- In October of 2023, the Nevada County Narrow Gauge unveiled their newly restored former West Side Lumber Company snowplow! This historic piece of snowfighting equipment was built by the logging company in the 1950s, using various freight car parts and a shay locomotive water tank. In 1961, the railroad ceased operations and the plow sat in Tuolumne, California until the 1980s. It was acquired by the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine railroad as a display piece, but was destroyed in a 2017 fire. The NCNG acquired the plow, and the volunteers took on the task of rebuilding it. Their hard work combined with donations matched by the Narrow Gauge Preservation Foundation resulted in the plow shining once again in its former glory!
Before going on display at the old Nevada City depot site, the plow was run through the museum's meadow track for pictures. Pushing the plow was NCNG's #5, the oldest operating narrow gauge engine in North America, and trailing behind was the replica of NCNG caboose #1. In this video you'll enjoy many different angles of the train as it performs run- bys, including scenes in the cab, on the plow itself and even under the train as it passes overhead!

Man, I grew up in Grass Valley and never knew about this beauty. Thanks Guys !!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic.
That is one gnarly looking plow. Odd that it's unidirectional and not a vee but the railroad must have had a reason for it. Enjoyed this much, thanks!
Looking great . what a perfect fun day.
Last time I see a plow like that was in the late 1950s on the Chicago Great Western in Iowa powering snow .
@arthurkallansrud1950 That's so cool; thanks for sharing!
It would be awesome to see that sent to C&TS for a winter run, maybe Glenbrook and NCNG 5 behind?
Yes!!! That would be awesome. Even a doubleheader with the Glenbrook would be a show.
I agree, that would be amazing! For now, the plow has been put on display in Nevada City. I believe there may be potential interest in at least getting Glenbrook and Tahoe together again in the future.
Is it alright if I use your NCNG 5 footage for a private music video I’m making? If not that’s fine
Never Come Never Go RR !
