- If you’re looking for a budget friendly easy-to-use shotgun, the Savage-Stevens 301 may just be for you.
It says Savage on the box, and the website is Savage.com, but I think Savage-stevens is the mother company- says “Stevens model 301” on the barrel
It comes in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, .410 bore, standard 26” length barrels, compact 22” barrel, and a special turkey version.
Super simple break action with spring loaded ejector, manual safety, screw in chokes, bead site... all for under $200
Great value, and they function just fine. - Спорт
I was correctly corrected, this is a Stevens 301 not a Savage.
They are basically the same company
@@fuzztsimmers3415 yeah I know but the correction police have a field day with stuff like that lol
@@crankygunreviews Listed as Savage Stevens online, so the correction police are not really correct. Modified choke?
@@gregzeigler3850 I think it was modified
I have always liked a 410 long barrels. I did go out and purchase the 301 finding an excellent little gun.
I ended up selling mine and purchased a Harrington and Richardson vintage single shot .410 instead. My buddy bought the 301 and uses it to dispatch critters who try to eat his chickens
Single shot shotguns are awesome.I have the 301 Turkey version in 20 & 410.I don't really care about hunting turkey but they are excellent plinkers.A ton of fun.Simple to take care of.
I just picked up a Harrington and Richardson model 088 in 20 gauge that I’ll have a video on soon as well, another single shot budget shotgun.
@@crankygunreviews H&R ..just wishing they had chokes..
Excellent shotguns.
If you ever get the chance...latch onto a Iver Johnson .410
I've been shooting mine for fifty years. Still as tight as the day it came home with us
@@timhudson1846 I have one H&R 12 gauge that has chokes- the Pardner Turkey 12 gauge.
I'm looking this type of gun for so long
@@kvaipheikvaiphei8836 they’re easy to find
I bought one for $99 when America was great again. Ammo can be expensive and hard to find, but had a great time shooting skeet camping in the desert with my boys.
I’m starting to reload .410
Good video. I got one in 12 gauge this week and am liking it.
It’s a fun gun
What I noticed is the savage has no swivel mounts, the stevens DOES regardless of model. So if you're looking for this Stevens>Savage if you want a strap and not have to add your own hardware.
Gotcha
I totally agree.. the safety is only there for the import laws. Its not necessary at all.
I removed the safety on mine.
The safety is quiter than cocking the hammer, them critters got good hearing.
I’m looking to get the 301 turkey in 20 gauge for an all arounder as a lightweight hiking/ hunting ( rabbit, squirrel, turkey, quail, dove ) shotgun that I can also keep under the bed for home defense… just change out the choke for different game….
It’s a super reliable and dead simple gun! For the price, they cannot be beat
Kind of like an old H&R, but it has choke tubes and that safety.
Yep, I like the screw in chokes, but not a fan of the safety
I like it very much sir
@@kvaipheikvaiphei8836 👌
I got one of these had to send it to the factory the ejector kept sticking on spent shells happened with 3 different brands of ammo hope they fix it I really like shooting it I got it for Turkey season it's great at busting Clays I hope to get it back here soon
Mine shoots the shells really far when they eject it
@@crankygunreviews yea mine does to but it just sticks I dont know what's wrong with mine
@@deltadragon2335 ream your chamber with a brass or copper brush on a drill, at medium speed.. Cleans out the plastic from the fired shells.
@@robertboreman7672 the gun runs fine now the factory replaced the spring and it has been working great now no problems already bagged me a Turkey with that bad boy
Good video been looking for a decent priced 410 shotgun at that price may buy a 12, 20 and a 410
Yeah the 12 and 20 gauges are only just over $200 when I’ve seen them. Can’t get much more reliable than a break action
I have the 12. I was going to use it for Turkey hunting.
It does shoot Low... I have read the same thing from other people.
Survival Gun- probably better.
Yeah, there isn't much ability to change sights on these.
😮 nice gun
And inexpensive too!
The manual saftey switch keeps the hammer off firing pin so if you drop the gun or pull hammer back and decide not to shoot the hammer won't fall against firing pin and go off when you do not want it to. The manual saftey is there for those around you so you won't accindently fire the gun off. Use The Saftey!
I’ll use it if I hunt- if I’m at the range, I don’t see the need
@@crankygunreviews At the range is when you practice using the saftey so you know it real well when you're hunting. For the sake of anyone else with you or around you use the saftey no matter where you're at shooting any type firearm.
@@rayjohn3946 this particular gun has a transfer bar like a modern revolver, so if the hammer is down, it physically can never hit the firing pin, also the safety can only be engaged if the hammer is cocked, and if you pull the trigger, the hammer drops onto the safety, then you have to re-cock the hammer to turn the safety off… with a transfer bar, you don’t need this manual safety, except when you want to carry it hammer back in your example for hunting to keep the gun from “clicking” when you cock the hammer
Very nice gun I really want to get one so what shall I do for buying it please give me the suggestion....
Look on gunbroker or at a local shop.
how is setting the choke??I noticed you never changed the choke, switching from bird shot to slugs??
You’re right I never changed the choke. You can shoot slugs through even a full choke because they swage as they pass through. I would not shoot a slug through a Turkey or extra full choke though…
It's basically an updated version of the old new england shotguns
Yep pretty much. The old ones were better built though. I have bought an NEF to replace this one and an H&R in 20 gauge as well recently. I may pick up another 20 gauge H&R and shorten it to a 19” barrel for fun
@@crankygunreviews better built ?
I dunno ? These savage Stevens model 301s are very well built.
Like you I'd rather have Americans building it
But in today's world..
