    During Army infantry training in Hawaii we camped on a wind farm . We were wet and cold but the gentle woosh ,woosh, of the turbines made it a pleasant evening.

      There's another video I saw regarding this. Not all components are recycled. The time and cost is huge. I always wondered if there is a negative impact from providing unnatural resistance to the wind. Nature is wildly complex. The wind went unencumbered until now.

    7MW/year is a meaningless measure. 1MW is 1 million Joules per second.

    This 7 MW turbine produces electricity to the equivelant of 2.330L of oil, EVERY HOUR! So stop whining about the enviromental impact of building it. It does not matter in the scheme of things. It will have paid for itself within 6-18 months, both economically and environmentally! You could literally fill a large swimming pool with the oil needed to generate the same amount of power this thing does in a day. ffs

      No it has 2 MW. One liter of Oil is about 10 kWh, meaning one hour of full power means about 200 liters of oil saved.

      ​@@montiro8999 Correct, the energy content of oil is 10KWh, but a generator is only around 33% thermically effecient ( world average). So to generate 2MWh of *electricity* you would need ~660Liters of oil. I thought the turbine was 7MW my bad... BTW they make 12MW turbines now, saving 4 Tons of oil an hour ;-D to verify my numbers check out "Example of energy conversion efficiency" on wikipedia.

      ​@@montiro8999 i don't quite follow you here. The output is 2MW regardless of self consumption. We dont care how effecient the turbine is because the fuel(, wind,) is free in all regards.

    You Know The More Indentions You Put In A Turbine Or Gaps Then: It's One Or The Other: The Faster It Will Turn From Less WInd: You Should Be Doing This Anyways To Prevent Air Friction By Doing It in Lower Wind Areas!. Yea Both Do It But Only One Way Is Correct Use Both Then Correctly: Do It Correctly!.

    That's crazy that the towers are all rings of concrete. Here where I live they make and install wind farms in the mountains. The towers are all fiberglass, same as the blades. Installation is SO quick compared to what I'm watching. NOT bashing this though. I LOVE watching things like this and learning how thing's are done or done differently.

      I have never seen a wind turbine tower made of fiberglass, but most in America are made of steel. This tower has the lower 90 meters (or so) made of concrete, then the upper sections are made of steel.
      I think that a fiberglass wind turbine tower might crack from the stress of being pulled to the left and right by winds coming from different directions (on different days of the week). While the concrete being pre-stressed, it is not subject to cracking, and the steel is stronger than both in both pulling or pushing stress.
      Concrete is just a lower cost material, that can be used for the lower 1/2 of the tower. Beyond a certain height, the concrete gets to a point where it's weight might crush the tower support if the concrete went to far up the tower. Also the concrete sections are larger diameter than the steel sections, so will interrupt more airflow than the steel tower. The lower rings, I think they said they are 20 meters across.
      Some of the wind towers in America have a elevator inside the tower! Just a one person elevator, with a 750 or 1,000 pound capacity, so some tools and equipment can be brought up in the elevator too.

      @@Kangenpower7 I believe and understand all of your points. Only reason I know these ones are fiberglass is because they manufacture them 30m from my house. I have 5 friends that work there. And another 2 that are Turbine Techs. They go do the maintenance on them.

      @@kennethbyington516 What brand is that? All what I've ever seen are made from steel, except Enercon who was very proud of this type of tower until a few years back. Then Enercon started to make them from steel as well. There are gonna be wooden towers as well in the future as well, they built the first prototype in Denmark already if I am not mistaken.

    Gas turbines are used to level the unbalanced energy supply from the windmills because wind does not blow with the same speed. There is no one solution.

      They do maintenance on these wind turbines, and yes even replace the blades if they detect a problem with them. They have instruments inside the blades that can look for and detect stress in the turbine blades.
      At about 15 - 25 years old, we find that the 150 KW - 750 KW wind turbines (installed about 15 - 25 years ago) are ready for replacement, as the maintenance costs per MW is considerably more than a modern 2.5 MW wind turbine. And the older 750 KW systems did not have a elevator to the top of the 75 meter tall towers.
      The Zond wind turbines cost about $750,000 when they where new in 1995, so pretty low cost back then. Now they need to be replaced, and by up rating the wind turbines, it is really easy to get local approval, as they are just replacing a wind farm with 85 turbines with another wind farm with 50 - 65 wind turbines, but at a much higher output per turbine.
      If you watched a video of the wind turbine blade testing, it is evident that repairs would lead to the question "Will it hold up? For sure, 100% all better now?" And thus the bean counters and lawyers get involved and say, better and safer to replace it than to make the excuse "We thought the repair would be strong enough" and it worked for a few weeks / months before it broke and killed that poor guy driving by on a motorcycle.

      @@sheldon7510 as a Wind Turbine GE Engineer. That is all calculated in and weighed. It makes up for materials and fuels used within 18 months. Especially with the newer 5MW Cypress Wind Turbines being implemented.

      If you short circuit a generator then you're asking for trouble.

