The more you focus on their songwriting, the more it hits you that "genius" is not nearly adequate enough to describe our Mincho.

These member documentaries are great for giving the background, but unless you follow the members' Instagram and Twitter feed you don't get a sense of how close they are now. Akane and Kanami have known each other since school days, and Akane had written a beautiful birthday tribute to her friend in the band's newsletter in September 2022. Here's a couple of excerpts.
"I met Kanami when I was a student and we became good friends right from the moment we first met."
"I was so happy that when I went to Kanami's house to visit her, Kanami's mother would welcome me and say, "Welcome home. So I always had to say "I'm home. Of course, when Kanami comes to my house, I welcome her back."
"I admired Kanami, who is kind to everyone, amiable, cheerful, earnest, hardworking, and loved by everyone. I wanted to be that kind of person too."
"I am so glad to have met Kanami. We became more than just best friends, we became a community of destiny, the five of us."

I just love how the quiet, sweet, motherly woman who brings homemade treats to band practice turns into a shred monster as soon as she starts playing.
And, apparently, the only time she loses her temper is when the others goof off to much at practice.

If Kanami starting guitar at 17 surprises you, Miyako from Lovebites started playing when she was 18. She was a classically trained pianist before that.

K-Ross, You should find and react to the acoustic version of "Puzzle". The hard rock version and the acoustic version are the same song , same lyrics, but two different emotional feels to them. The acoustic version is a duet with only Kanami and Saiki. Kanami's acoustic guitar and backing vocals are beautiful and haunting and Saki's vocals are incredible emotional and heartfelt. It will break your heart. Get some tissues.

Kanami for me is the musical genius of the band. All of the original music this band has made since 2016 was given life in her head. It's funny to hear the band talk in interviews, as when asked how such and such a song came about they reply, "We wanted a song like this, so we asked Kanami to make it!") You can see how beloved the members of the band are to Kanami in her songwriting, as she seems to write the music for them to shine. In some cases, such as "Don't Be Long," she writes a song (an etude) as a training vehicle for her bandmate (not to mention she taught the member how to play the guitar from scratch). Kanami is a unicorn: generational music talent devoid of ego combined with a crazy work ethic and devotion to her bandmates.

As the guest speakers all said,Kanami s guitar parts in all of their songs, serve the song to be the best it can be,,you have to see the Daydreaming MV,the ebbs and flows of that song are awesome, and the lead solo has the feels that are so emotional its amazing,,Kanami has said it was the hardest song she has had to put together,,great reaction again.

First of all, the "pigeon hole" is clever two ways. Kobato Miku 小鳩 ミク is a stage name where 小鳩 (Kobato) translates 小 "small" and 鳩 "pigeon". Second, this band maybe more than any other will defy any attempt to put them into a box or pigeon hole. Going down the pigeon hole is an experience like a Tardis ... it's much larger than you can imagine. It's the Unseen World.
The last commentator was Ryan Mear. He writes and plays and you should check out his channel. But he's exactly right about Kanami Tōno. It's interesting to see how others judge musicianship. For some people it's all about "having the techniques down" and for others it's how they make you feel. There's a certain amount of craft - you have to be in tune and in time - but you also have to express yourself with phrases. That clip where Kanami is playing "Daydreaming" on piano for instance. Notice how she speeds up and slows down, how she gets louder and softer. She has that way of expressing her emotions so _we_ can feel them.
Does anyone judge Edgar Degas on whether or not he can free-hand a straight line? I went to see an exhibit a few years ago that included one of his famous sculptures of a ballet dancer, along with practice castings and line drawings. My mom pointed out his line drawings were single lines - he put the pencil down and made a single line that captured the motion and essence of the dancer. No "sketching" or erasing - just pure "seeing it and drawing it." Those were not for the public, they were just pages out of his sketch pad; but the more I looked the more brilliant they became. Tōno has that effect too. She isn't "a guitarist" or even "a musician." She is an artist who has chosen music on a guitar as the medium to express herself.

People describe Miku as a fifty-year-old man with a thirty-something-year old woman's body. Kanami is an eight-year-old child with a thirty-something-year old body. She is sweet, gentle, shy, very naive, excitable like a child. She rocks, and swings, and flaps her hands, and behaves in the background like a child. She dotes on Saiki -- clutching her arm or holding her hand at Yokohama Arena, And yet she is the most educated member of the band. And a brilliant composer and guitarist. A child-genius. To the amusement of Misa and Akane -- and the alarm of Miku and Saiki -- Kanami added cat noises to one her compositions that she sent to the other band members. This is so Kanami. Eccentric child genius.

Kanami's now famous video of her private piano version of Daydreaming was so loved by fans that the band now start the song live with the piano intro. If you haven't seen the whole of the piano version try to find it- it's very emotional to listen to and was Kanami's personal favourite song. Still enjoying your reactions- you have so many beautiful moments to discover. You mentioned acoustic- A couple of suggestions. Puzzle and Anemone from the live Zepp Tokyo show DVD 2018 (the outro piece with Saiki's voice comes from this) and the bonus track Smile from the DVD of the Online Okyu-ji Feb 11 2021.

Many people can fall down a rabbit hole, but only true Band-Maid fans are willing and able to fall down a pigeonhole. Since their founder, rhythm guitarist and chief lyricist Miku Kobato refers to herself as a small pigeon because of her name, it makes sense to make the analogy of a pigeonhole as a gateway to all things Band-Maid including their great music and endearing personalities. Please enjoy the adventure in fully exploring this incredibly gifted band in detail. Po!

There are so many excellent bands that as you get to know them you realise what dicks many of them can be, arrogant with a fck the fans attitude. B-M are the exact opposite for me, the more I get to know them the more I adore them as talented, creative musicians and really wonderful people. Sigh, what a Band , I'd be damn proud to be their Uncle 😁😀👍🍻

For me, a key part of Band Maid songs is a strong, clear vocal melody line. A song is just a bunch of random notes with out a strong melody. The instrumental only versions of their regular songs, while very interesting, just don't sound complete with out the vocals. Their intended instrumentals sound complete because Kanami has worked a vocal melody line into her guitar parts. Just my opinion.

Other bands are Rabbit Holes, BabyMetal is the Fox Hole. BAND-MAID are the Pigeon Hole. Just do what the Pigeon says and nobody gets hurt. SAY! Speaking of learning Audio Programing, when she hands of the demo for MISA & Akane to do their thing with it, Akane will often say, "This drum part cannot be played by a human being. Good thing The Beast is Half Gorilla and Half Drum Machine because she always finds a way to make it work. The same thing would happen to The Beatles drummer, Ringo Starr. John Lennon would play a record for him and say, "Why don't you play it like that Ring?" And he would reply, "But that's two drummers, John!"

Thanks, that was fun. I think of Kanami as the music director for the band but she does lot of other stuff as well. She begins by writing the guitar parts and the vocal melody as well as programming placeholder bass and drum parts to demonstrate to Misa and Akane what she's thinking. She creates the backing track and creates a demo which she sends to the others. Misa and Akane rewrite their parts and send the data back to Kanami. Miku writes the lyrics and works with Saiki on the vocal arrangement and tweaking the melody. That all goes back to Kanami who then creates the final demo before they individually go to the studio and record. There is a lot of back and forth in all this with one side of the conversation usually being Kanami. They may get more pre-studio professional help now that they're making some money but I'm not sure. (Does anybody know?) By the way, the acoustic song you commented on was the acoustic version of Puzzle.