The Stevens is very good.
You say you've acquired an H&R 088 twenty gauge.
Hate to say it.. but you'll like the Stevens 301 better.
The recoil of the twenty H&R is brutal. She'll jump up and smack you in the face.. ask me how I know...lol
I like the recoil pad on the Stevens ALOT ..
@@timhudson1846 yeah the O88 does kick more, but it’s still a better gun- I also got the New England firearms Pardner in .410, and it’s a way better gun that the 301
@@timhudson1846 yea, the older NEF and H&R were way better built
Than the 301
Where do you find chokes to fit it? Browning invector chokes I was told fit it but there is still a small gap in the bore where it isn't flush
Only a couple places I have see with any .410 chokes- I just used what it came with. I thought it used mossberg patterned chokes but I could be wrong.
I like the recoil tho while he was shooting
Virtually none
I just bought one of these yesterday. it is a Turkey model with an extra full extended choke. I want to buy an open choke for is also, but am not sure where to get one. Online searches have been confusing. Can you or anyone here help? I will probably keep the Xtrafull in it mostly, but want to be able to hunt deer if I had to. Would need an optic then, and am not sure which way to go, but I was thinking low power scope. But mostly it will be for squirrels that keep out of range of my pellet gun.
You need to find out what thread pattern the Stevens has- then check eBay. I found a few there a while ago.
An in depth pattern testing video is in order.... 2.5 and 3" shells with #8 and 7.5 shot..... These are the best shot size for 410....
It's interesting that you say that, because I have never fired #7.5 or #8 shot through my .410. I've always used #4 or #6. Works great on rabbits, squirrels, and possums. Kind of pushing it for big raccoons, but #4 and #6 still do the job on them, too. I do have some #5, but I haven't used any of it yet.
Are #7.5 and #8 the best shot sizes for .410 because they maintain the best pattern density the farthest? And do the little pellets still retain sufficient energy for humane kills at the maximum range that the pattern is dense enough to still be useable?
Is this a good self defense gun when in 20 gauge?
Pump action would be better, but a break action is better than nothing. It’s reliable at least
Nice
Thanks
Did you export to india sir
No, I live in the US. I have no idea what it would take to export to India, nor do I want to
What is the price and what is its shooting range.
@@KedarRanswal it was under 2 benjies and range depends on what you’re shooting… slugs will go 100 yards +, buckshot maybe 60-70 yards, birdshot 30-45 years maybe…
But it all depends on what the shot is, and the choke, and your skills
I like the super budget friendly survival shotgun how do I get one
Look at a gun shop on online?
Were do you find that ammo > cant find it anywere.
What .410?
Did you use the stock choke that came with the gun (improved modified I believe)
Or did you change out chokes for various types of shot?
Thanks
I only have the one it came with.
Is the trigger guard plastic?
I believe so, yes. I sold it so I can’t check
Wish they’d stop doing that. 🥲 I know it lowers the price point but not generational longevity.
@@johnnottahcal5725 it’s cheap.
@@johnnottahcal5725 yeah I agree too, but to keep the cost of this gun under $200, they do what they must
Price
Usually under $200
Sale price
@@chinglileinak6827 I’ve seen them for under $200 all over the place
Wao I like very much
For under $200 it’s a lot of fun and a good backup or survival shotgun
That first shell got flung so hard, you could've taken out one turkey in front of you, and a second one behind you.
Lol yeah it has a strong ejector!
😂
Come on stevens make a rifled barrel with open sight for this gun.
That would be awesome
just run a cylinder choke and rifled slugs, the stock modified choke is good for basically all bird hunting, could switch to full or extra full for geese.... seems great all-rounder
I got the same gun
It’s great for the money- I think I’m gonna trade it in towards a New England Firearms .410 break action though.
You need show you hitting the target.

Buckshot in a 410….. never seen those shells?
I have tons of .410 buckshot, usually 4-5 pellets but sometimes has more like 12 pellets
4 or 5 pellets of 000 buck is a fairly popular buckshot load for .410. Federal used to make a 9-pellet #4 buckshot load. Not sure if they still do. A company called Gurel has made a 2.5" .410 shell loaded with 9 pellets of #TT buckshot, although I think #TT is technically one of the larger sizes of birdshot rather than an actual buckshot.
Point being: Buckshot rounds for the .410 exist, if you can find them. There's also the option to load your own if you're into that sort of thing.
You mean stevens model 301.
Yes- barrel says stevens, but I believe the overall company name is Savage Stevens- it is on Savages website, and it came in a Stevens box, but instructions said Stevens by savage
@@crankygunreviews savage is made in 🇺🇸 USA. Stevens 301 made in china
Savage stevens made in USA when both names on gun and Savage name alone made in USA. But stevens only is China.
@@tomterry2662 yeah sadly
I bought one. It's a great single shot has choke tubes and improved cyl. So can deer hunt. I bought it so my grand son can deer hunt.
looks like cbc brazil
Could be
I would have to saw off the barrel to get rid of that stupid screw in choke. I absolutely hate those moronic devices.
I sold this to a buddy, he uses it for raccoon dispatching when they’re after his chickens. The chokes are actually nice, you can change the spread of the shot.
😂😂😂
Boring
Yep it’s pretty good at boring holes in stuff 👍
Does it have a steel release lever?
I believe so
@@crankygunreviews Thank you for the reply.
@@smartacus88 no problem- I will double check but I’m pretty sure it’s stamped steel.
The 12 guage version is much better and more versatile
Yeah I know, but it kicks more, I could let anyone shoot this. Plus I reload .410 so I can make some cool rounds