      The wind turbine will keep turning as long as there is over about 15 MPH wind speed. Below that speed, it will normally stop. The wind turbines are connected to the grid, and the washing machine to the same grid. The grid has the ability to collect power from any spinning generator, and will not stop any of them when the power demand is to high. Just that the washing machine will get it's power from this spinning wind turbine, or another generator, from someplace!

      The crane operator should have a camera in the nose of the crane, and perhaps another remote transmitting camera on the hook of the crane, so he could really tell what is going on! They also need two hooks, two cables, so they do not start spinning in the wind!

    nowhere in this video is any mention made of the cost of fossil fuels and fossil fuel derivitives (plastics, resins, etc) to mine the concrete , Construct the entire assembly, base, towers , blades and turbines, transport to site and erect. That cost must be huge.

      Larry, I was thinking exactly that and for approximately 20 years of service, also permanent magnets fitted to the generator decrease in magnetic strength over time.
      One major factor causing this dog chasing it's tail effect with our global energy/weather change thing is exponential human population growth...

      @@MartinInAmsterdam A real engineer should know that as in english, most other languages have conflicting definitions of what these words mean and there is no ultimate semantic definition. the important engineering distinction between screws (with or without nuts) and bolts (with or without threads) is that a screw connects parts using 'frictional connection' by only using it's threads and the screwing motion to create a normal force pushing together the two parts causing enough friction between them to restrict movement. whereas bolts use 'form fit' as connection method where the bolt itself takes all the shear forces and surface/flank pressure just like rivets.
      Of course there are idiots, including fellow engineers, who think a machine screw with a nut is called a bolt by most people and therefore can be used as a bolt for form fit connections which usually ends in disaster since the sharp edged threads of the screw creates a material weakness and shearing forces easily destroys the screw since a screw is not meant to take shearing forces or surface/flank pressure at all.

    This may be off topic, but someone might find it interesting.Over unity electric generator. By AMA.
    Segment 1: 1 motor with bar connected to it standing vertically. Circular disc connected to bar that has magnets embedded in it surrounded in high permeability material to focus magnets outward pushing force in an upwards direction from top of disc.
    Segment 2: Hollowed out cylindrical Bar of material horizontally positioned.
    Flat hollowed out ring shaped material with openings around its outer top flat edge.
    Magnets surrounded in high permeability material embedded in these openings.
    Magnets positioned in openings around ring are in at least 1 of 2 configurations either all N magnetic field pushing out or N,S,N,S all around it. Just depends on whether your going for Piston structure or spinning structure explained below & whether you want it to be DC or AC current.
    Place these all along the cylindrical bar connected to it solidly, except at far ends of bar.
    At both ends of bar place ring of material that can be magnetically repelled in specific locations. (magnetically repelled in specific location is in reference to outside of ring area that faces away from center of bar)(Other side of same ring facing in towards center of bar is capable of being magnetically repelled all around) Ring must be connected solidly to bar. points of repulsion on these rings is off set from each other on each end of bar.
    3 Hollow ring structures with small square bars protruding from each. Ring structure has all magnetic repulsion on inside of ring shape & can rap around the main bar so that the bar wont be causing friction on things as it moves back and forth or spins. 1st positioned around far left of bar, 2nd position at center of bar (be sure to leave enough room for magnetic structures to be able to move back and forth without hitting it) & 3rd positioned on far right of bar.
    Tube structure is constructed in two parts that fit together on top of each other length wise over main structure.
    Tube structure has 3 square openings for the bars that the Ring structures that are connected around the main bar keeping it from causing friction on structure, to slide into.
    This tube structure is designed with material that does not block magnetic fields. Perhaps some type of transparent material glass or other.
    At both ends of the tube structure there is a built in circular groove that will house a round disc. The ceiling/floor/left side/& right side of groove has openings for small magnets to be embedded in it, so that the pushing force from magnets is pushing in towards the edge of disc that goes in this spot. There is also 4 openings located on the top, bottom, left & right positions of the open groove. Small magnets are placed in these spots so when round disc is in position these magnetic fields will hit sideways keeping it from generating friction against structure.
    Far Ends of bar has Cap structure that screws over tube halves holding them together. Cap structure also has 4 points on inside top, bottom, left & right that have openings. These openings have small embedded magnets in them that exert there pushing force outwards (sideways) so it will keep disc in position, generating no friction against structure. Cap is made of material like tube so it does not block magnetic fields. (Note: These magnets in groove and cap structure are only needed for piston design. If Disc is directly connected to main bar so as it spins the bar spins, magnets are not needed here).
    The disc has ring around it (ring of material goes around outer edge and folds over front side & backside a small distance) that is repelled by magnetic fields so the 12 small magnets will keep it lined up but it will be able to spin without causing friction on structure. The disc has openings on it's flat side that face inside of tube and magnets surrounded in high permeability material are embedded in this disc.
    The disc has small bar that is connected to it's center that goes all the way to the other end of bar structure through the center of the hollowed out bar and connects to disc on other end. Disc on other end is set up the same but magnets embedded in it are off set in comparison. As first disc spins the magnetic fields will push against specific spot on disc connected directly to bar, pushing bar in other direction, once bar is fully pushed over, further spinning of disc will then align the other sides magnet to push it back.
    Tube structure also has half moon shaped protrusion on inside and on both halves so when tube is connected they line up to make a full ring shape on inside of tube, these half moon shaped protrusions have at least 1 small round opening on it's side in middle of curve that faces away from center of bar. The opening has a small magnet embedded in it so magnetic force is repelling out sideways away from center of bar. The protruding ring is positioned to line up slightly further in towards center of bar then the ring of magnetically repelled material connected directly to bar. This way when bar moves right or left it is magnetically stopped after a short distance.
    Copper coil setup: Copper coils are wound in at least 1 of 2 ways. Either coiled in circles next to each other (Like if you wound coils around a cylindrical bar) or laid out in a row as if wire was on flat table going up then bent to go down & back up until it formed a flat rectangle of wire bending up and down and then the entire structure folded around tube. Copper windings are then lined up perpendicular to magnetic fields on outside of tube. Ends of copper coils are connected into separate construct that will allow electrical current to flow somewhere else.
    Circular construct is built like a stand that goes around the outside of motor segment. Circular construct has flat ring of high permeability (magnetic field shielding) material that has small openings that will allow magnetic fields through specific locations. Top of circular construct has groove to allow the horizontal bar to balance on. Circular construct can also be placed on other end of bar so it is balanced. The motor segment is positioned so the disc connected to the bar that is connected to the motor is lined up so the disc passes under the horizontal bars disc that is at end of horizontal bar. The high permeability material keeps the magnetic fields in disc from hitting into the disc that spins or pushes the horizontal bar until just the right moment when the impact will cause the disc in horizontal bar to spin which will perpetuate the piston motion in the horizontal bar. More horizontal bars of the same design are built and positioned around the motor segment in a circular horizontal fashion all the way around. The bar connected to the motor can be increased in length to desired height (As much as motor can handle) and more of the exact same setup is repeated higher and higher up, maximizing the over unity potential of the construct to ridiculous proportions. :D Current from the horizontal bars is diverted to power the motor as needed and all other current is diverted to power my game console or the world. :) Interesting variation to this design would be to connect the spinning discs on far ends of horizontal bar to main bar that magnets are connected to so the magnets spin instead of getting pistoned back and forth. So long as moving magnetic fields are perpendicular to copper wires it should work. By AMA

