In this post, I explore the importance of working memory and how we can train it. Working memory is far more than a store we use when remembering numbers. Rather, it is the mental workspace we use for visualization, mentally manipulating objects, and even organizing the movement of our body in space.
In fact, working memory may even be responsible for our very conscious experience of the world: by allowing us to stitch together the snapshots we take of the world around us and filling in the gaps with schemas, memories, and assumptions.
If we could increase our working memory, we could experience a richer sensation of the world around us. Be wittier in conversation. Be better at problem solving. Move more gracefully. Seemingly slow time around us.
Common methods for training working memory include dual n-back and chess. However, as we will see, these fall short of emulating the richness of this mental capacity.
In this post, I explore the mechanisms of working memory in depth and recommend alternative strategies: including a free app you can download from the link above.
Enjoy and bye for now! Хобби

You may be socially awkward, but you are quite likeable.
I hope to see you in Heaven one day!
By the looks of this world, may be sooner rather than later.
In case no one has presented salvation to you...
ABC's of Salvation:
A: Admit that you are a sinner, who violates the Will of God, and that you need a Saviour. Repent. Turn away from your sin and toward Jesus. (Matthew 4:17; Romans 2:4, 3:10, 6:23; Acts 3:19)
B: Believe that Jesus Christ, Son of God & Messiah, died for your sins and rose again, and that He will come again, as prophesied and recorded in the Word of God. Trust in His finished work on the cross. (Romans 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Ephesians 2:8-9)
C: Call on His name, ask Him to save you, and confess that He is Lord. (Romans 10:9-10, 10:13, 14:10-11; Philippians 2:10)
Jesus probably likes you too.
Definitely loves you.

As a brain tumor survivor, that suffered a mini-stroke during the initial craniotomy, I’ve been struggling to recover my cognitive and physical abilities for over a decade. The radiation therapy really put the kibosh on both long and short term memory. Love the book and the channel. Cheers to you good sir.👍
You should make videos on your progress, I’m sure there’s ALOT of people that would benefit from what you know
I agree with ya,but a lot of the easily recognizable hallmarks of recovery were achieved before I started the channel, such as working in China for a while. Then the tumor started growing again, and pretty aggressively, which necessitated the need for radiation therapy.

Have you tried transcranial magnetic stimulation. I hear it's really good for TBI patients. There's also neurofeedback that can help regulate your brain waves.
I have heard of the magnetic therapy, but not the other. All of the second opinions I have received are about the same. My type of oligodendroglioma I not curable, only treatable for so long. I try and push hard each day, for my family and friends.
Yes! More of these! As an ADHDer, working memory is a constant struggle. Thank you! 🙏🏽
Same here buddy
I always just assumed Adam knew he was one of us...
I just found out that I have ADHD in August
Working memory is something that can be improved, I am an architecture student for ~2 years now and with all the floor plans and sections they forced me to make, when I enter space I just try to imagine what the floor plan would look like and I memorize the whole space. It also doesn't require much attention span, when I am tired with one part of the room/building I go to some other part and let my imagination loose. Now I try to memorize every place I visit for fun instead of memorizing texts (which I have always sucked at, but with this I enjoy it so I am improving exponentially xd)
@@sansamman4619, although you are right that working memory can be trained, it is actually long term (LT from here on) memory you are talking about. Working memory is memory regained within 30-60 seconds. Any memory longer than that basically is LT memory.
To explain ('m a 2yr psychology student enrolling into uni this year): by visualizing the floorplans and memorizing the space, you condition your working memory to be safed in LT memory. The deeper level of internalisation, thus the more you try to condition information more deeply, the stronger your long term memory is of given information.
Basically you use already safed LT memory to relate it to new information that is given. This way your brain links a certain memory to another, already existing, LT memory.
Adam. I started juggling because of you when I read functional training and beyond. I'm pretty damn good at it now and can even do tricks. I noticed when you juggle your elbows flare out a bit. If you keep your elbows tight to your body it will improve your juggling massively.
Ooh thanks for the tip!

