find out whether his effort paid off. that’s what these recent remakes have done to a lot of the characters, and what i love about them: characters who were originally one note still hit that note but with a full resonant harmony of supporting notes that affirm the original rather than rewrite it.
The game took me 18 years back, simpler times with no social media, just a GameCube, pizza and a bunch of kids scared stiff of Verdugo. I finished RE4R and started a Pro run right away. Now I've done 5 runs. This game is the definition of fun.
@@sludgerat444 don't take it negatively. More like differently, social media has had a huge number of positives since it's dawn, but there is a charm in an era where it was just sms and phonecalls at best.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed Ashley being terrified on the first two ramps of the Jet-Ski sequence, and then starting to giggle on the third and fourth.
I was just replaying the game last night for the first time in awhile and noticed that! It’s like she trusts Leon so much by that point that halfway through their escape she’s just “Leon has totally got this, mind as well enjoy the ride.” It also plays into her obvious bravery and understated thrill-seeking behavior.
1:33:50 I am so glad someone else noticed this. You can visibly see how much that line hits a nerve with Leon. Krauser just voiced exactly what Leon is afraid of. One of his deepest insecurities. Leon already feels like he can’t save anyone. He feels like he failed to save enough people in Raccoon City, and now he’s running out of time to save Ashley as well.
If you think about it i guess leon is a failed hero i understand why he fights tooth n nail to save ashley and even puts her first to get rid of the plagua he rather die then fail to save someone else die knowing he was moments away from living
@ricodontworryboutit3296 If we think about it too, Ashley was a way of fixing what he couldn't fix before. Saving the president's daughter means he saves the world, getting redemption for the city he wanted to protect. He then gets to let the past be the past in his own way.
Never realized how poetic krausers entrance was after Luis was struck by him, as if they were two personalities fighting each other in Leon’s consciousness; one man trying to redeem himself for what he couldn’t prevent and the other who writhes in the trauma he experiences and goes through a route of evil instead.
In the end, Leon decided to prevail through Luis' path and redeemed himself by being able to save someone, something he felt he couldn't do previously in RE2
'That was so bad' 😂 What a thing to say at the end of what I thought was the best video you've made to date. Mui bien Suzi. Also the Baby Eagle look suits you 😁
It's so refreshing hearing a woman say how awesome Ashley is in the remake after seeing so many female games journalists write about how disappointing she is, or how she missed the mark and wasn't a strong female character. To the point it made me wonder if we even played the same game. But I love to hear someone not only sing her praises, but actually explain in detail *why* she's a much better character this time around.
i agree with you so much omg. all the men criticizing her as a character are just mad she's her own person with her own past, motives, and mission instead of leon's lapdog
You know, now that you mentioned it, they could perfectly choose the remake of Code Veronica to also use as an opportunity to show the Umbrella's downfall.
If they got rid of some really bad gameplay elements of the original, like the moth hallway, CV could be redeemed _Editors' note: Claire was a waifu for a long time, but upon growing up and then playing CV, it was thoroughly disappointing_
Yeah i thought the exact same thing, with Umbrella being almost if not fully non existant by the time Leon goes to Spain, it could work out that Claire ends up in the last of Umbrellas leftover locations. If they start at the same time too then her sending Leon a message, Leon receiving that message shortly after escaping with Ashley, and contacting Chris could also make sense. On top of that (spoilers for Rem4ke here if youve somehow not finished it but are watching this video), with Wesker not having the plaga/amber sample from Ada, detouring to CV would make sense as Wesker would be searching for a base to develop Uroboros off of. They can give him greater plot relevance with this new order and also start to build him as the antagonist of the following 5 remake that I assume theyll likely make. And then as far as brand logistics go, it would make sense for the next remake title to focus on the other protagonist in RE2, plus the thing i said about building Wesker up as the big bad in the next remake title. The only thing is that i hope they dont go short and simple like with RE3, which is definitely a big fear i have for CV if it gets its spot in the limelight
That would really only be shown at the end with a time jump Code Veronica IIRC takes place somewhere in 1999, and Umbrella doesn't fully collapse until somewhere in the range of 2001-2003
I find it interesting that while Krauser is always calling Leon "Rookie", Leon calls Krauser by his name, UNTIL Leon beats Krauser, Krauser drops the "Rookie" and calls Leon by name while Leon calls him "Major". Yes, Leon called him "Major Krauser" when he was first introduced after throwing his knife at Luis, but ever since then, it looks like he doesn't see his Major there anymore until the twisted Krauser was defeated. Neat touch imo
One neat thing about Luis and his lab that I don't think people touch on, is that it isn't until he realizes that Saddler is, ya know, FUCKING CRAZY that he gets cold feet on the whole Plagas plan. In a note, he specifically mentions the treatment of Saddler's servants on the island as being his reason for not trusting Saddler to use Plagas responsibly, but never comments on the mind control itself being a bad thing in his opinion. My read on it was that, after Raccoon City, Luis felt so terrible about his role in all that destruction, and realizing that Umbrella's explicit goal to weaponize his work would've resulted in numerous other outbreaks just as bad as Raccoon City, that he was 100% on board with Los Illuminados' plan to take over the world. He was okay with the idea of using Plagas to eliminate war and conflict and studied them with that express goal in mind to make amends for his work at Umbrella. But once he saw how horribly Saddler treated his "flock," that's what caused him to try and escape and sabotage the plan. It makes his story even more tragic, imo, because he really thought he would be doing something good by helping Saddler to study Las Plagas, only to realize he was yet again helping megalomaniacal lunatics to cause enormous harm. He's the embodiment of the road to hell being paved with good intentions.
