31:42 The criticism on the flex is ligitim. Maybe some background: is was designed maybe two years after the first release of the N64Adv, which is designed - and it is still so - to get it installed with a bunch of loose wires if someone wants to go without flex cables in a DIY project. So I went for the solder solution instead of the ffc connector to be compatible with older PCBs out there. But I guess it's time to change the design a bit and go for simple connectors. 🙂
Would be handy to have simple connectors. I can imagine it would be a PITA if you ever have to disassemble the N64 again.
Borti, du bist der Beste😀
This might sound strange but I just like to listen to the sound of this man's voice 😅
Voultar and LockPickingLawyer have, hands down, the most soothing voices on RUclips.
"It doesn't matter. I don't care"
Love voultars videos.
I may wrongfully compare him to Deadpool. I mean I could listen to his voice and be happy. Until some no-name goons burst through the door and the bloodshed and screaming starts.
Don't feel weird. There are dozens of us. *Dozens.*
Voultar is the Bob Ross of the modders :) “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents”.
These kinds of videos are not only useful for those that want to mod game consoles, but they are also nuggets of information for basics in SMD soldering technique. Well done Voultar, an extra ration of rum for you lol
It should be called the milleNnial64
@@NesNytNah.
Great video as always! You get to learn and relax at the same time, you can't beat that. I think it would be great if you made a quick shop tour video going over some of the tools you have. Your soldering station video was a huge help, I can only imagine what other insights you might have for those of us trying to build up or upgrade our tool selection. Keep up the good work!
Looks great dude, always looking forward to a new video! Also thank you for showing the jewel 🙌🙌🙌
legend has it voltar hasn't taken off those glasses for 30 years because of....
the soldering iron incident
Actually I thought it was cause of the icepick incident.
You make it look so easy. Very nice work, professional mod and relaxing to watch. Keep up the good work!
Great video though I do have a minor suggestion if possible for future videos you could mention the temperatures to use for your irons especially when soldering the flex cables. I know from my experience doing the DC Digital mod and ruined the ribbon on my first try but from your suggestion on Twitter using a lower temperature helped me complete it successfully.
Just to clarify, what you are talking about It is a "Flat Flex Cable" or FFC. A ribbon cable is different.
@@GoatTheGoat yes, you're correct and I'll edit it. Had retro PC stuff on my mind that made think of ribbon cables lol.
The DC Digital was a tough one, and it took me a couple tries to get it right. Main problem for me was that, when I had one end of the FFC in place, it was ever so slightly out of alignment with the other chips it connects to. Ugh. Really hard on the soul to undo a flex cable joint that went reasonably well, just to get some other piece aligned.
This man gives me peace everytime he's soldering so perfectly
soul-dering ❤
Man I love this guy's videos and enthusiasm
Great to see you back! It's been too long! Any chance at any og xbox video in the pipeline would be cool? Also maybe a series of all the mods you would do for classic core consoles (nes, genesis, snes, all models) to work with the tink5x!?
Great mod work! if I was going ahead to make a riser on a 3d printer, I would just make it a full length bracket to provide support across the pcb and create a bumper so it never touches on the opposite screw side.
I'm not a fan of the 64 either but I will watch you Mod one...Good to see you again Lord Voltar...
Agreed 💯
Holy shit dude I was actually able to install this in my n64! Thanks for the video
I wanted to see a video about your sega bypass board install. Is one of your products you havent covered in a video . Great video!
this 'new' calm and teaching style is much more professional. great progress on your channel! keep the content coming!
but sometimes, just sometimes, I miss the cruel old rants :)
I heard about you threw a bunch of my friends that I know that do mods, just subbed.
My boy is literally promoting a competitor's product I respect that, modders recognize other modders achievements.
Just did one of these a couple weeks ago. I found it to be one of the easier mods I've installed. Didn't have the issue with the spacers although I do think the kits solution is a bit janky and agree that it should be revised.
By the way, great video. You should upload more often.
Nice Snake impression!
22:15 bro solid snake 💀💀💀☠☠☠
always a pleasure to see you work. When i saw the intel logo i was expecting another $200+ product
I'm with you Voultar, not a fan of the N64 either, but I still like watching these mod videos, great work!
Holy shit! Youre Voultar. Ive heard of your greatness
Lord Voultar has returned! We all needed some sexual healing! Oooooh!
Thank you for taking your time in your videos to explain soldering techniques. I have been a beginner with soldering for a very long time and these tips help a ton!
I watch this instead of porn while my wife went to sleep early. I do love a good soldering job.
Btw, I do love the "minimalistic" ring you have. Is it a wedding ring or just stylish?
The man, the myth, THE FUKKIN LEGEND! Glad to see your still taking names & kicking ass man. All the best! XD
me encanta el sonido del estaño fundiendose, solo Voultar es capaz de hacer ASMR de esto. Great job.
Master Voultar... You won my like just because i didn't knew that n64 consoles were so easily opened. Nice trick.