This is perfect timing for me. I was just telling one of my good friends how I’d love to work on my memory if it’s possible!
Keep doing it, man. I want to improve my memory and cognitive function as well as my body. I was glad to see a trusted trainer was looking into it. ✊️

I have found that jiu jitsu has help immensely with my adhd and working memory. Having to keep track of eight limbs and body balance in the midst of another person trying to (nicely) injure you really does pay dividends when it comes to brain function but also mind body connection

Ok this guys is becoming more and more like the batman and i love it! U really look like ur trying to get that perfect complete killer dangerous body that s good in all the areas, body, mind, spiritual level, everything. Thank uuu soooo mucchhhh for sharing ur videos.
I use concepts like this, in the form of dual-tasking, in physical therapy to help patients be sturdier for actual everyday-and-beyond challenges.
Dual-tasking is simply performing to things at the same time: here: juggling+balancing. It could be counting backwards while doing squats, catching balls flying at you while keeping an upright posture while walking, or for really old patients something as simple as talking and listening while walking over small obstacles.
I love your explanation in this matter! Keep it up and thank you!
Loving your videos mate
Your channel has one of the best quality fitness community !!
The most important thing is doing a variety of mental exercises. I was really sharp in high school when I was running cross country, doing normal school work, playing an instrument, reading a lot, writing a bit, learning a language, programming, working with my hands and machinery on a robotics team (FIRST). Lately as an adult I've let some of these things go and have noticed a real decline in how "sharp" my brain feels over the past couple years. And then when I have a week where I find time to do as many of these things as possible, plus the meditation practice I've picked up, I feel much more like myself.
same. but in the end, do you mean you felt sharp again like when you were in high school? just wanna know whether i can recover from that brain decline if i make time for mental exercises. i really miss the old me tbh
Yes you can but you can't reach their only with mental exercises. You need to sleep more and eat healthier and be less stressed. After doing those things the rest will surely come.@@sweetie_py

Hey Adam, my thanks and support from Aus! I've just graduated my neuroscience degree and am beginning my research thesis in visual neurobiology this year. Love all your videos for the cross over that only nerds can create between functional training and neurobiology/psychology!
I'm not a physician but as someone who has looked into it in some detail, and as someone who has Adhd (hyperactive impulsive subtype) it sounds like you are certainly within the adhd spectrum! But it is a superpower in its own way, sometimes for example having a proclivity to be distracted by the coloured dots can allow for solutions that a single minded/focused approach can't perceive.
Looking forward to see your app develop, thanks for the great content as always.

I have ADHD which is a big part of my short term memory loss. Years ago I used to do mindfulness exercises which didn't seem to help me. I'm considering meds at this point because it's affecting my ability to work effectively but thankfully I always have a strong will to learn so I'm constantly learning programming, new languages or just widening my knowledge in world history and nutritional science. I like to think that constantly learning things and regularly exercises will help me in the long term. There is also a lot of scientifically conducted evidence that constantly learning through your whole life can help prevent or delay alzheimers disease.
The meds work at first, make it worse in the long run. Stopped taking them after about 6 months. Doing some 72+ h fasts has helped with my ADD, though sadly not nearly as much as it has helped other issues like depression, which seems to be pretty much gone.
@@LTPottenger I remember you from comments on physionic's channel
While it’s always important for us to work on our weaknesses, make sure you also celebrate the ADVANTAGES you have by having ADHD.
You have your own superpowers, so exercise them in their proper context. 🦸♂️
I'm a hyperactive spazz !!! I learned to embrace it, enjoy it, and use it to my advantage. Most people who are cool and have confidence dont have 10% of my mental talent. They can never have the brainpower I have. However, once I learned how to use my brain power, I started to train myself to project confidence(even if I didn't have it at the moment) and now I also have leadership abilities and the characteristics that go with it. THE EXPERTS ARE WRONG AND THE DRUGS ARE BAD FOR YOU !!! EMBRACE YOUR INNER SPAZZ !!!! P.S. ONLY DATE SMART WOMEN WHO UNDERSTAND YOU. MOST 7-10'S HAVE NO LOYALTY .
@@LTPottenger HOLY COW 72+ hours, I do 16 hours at the moment working my way up to 24 hours.
Don't overlook the power of reading. It may seem simple but reading is a complex activity that uses a lot of different areas of the brain. Both fiction and nonfiction use different mental abilities and can help improve cognition and be protective against damage.
Hi, thank you very much! It's great. I'm going to try the app, precisely at this moment I'm going through mental stress and I want to remember important information I forgot.
One thing that I can remember for sure about what made me have a nice memory back when I was a kid was literally playing memories games with my father and reading thoses colourful kids books and trying to remember the colors. Doing this over the time really made my memory get better since I'd exercise it since a young age. As the years passed I still exercise my memory with cards and games like mahjong (I'm kind of addicted to this game)
And I can fell the benefits of theses exercises since today and it improved my studies at astronomical levels because of the way I can hold information.
Great vid!
I started teaching myself guitar 3 years ago. Other than incredible progress on the guitar, I also can keep information from texts better than before, I can focus on stuff longer and got way better at multitasking. It even helped me in social situations as I can remember minor details of stuff people told me. The improvements might also be because of other lifestyle enhancements like meditating, but I started this much later
bro, great video and an awesome app?!? This is so cool!
Thank you.
I'm a uni student and i really need this kind of video ❤️
Thank you bioneo
Yes! I love the idea of cognitive training!
That's cool, will download your app 🙂🙏
Great vid. I have that same problem with switching tasks.
My working memory needs work for sure. Doesn't matter how interesting it is, if I'm not using the info (making it hands on in that way) it doesn't usually stick. On the other hand, I still remember things that happened on a TV show I saw literally one time years later, or video games. I don't understand my brain, but there has to be a way to take advantage of that.
Been trying to think of ways to format the information in these ways to memorize it. Writing it down and personalizing it basically (which I became terrible at notes after school, not sure why).
Lotta work ahead.😤
Really appreciate your work, very inspiring.👍
Thank you.
Off the top of my head that would tell me that you should be finding a way to make things more photographic. I'd recommend using visual systems like mind palace, making up wacky scenes in your head, comparing things to in life objects, finding a news article on Google to help get a real world example, etc. Basically anything that paints an image In order to hold on to information better. For example when thinking of integers in mathematics I like to think of the 0 as a portal that carries us between negative and positive numbers (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3) for me creating one small image or scene like quality is enough to boost retention and usually the brain will automatically fill any remaining information.
I swear every time there is a shot outside,at a cafe or walking about it looks as if you are Matt Damon and there's a villain waiting around the corner 😅.
Super content, I am a juggler and a flow artist and I couldn't describe how much it helped me at a young age to become friends with my own brain. Cheers 🔥