This explains why Luis doesn’t want to tell Leon about his employment with Umbrella, his employment with the Los Illuminados, and even the deal he made with Ada Wong. Thanks to Hunnigan, Leon found out Luis worked for Umbrella and Leon demanded Luis to tell him he worked for Los Illuminados moments before Luis gets killed. Who knows what would Leon would do to Luis if he finds out that Luis made a deal with Ada, whom Leon doesn’t know about Wesker’s Secret Organization in the Remake universe.
I really liked how they expanded on Krauser in the remake. You really get a sense of how broken he is from what happened to he and his men in Operation Javier and being discarded like he and his men were nothing to the US Government. Krauser clearly suffers from self-loathing as a result of his trauma. In the final leg of the fight he starts screaming at Leon to, "Finish your mission! You have your Orders!", "I didn't know a damn thing!" "The weak can protect nothing!" almost like he wants Leon to prove him wrong and kill him. It hits a lot harder as a vet that's seen some buddies not come back, either physically or psychologically from war and just get tossed aside by the nation they served because they can't adjust to what happened.
@@koulor315 it appears to have had BOWs because that's what slaughtered Krauser's men. The government refused to help, evac them and even seems to have actively tried to kill and cover up the survivors when they were on site.
@@BabyGirlTiny I mean they gave him more backstory than the Original did. They made his reasoning a bit more relatable than just "I want power." They took the aspects of Darkside Chronicles and the bare minimum dialogue from the OG RE4 about Krauser and fleshed that out. They made him Leon's mentor, kept Operation Javier, then expanded on why Krauser was so pissed off. In the Darkside Chronicles(DC from here out) he's medically discharged, but with benefits and not left out to dry, he basically just got obsessed with the power of BOWs and was jealous of Leon in the OG. The Remake expands his motivations with resentment over he and his men being lied to, abandoned and then having to swallow it all as the cover up suppressed the truth about what happened and how the Government screwed them over. They didn't let Krauser retire, but more or less forced him into a protection gig to keep him watched. Krauser was actively helpless to save his men or himself and couldn't even get justice afterwards despite dedicating his entire life to being a soldier for the US. He doesn't have a jealousy of Leon in the Remake, but rather a mix of both admiration for his skills and contempt for Leon still remaining faithful to the government in spite of being used and coerced just as much as Krauser was. In the remake, Krauser's motivations are much more in line with Vergil from the DMC franchise(which makes sense as Krauser and Leon were both original prototypes for Vergil and Dante) His past trauma at being powerless against BOWs and his impotent fury at being betrayed by the organization he'd dedicated his entire life to led him to seek both revenge and the means of never being helpless again. Krauser took the Plaga because it made him personally powerful so that no BOW could threaten him again and Las Plagas gave him the opportunity to take down the US for what they did to him to boot. Finally, Krauser still has some honor and humanity left in him, unlike his OG counterpart who was pretty much irredeemable in RE4 and dies a fairly undignified death as a result. In the Remake, he recognizes that he chose the wrong path and Leon was right, but he also is proud that his lessons on 'Doing what you have to do' actually get through to Leon. The Remake dropped the ball on some parts, but not with Krauser I think they did him very well.(I just wish his classic costume was an option in the game)
"I'll give you a holey body" is unironically one of my favorite lines in anything ever. Leon simultaneously uses Sadler's "holy body" line AND his staff against him in the same moment.
1:43:56 I LOVE THIS LINE SO FUCKING MUCH because it ties back to the opening of the game when Leon said "this time, it can be different ... it has to" and it's sad to think that not many people talking about this line specifically even though it's very important to leon's character and shows us that he doesn't want the miserable ending of racoon city to happen again and he will fight the pain to his last breath because he want this time to be ... DIFFERENT
It's one of my favorite moments. Leon is struggling so hard to avoid having to feel that sense of loss and tragedy and sadness again. It hits really hard and I actually choked up a bit when he said it. Powerful line, definitely doesn't get enough attention
RE4R surprisingly has some really good writing. I love storytelling in videogames anyway, so I eat this up. But that line was a great callback, and a powerful way to resolve his arc for this game. He had to kill Marvin and Krauser, he couldn't save any of his RPD teammates (like that cop Elliot who got torn apart right in front of him), or Kendo and his daughter. He lost Ada (he hasn't really lost her, but he lost who he THOUGHT she was, and she betrayed him). He couldn't save Racoon City. Leon is someone who went into service to protect and help, and seeing Raccoon wiped out must have hit him really hard. I feel like him saving Ashley, someone who has so much life to live, after all his struggling the whole game to protect her, made him feel it was all worth it (kind of like what Chris said about himself in RE5, that it was all worth fighting for after saving Jill and killing Wesker).
That's why not a lot of people say this, but Leon RE4 Remake really is an active protagonist, his goal is already set at the beginning and even before the story begins. Instead of the usual reactive protagonist where the inciting incident, the new goal, happens somewhere early in the story, Leon Already has his at the beginning.
@@blipflipped6680 I'm glad someone else can appreciate this. The writing in this game is phenomenal. The characters have actual depth, especially in regards to Leon and his trauma. He feels guilty for not being able to save more people during Raccoon City (and since Operation Javier was changed to be a suicide mission, he probably feels guilty for not being able to do more to save his comrades as well). He is so desperate to prevent more people from dying under his watch. One thing I noticed about this game is that Leon is significantly quieter during the island section, in both gameplay and cutscenes. He makes fewer comments, there are less sarcastic remarks. They're not nonexistent of course, but they're not as frequent either. It's very unlike him, and I believe the reason is because he's not in the best headspace. He knows he's running out of time to save Ashley. The chance that neither one of them will make it out is becoming a very real possibility. At this point the weight of everything is finally starting to get to him.