Lord Voultar, the Bob Ross of soldering
I’m gonna start this by saying I have a great relationship with my dad, that being said… every time he says great job or says you’re doing great it triggers that same emotion as my dad saying the same thing. Great man
Great! Amazing work as always Lord Voultar keep em' comming.
Is it just me, or does the intro give him the vibe of a pro wrestler? With the sunglasses and his posture, I feel like he was about to drop a promo saying he was gonna kick some ass.
When securing a wire with a screw you should have the loop in a clockwise orientation so the screw will pull it tighter
Let’s go! Thanks for making more great instructional content.
"I'm a strap-on fanatic".
"It's what all of the scene kids say."
Dead. Absolutely dead.
Voultar, that cut is fresh af.
I bought a NS1 n64 from eBay and it doesn’t have any of the points for the RGB mod. It doesn’t even have the spots labeled for it. What can I do?
I made an n64 rgb amp for my NS1 model with like 4$ worth of parts 3 days ago using a THS7316
Forgive my noobness. Can i install the chip without the ribbon cable? Can i individually solder wires to their respectful pins from the chip to the board?
Voultar you are awesome thankyou for sharing your skills 😀 From the land of Oz so got a NTSC N64 from Japan on its way to do the cheaper mod. ❤️ watching you shoulder a master class. thankyou for sharing your skills.
Well, at least I can purchase this if I decide to, unlike other mod videos. I mean, why even show something that no one can even purchase?!!!!!! asinine Voultar, you're killing it, love your work!!
As usual, great explanation and teaching great soldering skill, with professional narration.
The component video solution via the printed dongle is enough for me to get this. Was looking at eTim’s kit and was going to use HDR SNES cables, but that looks like it’s more expensive than this solution
That's one to-the-point title for the video. Cheers, Voultar!
Miss the vids. Thank you for helping to educate the community. ^_^
I don't know if you do mods for sega genesis, but if you do, would be nice to have your opinion on the sega genesis triple bypass. That mod for me is a very complex one so would be nice if you could give some hints about it.
He has other videos he's lifted pins on showing the technique. And I think he helped designed the 3bp so I'd say he's a fan. Long Island Retro Gamer has a video of the install
This is pure joy, just watching master of his craft. Despite I don't love N64 either.
I brought an n64 with the rgb advanced borti as I just couldn’t face the job of doing. Looks great though.
Like that dual KSGER station setup!
What temp was your iron? Sorry if i missed it if it was in the video
I'm not a huge fan of the N64 myself but I kinda wish I had an excuse to do these kinda mods though I'd want to get the proper tools first as I dont think I'll get very far with my dumb ol 40 watt iron without flux, braid or decent proper solder (Basically got the Iron and soldier back in 2008 from Canadian tire to muck about with stuff).
Great video by the way, this was informative and interesting :)
Thanks for this video Voultar! I really need to buy more iron tips. I've always just used a conical.
My N64RGB was finally supposed to arrive today, but because USPS is USPS, it's now supposed to arrive tomorrow. So close!
Great work as always Lord Voultar. Something very satisfying watching that clean soldiering technique completed to perfection. Love me some rocker gaming custome jewelry too looks magnificent👍👍👍
love this guy! the Mr Rogers of console mods
Isn’t it possible to use the HD Retrovision SNES component cable with this mod instead of the Wii version with the adapter?
Where do I get that adapter
@Voultar put the link in the description of the video for the adapter. I believe the HD Retrovision SNES component cables can be used with Voultar’s RGB mod and I assumed they could also be used with this mod. That’s why I asked because he used the Wii component cables with the adapter.
For real though good stuff as always Mr. Tar. Soldering really, REALLY benefits from patience and calm, and you always convey that very well in your videos. I continue to use you for all of my male anatomy *AHEM* I mean soldering technique references, even outside the realm of video game consoles.
He's alive!!
2:43 Just curious but which inline torque screwdriver are you using there?
Ah the Nintendo 64, still quite possibly the greatest looking console ever.
Think I might get one of these to replace my N64RGB, those flex cables make the install so tidy.
intreagued that you never mention what temp the iron is.
hmm i hope in the future they will use a switch system to allow easier configs on the jumps
With the N64 modded as per this video or with your traditional rgb mod, is there any benefit using the HD Retrovision Wii cables vs the HD Retrovision snes cables? I currently use your traditional N64 rgb mod with the snes cables hooked up to a crt. Why use the Wii cables with that adapter when the snes cables plug right in?
No, not really.
How does the UltraHDMI detect controller input for it's OSM without the additional two wires? Or am I not understanding their purpose?
How long can you heat up the gpu legs before it fries the chip?
How much heat should I use on my soldering iron?
Thank you for the usual nice and detailed video! I am looking for a solution like this one for my N64, that is a bit strange. I bought at launch in Japan, one of the really first batch, and for years I used in in RGB by simply connecting the three vias to the proper pin on the output. The image was perfect: proper brightness, no problem whatsoever. Then I read on RetroRGB that using this method, without any RGB amplifier, could cause damage to console. So I tried with three different RGB amplifier but then the image was waaaaay too bright. Is it possible that the really first JP N64 are somewhat different from the later ones? Maybe a solution like this one, that taps directly at the source and not at video encoder, is the way to go for me (no HDMI, since I play on CRT Projector, so analog RGB is perfect).
