Your comments on losing things vs losing your health really hit home for me. About 3 months ago I rode a ladder 20ft to the ground and literally broke my body. After 3 surgeries of bone and soft tissue repair and a total hip replacement, I know I may never be able to do the work I used to in telecom/low voltage/integration again. I've lost thousands of dollars worth of tools due theft and accidents, and compared to this all of that is meaningless. You can replace a tool and carry on with the work, but some injuries cannot be recovered from fully. Cherish what you have while you have it, especially your health. One bright spot in all of this is the increased volume of videos you've been putting out really helped keep me occupied during times where all I could do is lay in a bed and recover. For that, I'm grateful to the Tested team.
Hearing your story about having to go into like the middle of nowhere to practice snapping the whipped was a little surprising. Not every day that a few minutes of RUclips video can fundamentally alter your worldview, but here we are. Mr. Savage, you are an amazing person, and thank you for sharing that with me.
What a beautiful and succinct way of coping with the loss of temporary objects. While it is never great to lose or to have stolen from, you do really have to weigh up reality in that sense, but, in the sense of it, fortunately a lot of people haven't lost someone close to them to achieve the perspective required to weigh the outcomes. Thank you, Adam, for sharing not only your experience, but your views on reality as a whole
Not long before your LandCruiser was stolen for its joyride, a friend and I were walking through the Mission on our way to find tacos for lunch. I heard the unmistakeable sound of a Diesel engine stop at an intersection and glanced up to see YOU driving it. Was lucky enough to snap a pic of your totally rad vehicle and was so glad to hear you got it back. Perhaps the whip will make its way back to you again. Thanks for sharing the update.
Can I just say that every time I watch one of your vids, I find your attitude to the universe, and how it turns, very ‘wholesome’. Congratulation, you are a proper human bean, and welcome to the club.
Adam, you and your team are an inspiration to us all! Thank you so much for sharing so much of your life with us! I love to build things and make Halloween props and dream of making so much more. Big German Guy......British wrestler, stuntman and actor Pat Roach ...a Gentleman, a man mountain, and an all round beautiful person he also played the massive sherpa that Indy fought in the bar in Nepal acting credits include, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Clash of the Titans, Never Say Never Again, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Conan the Destroyer, Red Sonja, Willow, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, plus many more....... RIP Pat.
Adam, you've been a part of my life since the first MythBusters aired when I was 16 years old. I learned so much and I was inspired by many things I watched on MythBusters, and now also on Tested. I find myself being reminded of something that I already knew, but had forgotten... the material things of this life are not important compared to the people we cherish, the time we have with them, and the memories we ourselves leave behind. I feel like I've lost sight of that lately and was not expecting to be reminded of it on an episode of Tested. Thank you for being an honest person, an inspiring maker, and a fan of your fans.
I can think of no place where that's more true than cracking a whip in Mission Dolores Park. Like, it'd be weird if a kinkster *didn't* show up to inquire about it!
It's a conversation starter for sure. I have a David Morgan 8' that I bought in the late '90s. And got delivered to work. It was fun opening that in the office. "What do you use that for?", Well, this one's a big big for the bedroom, but it's a lot of fun outdoors.. Or just conversations outdoors when I'm practicing, which are often about safety because they aren't toys, and I have the scars to prove it. But that was also one of the best bits of advice I got from Mr Morgan, ie to practice wearing heavy clothing/leather to avoid accidental cuts.
From the first episode of Mythbusters, I have always been impressed with Adam's character. His humor, his positive attitude, his enthusiasm for everything that stirs his curiosity and creativity; he is a person that can only add to life. Ok maybe him making people aware of things to spend money on to buy or make and somethings to buy and make takes away money from life but the things we make, experience, and enjoy is what life is about so I am going to call that a winning exchange that my financial adviser disagrees with. You had me as a fan at "Am I missing an eyebrow?"
Adam Savage I want to thank you for your longstanding influence you've had on my life. your a true inspiration to get out and do what you love. I wish you many happy years filled with many one day builds. God bless.