You hit the nail on the head with Krauser's show of betrayal. As a veteran, his laments of his service speaks volumes to the feeling we all have with our own experiences. Thank you for highlighting this
Reading and hearing about Mendez and Luis’s expanded and intertwined backstory was so amazing and heartbreaking, adding even more to this amazing game.
@@coltforceplayer "fortnite pose" lmao But its true, she doesnt insta die and doesnt have health bar wich means you dont need to invest healing items on her.
Ashley is just as bad as she was in the original, gameplay wise. So far as story, I guess you're right, but it doesn't mean much, because she still kinda sucks.
I literally cried when the merchant tells how years haven't been kind, I was a kid playing this back in 2005 and 18 years later being an adult felt like going back home. I need a code Veronica remake like this to give Clair the attention she needs now.
@@Umi_Pumi wow bro youre so cool, tell 'em! its not like media can have a profound effect or shape someones childhood and experiences they associate with different times in their life or anything
@@nick-zd3fk Im 33, and when I played the game I was 15. Sure it was a nice nod, but calm down. I loce these comments "oh when Leon was talking about Bingo I recall playing Bingo with my grandma who shortly died after a IRL DR Salvador murdered her"
@@Umi_Pumi Good for you, but not everyone is you. The way people perceive media is different for everyone, particularly depending on how impactful it was for them. There is literally no reason for you to be reductive to someone sharing their experience with a game on a video about the experience of that game lol It's literally just coming across as an asshole no matter your age.
1:44:31 Another detail that’s great is how Leon passes out the literal instant he confirms that Ashley is cured. It shows just how hard he was fighting to stay conscious to ensure her safety. If he succumbed THAT quickly after the surgery, then it must’ve been a hell of an urge he was resisting through sheer with willpower. I guess you could also interpret it as passing out from shock since this is like the first person he’s actually managed to successfully save in the whole game. After all the death in Raccoon City, the two cops, Luis, and Krauser… he finally got to save a person’s life. And that little smirk he gives before fainting confirms just how much it means to him to have accomplished this. Saving Ashley also saved Leon from losing all of his former self. As cynical as he is now, a tiny part of that bright-eyed rookie RC cop still lives on now that he’s seen that no matter how dark the world gets, there’s still a few good things he can do to make it better 😭❤️
Actually Ashley's part in the castle is one of my favorite moments in the whole game, especially exploring this area later as Leon. It's literally all we have left from RE 3.5
Another detail you can learn about in Luis' lab is the reason he kept asking everyone for a cigarette, and yet strangely had one in his death scene. It was his code phrase for meeting with Ada! "I do, and its the brand you like" was the answer he was waiting for to know he was talking to the right person!
At this point, Code Veronica is too important to be ignored as it established Wesker as the big bad and Umbrella’s history, unless Ada’s story change might implement itself as the next RE5.
@@ScooterDogeThat’d be a really cool side game or even surprise next game, though it’s suck to have to wait even longer for Jill valentine to show up again
1:29:30 that scene is so well written. Ashley limp wristing due to her struggling to keep control causing her to stovepipe the firearm is insane attention to detail
Suzi has to be the biggest RE nerd if she somehow memorized all the village names and every backstory for every character, item, and environments that are hidden. I take it back that's really impressive
I legitimately think it is really cool how while the main plot is seen by us, the players, the history behind the cult and the village can be unlocked just by exploring. And I agree with you that it gave me huge Dark Souls vibes.
I loved the luis' lab section I loved the fact that the virus shows the weakest moment of leon. The virus shows leon's guilt of killing the people he swore to protect because a madman decided to infect and his near decade torment from his self induced guilt trying to tire him out and submit to the virus, and when he finally enters he spoke the line "this time it has to be different" in a tired voice impliying that poor leon had to cling into that idea just to give him enough strength just to cure ashley and when he did he just passed out. Man re4 remake is a beautiful game and its sad to see that a certain youtuber made a video that deems the remake "souless"
The line that hit me the hardest was from one of Luis's logs, paraphrasing "I hope I can sweet talk my way out of this one. For the world's sake." Like goddamn, he was really trying. It must've been lonely and terrifying, feeling like he was on his own side for so long.
The way you mentioned not wanting to kill Mendez after learning his story makes me think it'd be a cool detail in future games if the playable characters' dialogue and interactions could change depending on what and how many files they've read. It is kinda weird how your character can read about what's going on, but it doesn't change their outlook on the situation at all.
Um, Leon NOT wanting to kill 20-ft-tall-human-centipede who attempted to murder him multiple times by that point? You people read into lore/fantasize motivations wayyy too far sometimes.
@meowmasterL346 I never said Leon shouldn't want to kill Mendez. That wouldn't even work gameplay wise. All I said was it'd be cool if the dialogue changed to reflect the effort the player went through to read the lore.
I know I have already commented a bunch but your video is just so good! Ada's line in response to Leon asking if she's just using him again. The "What do you think?" It the coldest, more cruel line in the entire game in my opinion. I had to replay the scene a dozen times when I first heard it. I couldn't believe it. Capcom clearly was trying to step away from shipping them in this game (as opposed to Leon in RE6.. oh boy). It really does feel like that's where Leon decides this woman is just not worth anymore heartache anymore. While he isn't opposed to her help... he certainly isn't ever going to trust her again.