Learning a new language has helped both my short and long term memory a lot.
I’m learning a language with a totally different alphabet and writing system, so I really have to work my brain to read and translate everything.
Thanks for the app! I'll be doing it while balancing on a medicine ball I think
Great video, youre doing godswork
Great video! I know it's a bit older now so I'm probably not the first person to mention it, but my wife's a psychologist and I understand that one of the best correlations they've found between an activity and improved working memory was the so-called "stroop test" (saying whether a colour matches the colour that it's written in, or being shown a colour word, e.g. "blue" and having to read that it says blue even though it actually appears written in red.)
I got kind of obsessed with this a few years ago and really nailed some general ability tests that I had to do after a few weeks of doing those tests regularly.
I definitely want to see more of this type of stuff
I think the wobble board juggling is a great idea. Reminds me of hooking up a wii balance board to my PC and using it for FPS movement. Relearning how to move in game while still using my hands for interaction was quite a thing. Absolutely on point about caffeine too. Whenever I plan to do some complicated programming I try to be sure that I only have a little caffeine or none in the preceding 24 hours. It can be a great tool to use as a source of stress when trying to train to overcome stress related performance issues, but it is not an aid in normal circumstances.

Do you believe in fate? LOL. I was just looking for ways to train my working memory last few days due to having ADHD and all of a sudden you post a video about it. Also re-watched a couple of your old videos on meditation and stuff. Your channel is awesome man, keep up the great work.
Would LOVE a video on eyesight health and training
There is also a version of n-back training called quad n-back, you can add arithmetic, pictures and other variables to it.
This stuff has always been so groovy to me and I'm always thrilled to see each new one as they are released. The body only functions if the mind tells it to. Ergo, the higher the brain function, the faster it can solve obstacles in the physical realm.
I sincerely appreciate your courage of transparency. Your story reaches a,lot of people who otherwise may be silent and ashamed of the subject. I have the same issue and I've tried so many things to figure it all out. Everything from rote memorization techniques to respond to specific, everyday scenarios, to practicing alone in my room, to meditation, to psychoanalysis (when I had contact with someone I could speak to), brain training apps, and etc. Finally, I just told my friends and they just accepted it. I admit, martial arts, story telling, and drawing are the things that seemed to really pull me into "normal".
Comics has entered the chat. They were so stigmatized when I was growing up, but I didn't care. They helped me through a lot: escape from reality, boost in vocabulary, training in working memory, focus, and the list goes on. I'm glad we can now borrow comics and manga through public library now, as well as purchase them online, at any time, and are acceptable in society. I hope my miceo-autobiography helps anyone needing it. Well, provided they make it so far. Cheers!