Another great thing about the plane scene is, that the first mechanic, who gets knocked out by Indy quite quickly, wakes up when the petrol wave hits him and runs away. That's a few seconds that were not strictly necessary, but it was a human moment. And kept the killcount a bit lower. Many movies forget about extras who are "defeated". (Although one could argue that the pilot meets this exact fate. Being knocked out, lying there, burning horribly in a cockpit.)
You have taught me many things over the years, but from the story of your whip I have gained the greatest gift of all; and for that I thank you. Sometimes in life you have, or need a song or a book, or stranger who says the right thing at the right time, in this case a story of a lost whip was that thing that brought perspective. So here’s to lost friends and never taking for granted what we have!
Hearing Adam talk about how he thinks of the person who robbed him and how you can tell if honestly holds no resentment shows how kind and caring he really is.
The plane fight scene is huge. Also just can't help but appreciate the alley showdown ending with the exploding truck and Harrison Ford coming into in frame and then the reaction: 'Marion...'
Loved this video and the comments. My little grandson watched the Indiana movies on vacation; now he's everything indiana. So funny to see him climb the slide, shimmy the swing chain, launch to the rings where he spins dangerously kicking and fighting until he jumps off onto the glider (which I assume is the airplane, but one doesn't know with children) from there, he climbs the little clubhouse . I really hold my breath as he clings to the bars behind him and looks for a safe place to jump. If he gets away, it's not for long, because he's pursued to the trampoline. That's where the real action is: kicking, punching, flipping, pole climbing and ledge walking-Only to do it all again! You can probably tell I'm a big fan of this little Indiana .
Grant seemed like a wonderful guy and I'm glad all of us had the opportunity to see him work. I kick myself for not taking the opportunity to meet him. I have less than zero interest in autographs, but he was at con and I seriously contemplated paying just to say hi and thank you.
@8:00 While in San Diego I cracked a bull whip in the college dorm halls. And yes it was SO loud it got the entire floor's student body out in the hall for the second crack of the whip... I disappeared into the dorm room before security arrived.
Pat Roach (English actor born in Birmingham) is the Big German Mechanic who fights Indiana Jones in The Raiders of the Lost Ark, He wasn't just the German Mechanic he also fought Indiana Jones in the Nepal Bar scene he was the Big Sherpa and he also fought Indie in the The Temple of Doom (Guard killed by Rock Crusher) & in The Last Crusade (Gestapo Guard).
Being aware of the platitude that this phrase comes with, you should know that I am as well and so I do not say this lightly: This man is a treasure. I cherish videos like this so much because hearing this wisdom is inspiring for me to be a better person. Thank you, Adam Savage, sincerely.
Maaaaan! I got choked up just by the description of your feelings the loss of mere objects. Then you went and mentioned Grant and your dog and your other friends... You're a beautiful human being Adam. Thank you
The man punching him in the arm.....Paul ‘Crocodile Dundee’ Hogan!!! His Aussie accent is clearly hear when he says “Scheiße” before climbing out of the rear of the truck.
You mentioned Indy going down with the first punch and picking himself back up. I thought about Cool Hand Luke fighting Dragline. Loved that movie. Also I was reminded of my mother who wired B25 bombers, she witnessed a propeller hitting a man in the head and the aftermath, pretty gruesome.
I have no tools (except the usual household hammer, etc.) so I watch you more to listen and enjoy you. This was a prime example of learning something about life from you once again. Thanks!
The first Indiana Jones film was a classic action film. All students of the art of FX can learn so much from this classic. A milestone just like Jason and the Argonauts was for a previous generation.
That Indy scene has been at Disney World as a stunt show for ages. I remember seeing it about 30 years ago, and when we went back recently, that show was still going, and still fun.
It got way deeper than I thought but last sentences were truly beautiful. I totally agree with your view. Thanks Adam, I am very sorry for your recent losses.
Adam I really appreciate how open and real you are as a host. So refreshing in such a superficial entertainment arena. Your a great bloke mate. (From Australia). Oh PS some of Mandalorian was made in Australia!
I know just what you mean about loss. When you have something, you have the ability to always go back to that thing and make new memories with it. But when its gone, there are no more new memories to be made with it. Its all in how you cope with that loss. for me, when i loose something dear to me, i look back on the time i had with that thing fondly and remember the good times i had with it. Obviously, that's not going to be the same for everyone.