@@blueflare3848 Fun fact: during the recording sessions they had to cut some screams cuz they were even more intense than the ones you can hear in the game. I know this cuz Gen talked about it on streams with Nick (Leon's va and mocap).
Watching you recap the story of the villagers who were exploited by Los Illuminados made me appreciate the photo collection at the end of the game that depicts the progression of that same story.
my favorite has to be luis, I actually felt a bit emotional when he died. Also after you beat Krauser's 2nd form, his last word to Leon is not Rookie, but Leon, it's like Krauser acknowledging Leon as a capable warrior. One last thing I love is when Leon replied to salazar, "Yeah fat chance Ramon, the girl stays with me.", I love ashley does a tiny little smirk, it's cute
Capcom has had the most astounding redemption arc in gaming. Went from RE 6 and DmC to RE 7, 8, RE2R, RE4R, and DMC 5. Nothing but good news these days, lads.
Note: Our fave pirate prolly keeps a blue flame in his desk to maintain a parasite of his own in check. Also, Leon is able to move around with Ash probably because Luis suppressed the parasite unlike Ashley's, which had much more gestation time. Also, unlike other bosses Krauser never gave up his humanity completely, not turning himself into a BiO completely, and recognizing Leon by finally calling him by name, not as "rookie"
Wooow I never noticed the connection with the fire! It makes sense that the fire with shorter wavelengths (blue and purple) would be damaging and the long wavelength (red) be okay. Really great shout, Suzi!
Kudos for catching the Ashley gun jam due to a limp wrist -- not many realize this common real-world problem. One thing you missed is the code word/phrase Luis and Ada used to identify each other, "Do you have any smokes?" Leon responded "That stuff will kill ya" which made Luis realize it wasn't him; but when Ada said, "Yes, the kind you like" and then went right into asking him for the amber -- I thought they put a lot of effort into this and it's very cool. Love the video and the 1 hour 50 plus minutes really flew by.
Not only is Luis a much better character now, the way he dies also makes so much more sense now with Krauser ambushing them. In the OG Leon first enters the room. Then Luis enters the room through the same door Leon just came through. And then Saddler enters the room either by opening the door without Luis or Leon noticing it or he was waiting under the ceiling like Spider-Man. Also Ashley is the SAME ROOM staying totally quiet throughout all of this.
One thing to note about the chief killing the grandfather of luis, is that the grandfather actually told him to do it in one of the notes, I think it was something like "you know what to do"
Now that you mention it, That's exactly how Mendez dies. Maybe in the back of his mind, Mendez wants Leon to kill him just like he killed Mr. Navarro all those years ago. And Mendez died the exact same way being burned to death.
In terms of story I don't find one version of this game to be better than the other. I absolutely love them both. This one definitely hits you in the feels more so than the original and having a more grounded take is absolutely the right call for this remake. But I still absolutely love the Evil Dead-esque campiness of the original. And I love the constant bickering between Leon and the villains in the original. I think this is exactly how a remake of a perfect game should be done. Instead of trying to replace the legendaryness of the original, it coexists with it and just adds to the legend.
I will say, as a vet - Krauser was written very well in that regard. I remember being in a REALLY bad place mentally that felt so similar to that. Like being used up and tossed aside like trash.
I really like the remake version of Leon’s character development and 4 just basically confronted the PTSD and unhealthy relationship with Ada. Leon has grown in this version that the version of him in the films and RE6 don’t exist.
Krauser yelling I CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU WRITHE, was the best vocal performance in the game. Its the RE4 equivalent of MAY CHAOS TAKE THE WORLD from Elden Ring
So here's the thing about Krauser's knife. At the beginning of my first playthrough, I wasn't a big fan of Leon's starting knife. Partly because I struggled with parrying and partly because I missed the original design. But as I dumped more money into it, the more I started to appreciate it until I eventually mastered it. So when I finally get to Krauser's mutated bossfight, I relied on the knife heavily. In fact, it broke right when I used it to land the killing blow. When I acquired Krauser's blade and surpassed Leon's teacher, I decided to claim it as my own. Instead of selling or repairing Leon's old knife, I just put in the storage to try and let it go. It symbolized how Leon was able to let go of some of his trauma from Raccoon City and was an amazing blend of gameplay and thematic storytelling that was completely unintentional on Capcom's part.
I genuinely got goosebumps when the bonus round music hit. I love the original but wow, few things hit me that hard. It was like all my RE4 childhood memories came flooding back as soon as the music hit.
I love this version of Ashley and Luis. Seeing Ashley get more assured of herself as the game progress is wonderful. She is resourceful and a quick thinker. Luis with his desire to be a better person and to make amends is just great. His voice actor's thoughtful and articulate explanation of his character's motivation was so heartwarming. Leon is and will always be my favorite RE character and this version just adds to his appeal.
This is very impressive and clearly shows the amount of love you have for this game. You had me almost tearing up about the Big Cheese backstory for heavens sake. Don't stop doing what you do, please.
Loved this video. I already played it 3 times, but Suzi provided great context and information that I either missed or didn’t pick up on. I love the idea Mendez decided not to kill Luis Sera because a part of his humanity remembered him as a young boy. So cool!
One of my favorite parts of this remake was that they really make it feel like the parasites are a hive mind and that they (through Saddler) can communicate will all the Ganados (and Leon/Ashley) telepathically. And when you think it's the parasite doing this, it's even more creepy. In short they managed to make the concept of the parasite itself actually creepy and unsettling compared to the original where the parasite is just... there. I never really liked original RE4's story and a lot of it was really stupid. I like this remake because it improved it in every way and made it believable.