About meditation and shifting tasks: while focusing on the breath trains the mind's ability to focus, other techniques, such as the Mahasi vipassana technique, can probably help with shifting tasks.
Level 4 of that application is amazing so challenging it MAGA HELPS U
It's disappointing that these are your least performing videos because I find them at the very least just as satisfying as any of your physical ones.
I would like to see you doing your app while on a balance board! 👍😀 Great content!
As someone who does training for FPS games, I think you are exactly right. This all jives with my experiences in training. The biggest issue of training transfer into games is that training often exists in simple environments to master skills in parts, but when you go into a game, it's difficult to keep all of the parts in mind while also trying to actually play the game -- the training, it seems, makes you great the skills but puts no pressure on building efficient systems. I think your cognitive-pressure approach is the way. Take a skill you want to improve, add working memory pressure on top of the skill, and presumably you will stress the brain into compression -- force your brain to cut away the fat and pick up the details that matter to make the skill still run.
Thanks!
This explains why you can see an outside view of your car and everything around it similar to how you might have a video game whilst driving. It’s sort of like an imaginary proprioception where the inputs are the wind and the tire noise as well as what you can see.
I'm so glad you touched on this subject. I have a terrible memory. I cant remember anything, my other problem is that I have a terrible memory and cant remember anything.

Great job describing how the brain works. We stress working memory a lot doing vision therapy with TBI and learning related vision problems. I prefer real-space activities to computer though. Maybe VR is getting close but I still like trampolines and tossing beanbags. The cognitive loading has been a great tool usually. On your training program if you haven't already considered , some sort of movement component would be nice, particularly involving cross patterning with feet, or maybe a digit thinking, etc.

As usual, a thoroughly researched overview… and one not without some philosophical conundra impli it within. For instance, the appeal to computer oriented analogies to describe or strive to understand neurological process: does reliance on that framework perhaps limit or even potentially our understanding of the mind? :) Leaving that hot potato on the warming plate for a moment though, I wonder if you’ve yet become acquainted with the work of Iain McGilchrist? One of the central themes he explores is the role of hemispheric Lateralization in consciousness, and, his offerings are apposite of some of the personal questions you raised in the video. McGilchrist has several lectures and interviews readily on YT and elsehwere, so you can have an aperitif before deciding whether you wish take the entrée of one of his books. Again, many thanks for all of your work !
Hahaha the matrix bullet szene. Your Videos got so high-end!
Good job with Hybrid Calisthenics 😃👍. I think similarly to you. I have an interest in engineering and how the mind and body works. I came be absent minded and disorganized. Though I have not received any support to help get me to be successful in my education.
I will start using your app to improve my boxing. Here is how I will use it:
Every square is a punch,
red square = jab
white square = cross
green square = a punch/movement that is different each time
I would count how many jabs and crosses I do + the times I did something other than jabbing and crossing.
+ I am pretty good at math and since I have no one to tell me "16*8" or something, I just solve equations that take 7+ steps to solve.
One more thing, I believe diving and swimming can also be a very effective way to make your working memory better by:
Improving your stroke technique, you need to be aware of your movements and remember where your limbs are and where you will have to put them next.
I also have fun with going to the middle of the pool, holding my breath and moving around, spinning, flipping all the while being extremely aware of my body and where my body was (not as much with where I will put my body next because almost all of is spontaneous, when I run out of breath I try to think of cool ways to come up and take a breath).
This helps me a lot for boxing, but I must say I am bad at basketball and football, my depth perception for anything further than two arm lengths is stupidly bad, I am only good with things that require awareness of where I am and not some fast flying thing going by (I especially suck at goalkeeping)... Hope I helped in some way
This is genius! And actually it has some similarities to something I'll be talking about soon! Stay tuned 😁 (You may find that using sounds instead of visuals is more practical for boxing - stay tuned on that too!)
Also, I think you're right about swimming. It's complex proprioceptive movement!
The baddest thumbnail on the internet!
Nice video