When my minivan was broken into in Barstow, CA, it was a teachable moment. 1) When you stay at a hotel, take everything out of the car 2) You can drive 70 MPH with a duct taped window. Now I always keep construction heafty bags and a roll of duct tape in my cars. I drove all the way from Barstow, CA to Las Vegas with that taped window. Las Vegas had a progressive repair shop that I kept the minivan at for a whole week and didn't even need to pay for parking on that trip. :) The thieves took some shoes, some stage magic gear, and kids clothes. They completely missed my XBOX One Dev Kit and my expensive Hue Go lights. :)
When I was a kid, my dad would leave stuff in the back of his truck all the time. I asked him "Aren't you worried someone will steal it?". His answer to me was, "If someone steals something, they probably need it more than I do.". A thirty second conversation that has stuck with me my whole life.
Mr. Adam Savage, My first introduction to you as a maker was myth busters, as I’m sure many of your fans are. I have been following your tested channel for a good time now. I am absolutely mesmerized by the way you craft and how you make what’s in your mind a reality. I do not know if I can consider myself a maker, per se, but at the very least I aspire to be one. I have been very creative since I was a young child, mostly focusing on wood work, and have been very excited to see anything you create. I would be thrilled to see more from that field by you. I know you don’t branch out that way often, but I know you have much knowledge to share. I know this seems off topic from the context of your video but I wanted to share my thoughts anyway. I love the notion of being a steward of, rather than the owner of, the objects in my possession. Your comment triggered a shift in my perception and spawned the thought that I need to take better care of those items for the next person, whoever they may be.
Oh wow dude this was a great clip. Thank you. This is really important. When you say that you’re a steward for these items that reminded me straight away of the Belloc line in Raiders .. “we are just passing through history”. And I wasn’t injured it was just money and it comes back. Thanks Adam! Much love from the U.K.

Your videos have driven me to at 41start my own little work space. I am not really a maker, but I love your videos. I am a computer tech. I now have a basic work bench, a basic table saw, basic drill press, and a basic staple/nail gun. My son and I made a wood stand for a computer he wants to build. Thank you for myth busters, thank you for your love of building, thank you for your honest builds, it makes me not get discouraged trying new things.
Not every day that a few minutes of RUclips video can fundamentally alter your worldview, but here we are. Mr. Savage, you are an amazing person, and thank you for sharing that with me.
I love the level of human empathy exhibited about people who have robbed you. Obviously those situations suck but what a nice sentiment. 💖
I love watching and learning how to make things, and learning such a positive outlook on life. Thank you for sharing!
I really love when someone explains to me why i love a movie, and i finally understand.
RIP Pat.
Pretty sure he was also the scimitar wielding guy that Indy shoots as well.
this one (the swordsman of Cairo) was Terry Richards according to wikipedia and the film's credits
11:22 Adam setting a really strong example here. The world would be a better place if we all approached it like this.
Thank you for giving me a 13 minute and 42 second break from the world. I needed that break more than you can imagine.
„Freaky people find you when you crack a whip in public, you intersect with their interest...“ wisdom in a Nutshell
Getting so fucking sick of retards who don't know what quotation marks are, or how to fucking use them!!! 🤬🤬🤬
@@maxnaz47 If you are not having fun you are doing something wrong.
As per usual, I come here to see incredible maker content and leave with inspiration to be a better person. Thank you.
It blows my mind that I just watched the Indiana Jones episode last night and was enthralled by the whips and now we’re here.
Love the fight sequence with Pat Roach in Raiders, a local fellow and a genuine great guy.

Adam, you're too good for this world. I wish you the best in the rest of your future!
Adam, you are such a warm soul and I am glad to be able to see that in you. Thank you for sharing with us.
When I was a kid, my dad would leave stuff in the back of his truck all the time. I asked him "Aren't you worried someone will steal it?". His answer to me was, "If someone steals something, they probably need it more than I do.". A thirty second conversation that has stuck with me my whole life.
Or they lack human empathy. Some people just want to destroy.