Not quite so believable. Saddler takes control of Ashley's mind twice, but never Leon's. Why not? Why can he completely halt Leon's movements, but not control his mind... ever? And if he tried so hard to get Ashley to shoot Leon, why didn't he just snuff him when she failed?
I honestly don't even play these games, but the voice narration and journalism on display is captivating. Appreciate your passion Ms. Sphere Hunter, I really hope you find that sphere.
I'm so sorry you had to deal with (in Leon's voice) "the pain" of people wrongfully blaming, attacking & harassing you over the negative Ada voice actress reception... Even though you said multiple times to not harass her & it was your own personal opinion in your own review... You shouldn't have been blamed for the actions of others (most of which probably aren't even in your/this community)... People were needlessly cruel to you & Lily Gao... Thank you for the great "soulful" content ❤
I was rooting for her, up until she chose to blame "white priviledge" for all the negative reception and not about her performance. It genuinely feels like someone sucked out her soul (the VA, not just the character.) Still, It sucks to have people take it too far.
As bad as the voice acting was, the director and every other person that touched the ada character bares just as much blame. In a project where everything else was high quality you're left wondering how this happened. Id be legit curious for a behind the scenes.
Luis really made the latter half of this game for me! I always felt that the final acts were the weakest, but his addition added an extra layer of joy for me that I didn't realize how much I was appreciating until his death. Rip Don Quixote, our beloved knight errant!
I have not finished the video yet, but I had to pause to thank you for sharing Mendez's story. Is my favorite little nugget hidden in RE4RE that a lot of people did not pay attention to or caught up on. Older people in rural areas lacking education is common where I'm from and I've seen it a lot in my life, so it resonated a lot with me, and the fact that Luis is the child that run off is a little extra that grounds him even more with this place. Love your headcannon too.
With the release of Seperate Ways it is absolutely incredible that while Our Brave Knight Don Quixote is fighting back the forces of darkness in the cabin he's missing a nearby fight with a genuine giant that is *hidden behind a windmill.* I don't know if that's intentional but as someone reading the book right now (due to RE4) dear god is it perfect
Knowing the story of Don Quixote re-contextualizes and enriches Luis’s character so much, and makes him that much more compelling and his death that much more heart breaking. The writing staff really did an amazing job making this story and its characters feel so much more real and made them feel like actual characters rather than Caricatures. I like that Suzie mentioned the build up to the reveal of Saddler because I also thought it was done super effectively and was way more intimidating to see him controlling the characters throughout the story and eventually controlling Ashley to attempt to kill Leon when they first meet, rather than his wholy less meaningful murder of Luis in the original, which the Act Man said made the character feel more imposing, but I have to disagree. P.S THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THE RIDICULOUSNESS OF PEOPLE WANTING THAT GOOFY ASS VIBE OF THR OG STORY. It was so IMMERSION breaking I don’t understand why anyone likes that.
The improved narrative also gets me extremely excited for Separate Ways, as I was never interested in playing it before because I really could care less about the story in the OG RE4. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with it.
The REmakes are doing such a good job of taking one note characters, and rather than rewriting that one note, they add a whole bunch of harmonically resonant notes to support and give depth to the established note.
For real, one of the BEST things about this game is how "GAMEY" it is... It's such a perfect balance of awesome moments, fun mechanics and action packed gameplay. Happy to buy this game for the 5th time
“You better hustle, who knows what’s become of the girl!” I don’t know why but that line is my favorite line of the game. The way he delivers it and the pressure it puts on Leon to be as expedient as possible with his battle against Krauser is something menacing. They did a great job with his VA. This is definitely the best REmake next to the originals in 2002.
My personal theory is that Ashley wanted to be a contractor instead of following in to her father's footsteps in politics. So she got herself heavy machinery certifications. And yes This also means that in my headcannon she's forklift certified.
Whoa the whole relationship between the plaga and differing light sources is sooooo cool and the color differences is subtle but powerful knowledge to have. I love how deeply you dive into the games you're into, Suzi.
Omg!!!! I was so looking forward to your inputs. This game was such a huge part of my youth. Love how they wrote all of the characters. Ashley, Luis, even the villains like Krauser!
47:45 i beat this game 13 times and i never thought to try to bring Ashley there after the fight. Its crazy that after beating this game so many times there are still things I haven’t seen
Great video Suzi. Awesome documentary. I definitely felt more connected with Leon and especially Ashley and Luis this time around. The VA's and mocap actors as we know were brilliant and I loved that you included a scene from Nicks stream. In the words of Katie o Hagan, RE for life
Can I just say, I love Krauser's VA and direction in this game! It harkens back to old 80s action movies with villains like Bennet from Commando or Mr. Joshua from Lethal Weapon being these sadistic human monsters that are like modern day berserkers. It especially gives me Gary Busey vibes through and through. EDIT: Also, while RE loves putting in Easter Eggs in the lore files... I find it interesting that Baker was the name of one of Krauser's men involved in Ashley's kidnapping. I'm of the headcanon that that was Jack Baker, which would explain how he was able to afford the renovations, let alone the property taxes, for the Baker estate. Like, don't get me wrong, I get Baker is a common name and it's likely just an easter egg, and that the Baker house was a generational home - but damn, if it wouldn't clear up a lot of little issues itching the back of my mind after playing RE7. EDIT 2: Also, someone on RUclips owes me like $50... I called Luis's backstory being expanded to include that he'd been one of the main researchers that worked on the Nemesis project, to give his character a little more relevance to the grand narrative of RE and weight to his personal journey in 4. I said, "It's gonna be that Luis would have been an Umbrella researcher, which would explain how he's been found by Ada and Wesker while also making that one note in RE3 about combining parasites and viruses to create ultra powerful, but manageable BOWs seem relevant..."
