People who have lived for decades in one place and worked hard their whole life in one field and are afraid of losing their homes (especially amongst rising property value, and thus taxes).
It is slightly possible that people don't want their children and grandchildren and on and on paying interest-only on the massive debt that keeps growing as the country spends more than it brings in. Try doing that as an individual and see how long it lasts.
I would go as far as to say, that taxes aren't everything that matters in life. (It's also not what solely qualifies the most powerful man in the world.) Probably it's more about how reliable and trustworthy a person is. And whether the person sticks to a certain mindset on which he decides. As a person who represent the United States it might also come handy to have at least some honesty, dignity and to be reputable. If you look at how most states voted, most blue states were all red, with two or three blue hot spots that just had more dense population. New York and Oregon were both red everywhere but two or three cities. Imagine if the individual states had electoral colleges.
Something like 85% of the landmass in America is red.
If America quarantined cities into city states we'd be way happier and more productive. I live in California (rural/suburban edge of San Diego, there's ranches behind my house and forests but town in front of my house) and 90% of our taxes go to bullshit we don't want and never see. Quite frankly, being able to do the same to the lunatics who seem to be in charge of much of the USA's higher education system and entertainment industry these days is one of the most compelling arguments for allowing radical progressive leftist party to exist. Moderate progressives are actually necessary and useful.a good balance of them and Actual conservatives is quite necessary to a functioning legislature, and nation. Radical progressives are at least as damaging as Reactionaries, and usually just as delusional. Though they're more insidious, as the more toxic elements amongst them tend to target those in positions of power (though, naturally, this rapidly becomes anyone insufficiently supportive of their particular flavour of lunacy) rather than the reactionary' equivalent's tendency to target the obviously disadvantaged.