Mr. Adam Savage,
My first introduction to you as a maker was myth busters, as I’m sure many of your fans are. I would be honored to hear back from you.
Adam, what a philosophical approach to the theft of one's valuables. You are an emotionally evolved, healthy adult, which is nice to see.
Practicing with Bullwhips turned out to be a good pastime for quarantine, especially for rural areas.
The way Adam talks about and processes experiences even negative ones.... Humanity would prosper wildly if only we started thinking about things in a similar light
You always make me smile Adam. Your enthusiasm is contagious, and your happy, bubbly, personality, just makes me smile and giggle and laugh. Thank you for being so awesome.
I just want to commend you on your perspective. It really says a lot about a person who can look at getting robbed and take in all aspects of it. Good on you Adam.
This. This is why Adam has my utter respect.
I'm not tearing up, you are.
Who's cutting onions in here?
Hey, stop being blurry!
Unnus Annus at all? Because I would also like to know who's cutting onions in my proximity.
@@matthewgosling421 I WAS HOPING SOMEONE ELSE KNEW! WE'RE THE ONES CUTTING ONIONS
Little darts shooting out of the booby traps when he was stealing the golden idol captivated me as an 11 year old boy.
That was a great scene I think the big German guy was played by the late Pat Roach.
"People come. People show up."
Must be nice. They tend to ignore such noises around here.
When the big German guy, played by legendary Pat Roach, punches Indy in the jaw you see Indy's knees buckle!
Pat was in sooo may movies acting against massive stars, used to be a wrestler I believe but the role I remember the most: Auf Wiedersien Pet.
Was that Pat Roach ! I never realised that

He was also in Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, Red Sonya, Conan the Destroyer and A Clockwork Orange.

Ah lost it at the part about the guy wearing a dog collar! hahaha
Freaky guys are gonna find you...
Maybe it’s a British thing (I’m the other side of “the pond”) but my first thought was “what’s so freaky about a minister of religion coming up to speak with Adam?” Then I remembered this was in San Francisco, and I had an “a-ha” moment 🤭
@@theonlywoody2shoes I'm British and didn't even realise it wasn't a religious thing until I hit the comment section! Definitely a facepalm moment for me.
That's San Francisco for you ;-)
TESTED, you should do a Unautorised commentary of Raiders.
I'm so sorry for your losses. May next year bless you
dude....I love your stuff, always enjoy your charm and talent, but today...hearing you have such calm and peace about losing things to theft...your compassion about the thief...damn...you are inspiring...you have a wonderful philosophy and I am deeply moved....thank you!!
Dude, thanks for sharing all the bits of who you are. As a receiver of those treasures shared, joy.
Incredibly inspiring attitude, Adam. Seriously, having an attitude like that makes you a light in a dark world. Thank you.
What's you're address? I'll come take your shit and you'll really be inspired.
@@TheRodneyHayes No way! Stranger danger!
Love that Raiders fight scene with the plane. Want to make that as a model diorama one day. It indeed is a masterpiece of film work.
Anyone from the Midlands in the Uk watched that fight scene and said "Oh its Pat roach!" At the time a British wrestler. We were so proud to see him fighting in a hollywood movie.
A very stoic conclusion. Difficult to actually practice. Good on ya.
Wow. I dont think ive seen many people speak of the gratitude they have for getting to spend time with the things and people that have left their life. Ive seen some stuff and its pretty important to me. ty, its nice to know someone else thinks like you, esp someone you admire
I know he'll never see this, but maybe some other kindred will
i hope one day that whip is returned and found. That was one of my favorite episodes
Now that we have known you like over a decade, some of us will be here even if you are never on TV again. You are in the nerd club forever and an honored elder statesmen in it.
Also totally agree with you about being mugged, I was mugged and I had the same philosophical reaction to it eventually.. that person, who mugged me, more than likely has a terrible life. And I wasn’t injured it was just money and it comes back. Thanks Adam! Much love from the U.K.
I admire your view of 'possessing' objects. In fact it helps me now to get over some things I lost who were (and still are in fact) dear to me. Thanks a bunch Adam.
I always learn something here… Sometimes about tools, sometimes about life. Thanks for sharing, Adam!