1:18 Love that "soulful/soulless" has already become a meme now. Meme magic baby! Puh, Suzi dropped an almost 2 hour feature length review. It's way past midnight where I live... No sleep 'till I watch that bad boy. 🙃 Coffee time! ☕
You're a MASTER at your trade, Suz. I finished it 3 times already and found not even half of the details you expertly dissect here. I'm thoroughly impressed and thankful to both you and Capcom. Also props to you for having Nick record a faux barfing sound just for that roller coaster bit.
Part which low key blew my mind (assuming i didn't misread it/not thinking too much into it) but the emails in the lab between Ada and Luis, the fact that it gave Luis's first question when Leon finds him, "you got a smoke" a meaning as it was the code phrase he was to use upon meeting Ada.
The best changes of the remake is Ashley and Luis' character. The more serious and less bratty Ashley and her cute dialogs. And the fact that Luis gets to tag along with you and kick ass for a bit, his added contribution really was better than how abruptly insignificant he was in the original.
One this that is interesting about Ada’s personality in this game that nobody is noticing is that she seems to still be putting on an act with Leon. Every time Leon says anything humorous or personal she seems to go into flight mode every time like she’s about to break character and has to hurry and leave
Really excited to dive into this video as I love the expanded lore/story surrounding RE4 Remake & what better way to explore that by watching this 2 hour masterclass retrospective! ❤ Edit: Just gone done watching the vid & holy moly, did this make me love the story even more. Props to you Suzi for pointing out and analyze some of the things we may have missed or never thought + getting Andre Peña to share his thoughts on Luis’s characterization, which was super duper cool!
I thought the release of Zelda TotK was the only thing I’d look forward to today, but a 2-hour RE4R story analysis from Suzi Hunter definitely comes close.👌🏽
The segment of The Mendez Tragedy was so beautifully put and you mentioned so much stuff I never noticed thanks for your hard work on this video and all videos
Loved this! So great to watch a deep dive like this by someone with such knowledge and appreciation for this series. You totally deepened my appreciation for this game (which I already loved before this!). The RE community is lucky to have you!
The two things I do wish got added was: 1. a bit more emotional reaction from Leon when he first meets Ada. With the flash in the intro it made it seem like he was affected by her "death." 2. I wish Leon reflected a bit more on his trauma. He could talk to Ashley about it as a way of getting her to trust him and help show her that Leon understands what she's going through. And with Luis, that couldve further cemented their bond, as that tension couldve been more directly addressed, with Luis knowing Leon had such a personal stake in what Umbrella did.
That's fair. I was personally hoping that Leon would be more shaken up when he found out that Ada was alive. I was also hoping to see Leon talk about Raccoon City with Ashley at some point during their travels.
Suzy, você é incrível!!! Esse vídeo tão bem editado e tão bem escrito.... Talento que vem de uma verdadeira fã da saga! Obrigado por esse conteúdo ❤ kisses from Brazil.
Loved this!! And feeling super grateful for analysis videos like this that let *me*, an anxiety-riddled terminal wuss with zero tolerance for jump scares, engage this closely with excellent horror media -- especially a franchise this iconic and fascinating. I may never be able to play any Resident Evil firsthand without breaking a controller in fear (lmao I have done this), but I still get to experience a little of what makes them so cool through creators like you. Thank you, Suzi!!
I’m only halfway through but your passion for this franchise is infectious in your work. Meeting and talking with you is one of the best parts about returning to this franchise and you should know that I’m a huge fan now. 🤘😎🤘
When Suzi’s first RE4R video came out I’d never played an RE game before. Now I’m finishing up my first professional playthrough of RE4R after playing through the first 3 REmakes. It’s been a crazy month but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Thanks Suzi!
I think there was a line in one of the notes from the original game that implied the Plaga were harmed by UV light specifically, as well as other EM waves above that threshold, such as X-Rays and Gamma Rays. So, it might be that the blue and purple lanterns and torches produce some kind of UV light, kind of like a blacklight. Which means, if these guys did end up infecting the world at large, they'd be done in by ravers, crime scene investigators, and nosy hotel managers.
I know this video is MASSIVE so I added video chapters.

Thanks for that, Suzi but one question. Who you calling Sancho!
hi
While I appreciate the time stamps, I won’t need it because I’m going to watch the entire thing. Multiple times!
Another great video as always! Greetings from Mexico.
On repeat playthroughs this little detail always makes me smile
got a gum
Yo thats a cool detail!
Then when Ada goes "I do, the kind you like" that makes much more sense.
Thanks for pointing that out
Thank you, I'm so glad someone else noticed this.
It also recontextualizes his question in the OG game too. Makes me wonder if they always planned it to be code talk rather than him just being funny.
Already knew that 😆 but yeah it’s definitely cool
Damn I read the file but I never noticed that! Thanks for pointing it out, that's awesome
The way Luis' VA talked about the character made me legitimately tear up. His understanding of Luis and his interpretation of his psyche, and the way he delivered it was so moving.
Same. The VA delivered an outstanding performance that I literally had to choke back a tear when he died.
i need him to read Don Quixote as an audiobook for real his voice is gold.
Thank you so much. It really has been a blessing and an honor. I appreciate all the love, and thank you Suzi for thinking of me when you were making this amazing video.❤🙏👏🙌
P.S.: I will consider the audiobook😉🫶
@@AreYouAptTV you made me love Luis as a character.