I've seen other modders using various Electronic Precision Screwdrivers. Which one do you recommend for someone on a budget? Haven't been able to find much info from actual professionals on this subject. Google only gives me those random generic 10 Best lists that are mostly just advertisement.
What general purpose solder would you recommend? New to this, more of a learning hobby but so many brands and so many types. I know of the good brands but even than they will offer 30+ types which to me inexperienced all look exactly the same.
Just hoping to find something which can make the learning experience a little more pleasant is all.
Thank you for your time!
leaded solder is best, don't use the lead free shit
Great stuff as usual. What's on dodgy VHS tape stashed under the desk?
That's a porno that I've been meaning to transfer over, digitally for the past 12 years.
I have an OG Wii component cable, bought way back when, would I be able to use it with this mod?
Can someone give me a hint of which solder flux voultar uses? I only find crappy ones :(
Have you tried installing Doujindance’s PC Engine Duo RGB kit? Love to see you give it a go 👍
Great video, I have a question. On a N64 FRA, is it best to go "official" RGB mod (soldering missing pieces) or this kind of mod ?
If your unit is compatible, the basic amp is certainly far cheaper and easier to install. It's mostly down to whether you care about the extra features, for simple SCART output the quality is pretty much identical.
To update firmware with jtag the j3 has to be bridged i believe but there are 3 contacts. Do i bridge all 3?
This is the most Bob Ross modding tutorial I've ever seen.
Great video dude. Would love to see you do the xboxhd+ mod.
Keep em comin! 🤘😎
I don't fully understand, but does this disable anti aliasing, or is it loaded with a clever filter to clean as much of the damage as possible?
It's a clever inverse filter to undo internal blur filtering in the VI (video interface) stage of the RCP, hence "VI deblur". This is completely separate from the primary anti-aliasing most games use, which can't really be undone by post-processing.
You can sometimes disable the actual AA in-game (Quake 64) or with a gameshark, but usually it just looks worse.
Love the work you do, dude. Its kinda cringe that you have that desktop drill thing, but no real screwdriver, but we've all been in similar circumstances, I guess.
It's kind of cringe that you don't know the difference between an electronics screwdriver and an actual drill, yet here you are making stupid comments like this.
which solution is best for use on an SD CRT (bubble tube) that has component? i want to avoid all those filters, scalers, line doublers etc.. that destroy the image, just want a literal raw component (or SCART to ypbpr) method. links or names of kids would be of help :) using a jungle green n64
HD Retrovision or similar cables with a simple RGB mod such as Voultar's would be the simplest method. For newer systems (such as yours, probably), Tim Worthington's mod can also do it, just ignore the extra features.
Can you fix my dead drive in my bc ps3 and upgrade the fans and cooling? Or point me to someone who does that kind of work well?
Lord Voultar the veteran always makes everything look so easy :-)
Great flex cables better than the Tim's mod I did a couple years ago now!
Man, steady hands there brother.
You didn't need the plastic spacer. Clearly, you just needed to lay down a fat bed of hot glue.
Man, it looks great! And it's not as expensive as the HDMI mod kits. Question, though: Is this the best option for those who have a newer N64 and have an external video processor? I have a Funtastic N64 and an OSSC, and I'd like to have an option that is not as expensive as the HDMI kits. It looks like the N64 Advanced might be the option I'm looking for (in terms of price and features), but since I already have an OSSC, I don't necessarily need the Line Multiplier option it has.
Anyways, great job with this video, and thank you for all the invaluable information!
IMO, using an external processor is a much better value than the current HDMI offerings if you have more than one system you'd like to upscale.
"Let's do it to it"....you got that from Sonic.
Question how are you cleaning the tip are you just using a wet sponge?
Extremely descriptive, I love it!
Wow ! This flex cable seems to have little silver ingots at the end! :D
As cool as this is, I'm so glad my N64 was compatible with your board. Perfectly fine with my 5X doing the heavy lifting.
What temperature do you set your iron for this type of job?
This man is so wholesome that's the vibe I get.
outside the funky controler and the limited onboard memory what don't you like about the n64?
also that Kaving in Glover is used in THe legend of Zelda ocarina of time and majoras mask
@Malice oh I know how badly golden eye is on the n64 I traded that one in soon as I could. Shooters need twin sticks or “light gun” to really work but the n64 was more a party console or for the 3D platform era of it’s time more then for fps’s
I use the sweeping technique o.o"
I know you have a 3d printer but I don't... Lol I've use cut to shape 24oz soda bottles to insulate(on my own stuff)
Are any of these kits in stock anywhere? 😐 Always sold out by time i discover them!
Anyway good guide thx!
They really should have gone with a ribbon connector on the PCB side. In this day and age that's more or less a standard feature.