@@AreYouAptTV Great job dude, you really fleshed the character out and made him feel so human!!
The idea that Luis actually wanted to leave with Leon and Ashley just hurts even more now damn
No stop…my heart
@@thevillainousqueenofhearts4976imagine if they were a trio in a game it would’ve been perfect, Luis the brains, Leon the bronze, and Ashley to be Ashley
@@jordendavid8992 I would have loved this game so much for that!
The idea of Krauser carrying a yandere photo of Leon at all times just makes me giggle. Like Saddler yells at Krauser for being a weird knife pervert, and Krauser just pouts in a tent holding that photo. “He doesn’t understand. Only YOU understand, rookie.”
Leon saying “This time it has to be different” at the beginning then right as he reaches Luis’s lab really sums up his amazing, tragic character.
Luis' VA section was simply amazing, the way he articulates his understanding of the character is almost poetic
Gracias, amigo!❤🙏
“Not looking good eh, my friend? And such a loss to the ladies of the world.” Is easily my favorite line in the whole game. Even as he’s dying he’s a charmer.
@@AreYouAptTV YOOOO

Fun fact, Don Quijote is a mandatory reading in almost every high school in Spain, so reading and watching so many references to it in the game made me so happy and nostalgic as a Spaniard.
It's mandatory in south america too, in Argentina almost everyone reads it in school
El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la mancha
There's a file about a hunter of the villa with a grandson who is described as a big Quijote nerd. No names but it is obvious it's Luis
In Brazil too, at least in my school we did haha

Love how casually Suzi returned after a month with a 2 hour video, cant believe she was Ashley all along
Everywhere
Somehow, I always knew she was.
What a TWEEST
Oh yeah she didn't just wanna get out "whatever" ASAP. Took her time, excellent job 😁
Worked on the character development in between videos
The scared look on Luis’s face as he died just absolutely shattered my heart.
@@ericastein3926 absolutely. This 1,000%.
there's a mario and luigi mod gameplay video that absolutely helped me get over this
@@highfyrebright haha that’s amazing
“people can change, right?” 😢
to me it was a sort of guilty, regretful expression. like genuine remorse for what he had done, but mixed with the hope that he had done something better, and the knowledge that he wasn’t going to be able to find out whether his effort paid off. that’s what these recent remakes have done to a lot of the characters, and what i love about them: characters who were originally one note still hit that note but with a full resonant harmony of supporting notes that affirm the original rather than rewrite it.
The game took me 18 years back, simpler times with no social media, just a GameCube, pizza and a bunch of kids scared stiff of Verdugo.
I finished RE4R and started a Pro run right away. Now I've done 5 runs. This game is the definition of fun.
Just cuz everyone else uses sm doesn't mean you have to as wellll
That's what I was thinking as well 😢. They both are foils to Leon in their own way.
In the end, Leon decided to prevail through Luis' path and redeemed himself by being able to save someone, something he felt he couldn't do previously in RE2
@@Dukesparrow1999 saved two people though.
yes, fascinating way to look at these two men..
Hearing Suzi say, 'wandering into the woods alone, after taking a piss' gave me a good idea of just how much detail she'd get into in this video 😂
'That was so bad' 😂 What a thing to say at the end of what I thought was the best video you've made to date.
Mui bien Suzi. Also the Baby Eagle look suits you 😁
She pees standing up
It's so refreshing hearing a woman say how awesome Ashley is in the remake after seeing so many female games journalists write about how disappointing she is, or how she missed the mark and wasn't a strong female character. To the point it made me wonder if we even played the same game. But I love to hear someone not only sing her praises, but actually explain in detail *why* she's a much better character this time around.
She was actually useful in the remake
i agree with you so much omg. all the men criticizing her as a character are just mad she's her own person with her own past, motives, and mission instead of leon's lapdog
what a weird thing to say
@@steyaanderly8823lol no it isn't dumbass but go off on why you can't handle people criticizing a fictional character
She's a femboy 💀
You know, now that you mentioned it, they could perfectly choose the remake of Code Veronica to also use as an opportunity to show the Umbrella's downfall.
If they got rid of some really bad gameplay elements of the original, like the moth hallway, CV could be redeemed
_Editors' note: Claire was a waifu for a long time, but upon growing up and then playing CV, it was thoroughly disappointing_
@@shredjward They will probably do Re5R first.
That would really only be shown at the end with a time jump
Code Veronica IIRC takes place somewhere in 1999, and Umbrella doesn't fully collapse until somewhere in the range of 2001-2003
Yes, and give RE engine Chris more backstory
I find it interesting that while Krauser is always calling Leon "Rookie", Leon calls Krauser by his name, UNTIL Leon beats Krauser, Krauser drops the "Rookie" and calls Leon by name while Leon calls him "Major". Yes, Leon called him "Major Krauser" when he was first introduced after throwing his knife at Luis, but ever since then, it looks like he doesn't see his Major there anymore until the twisted Krauser was defeated. Neat touch imo
"Respect the rank, not the man... My ass."
- Leon, probably
He's the embodiment of the road to hell being paved with good intentions.
. . .......... ......... ......... ........ .....
I also noticed that this remake version of operation Javier might not had zombies involved at all
@@koulor315 it appears to have had BOWs because that's what slaughtered Krauser's men. The government refused to help, evac them and even seems to have actively tried to kill and cover up the survivors when they were on site.
They don’t expand on Krauser at all. They give him a generic backstory that doesn’t really reflect anything he does or says
@@grandadmiralzaarin4962BOWS were always in the original.
The merchant not being able to be attacked due to the color of fire is such a small detail wow suzi. Props to you
Pretty sure the game tells us this but its a cool detail.

"I'll give you a holey body" is unironically one of my favorite lines in anything ever. Leon simultaneously uses Sadler's "holy body" line AND his staff against him in the same moment.
yes, it was hilarious.
Ohhhh I didn't even think of it like that 😂
Clever
1:43:56
I LOVE THIS LINE SO FUCKING MUCH
because it ties back to the opening of the game when Leon said
"this time, it can be different ... it has to"
and it's sad to think that not many people talking about this line specifically even though it's very important to leon's character and shows us that he doesn't want the miserable ending of racoon city to happen again and he will fight the pain to his last breath because he want this time to be ... DIFFERENT
Same here. I love this line, and I love the exhausted desperation in his voice as he says it.
I wonder how they could have shown this backstory in the game better without ruining the pacing of the game.

I'm sure the villagers had plenty of smokes on them. Or maybe not considered it's an isolated area. But maybe there are deliveries? Idk
Maybe he just wanted a cigarette
At this point, Code Veronica is too important to be ignored as it established Wesker as the big bad and Umbrella’s history, unless Ada’s story change might implement itself as the next RE5.
They could easily make an Ada game that starts after her fall in RE2, and ends when she goes to Spain.
@@ScooterDogeThat’d be a really cool side game or even surprise next game, though it’s suck to have to wait even longer for Jill valentine to show up again
This game gives me so much hope for the franchise. Ashley was amazing both in terms of gameplay and story.
1:29:30 that scene is so well written. Ashley limp wristing due to her struggling to keep control causing her to stovepipe the firearm is insane attention to detail
1:12:25 Luis didn't have it when he first met Ada. He went back and got it from the lab when he was picking up the suppressant for Leon and Ashley.
Yeah I figured as much
But the lab was in the island right?
Suzi has to be the biggest RE nerd if she somehow memorized all the village names and every backstory for every character, item, and environments that are hidden. I take it back that's really impressive
Yeah she memorized it and made this video in a single night off the top of her head without a script whatsoever
@@sludgerat444 I know it's crazy!
He didn't memorize anything, he just did some research and then wrote down a script for the video
No matter if you’re exploring the game the first time or even speed running the game. You ALWAYS save and thank the good doggo.
I absolutely loved how goofy the cart ride with Luis was, also the expanded Krauser boss fight was absolutely amazing
I legitimately think it is really cool how while the main plot is seen by us, the players, the history behind the cult and the village can be unlocked just by exploring. And I agree with you that it gave me huge Dark Souls vibes.
2 hours of Suzi just talking about RE4R, is what I needed all day today.
Bit too short for my taste 😂
So true! Also her Ashley cosplay is great.
Is she trans?
I loved the luis' lab section
I loved the fact that the virus shows the weakest moment of leon.
Which RUclipsr said that? What an idiot
What virus? You mean the plaga parasite?
The line that hit me the hardest was from one of Luis's logs, paraphrasing "I hope I can sweet talk my way out of this one. For the world's sake." Like goddamn, he was really trying. It must've been lonely and terrifying, feeling like he was on his own side for so long.
The way you mentioned not wanting to kill Mendez after learning his story makes me think it'd be a cool detail in future games if the playable characters' dialogue and interactions could change depending on what and how many files they've read.
It is kinda weird how your character can read about what's going on, but it doesn't change their outlook on the situation at all.
That could be pretty groundbreaking if done really well.
The only game I know who did this was Until dawn, and I love it-
I mean, at the end of the day Leon has to get Ashley home. Even if Leon did sympathize with Mendez, he is still an obstacle to Leon's mission
Elaborate?
57:24
She did an amazing job voicing Ashley. Some of her screams are almost hard to listen to with how real they feel. Incredible work.
I agree. Her screams are absolutely harrowing.

Bitorrez Mendez, a true tragic villain. Loved the section about the village chief and the backstory of how he fell to serve saddler. Well done Suzi!
@@mohdadeeb1829 Makes me wish we could see moments of lucidity from some of the enemies, except Salazar... Pretty sure he was always like that.
Thank you!
Why does no one get this!?
I will say, as a vet - Krauser was written very well in that regard. I remember being in a REALLY bad place mentally that felt so similar to that. Like being used up and tossed aside like trash.
Hey. Is everything alright?
Hey! It is you, Creator of Mega Man Unlimited.

@@MrRAGE-md5rj Twitter? That place rots people's minds
With the release of Seperate Ways it is absolutely incredible that while Our Brave Knight Don Quixote is fighting back the forces of darkness in the cabin he's missing a nearby fight with a genuine giant that is *hidden behind a windmill.*
I don't know if that's intentional but as someone reading the book right now (due to RE4) dear god is it perfect
I was so confused about Ada's voice. I loved the actress's voice in Remake2
And yes
This also means that in my headcannon she's forklift certified.
Yo that's badass

I can't believe some people say this game is soul less
You can't replicate what the original did, it is not soulless it doesn't have that "spark" the original had

Been waiting for this video. You're one of the few that actually notices all these details and watching you go through them is amazing. Great job.
The two things I do wish got added was: 1. a bit more emotional reaction from Leon when he first meets Ada. With the flash in the intro it made it seem like he was affected by her "death."
Suzi, your passion makes me happy. I love the crap out of this game. The lip quiver moment after Krauser was the biggest hit for me

The color of fire section was a very astute observation that I've never thought about before, but it does make a lot of sense...