      you have no idea what you are talking about, you need couple of days just for the grout work and piles, plus to tie the rebar you need 3-4 days, form work one day, pour the concrete one day than one day to strip the forms and than erection. Erection takes the least time if the weather permits it.

    100 of the best turbines equals to just one nuclear reactor, I think nuclear power is better you can have 4 or 5 1000MW reactors working 24/7

      The problem with a nuclear reactor is nobody really wants one in their back yard. Also I have never heard of a nuclear reactor coming in under budget or on the scheduled date to start operation. The problem with that is the $5 Billion they already spent needs to be paid back as soon as possible, and when you delay that start date by a couple of weeks, the payback time is extended, and there is nothing to pay the loan payments for that additional 2 weeks when the station is late at start up. And most nuclear power plants sit for a couple of years before they actually start running to produce power. So that $7 Billion borrowed to build the plant is needing to pay $700 Million a year in construction loan costs. And that is a substantial additional cost added to the budget to start the nuclear power plant.
      While a wind turbine power plant, you can start the turbines within a week of finishing each turbine, and start generating power even before the 15th wind turbine has been installed! So payback sometimes starts even before the project has paid for all of the wind turbines, and borrowed all of the money they will need to complete the project! And many are finished within a few weeks of the construction schedule, and within a couple million of the cost estimate.
      Natural gas power plants still come in at a few weeks to a few months over the scheduled timetable, while most come in at a few million over the budget, and perhaps run into a problem, like the 36" pipeline going to the plant might cost $35 million more than they estimated, or some other problem that happens.
      And remember that $250 Million dollar natural gas power plant needs to pay around $25 million a year in interest on the loans they take out for construction, or about $1 Million for every 2 weeks they are late. !

      @@igort5418 One of the budget elements that are not included are fuel reprocessing and site decontamination costs. For example Britain's Sellafield clean-up plant may take more than 100 years to decontaminate and cost up to £162 billion (UK Gov estimates).     instead of stopping the whole process and shifting the face towards the wind direction, why don't the blades turn and adjust themselves just like ships.less space can be utilized,less moters to be mounted less weight and at the last less cost

    This is a remarkable invention but nobody ever considered the downside to them, just about everything about them is a downside. They cost more than they will ever produce and are extremely harmful to the environment. Look into any area where they are used on land or at sea and talk to the people who live around them. Look at what mining the materials does to the environment, the amount of land disturbed to erect them, of Ocean floors disturbed to place them offshore, the Whales and Dolphins being killed while installing them, the migrant birds being killed when they are operational, and the blades that are supposed to last 20 years failing in as little as two years. The blades alone have graveyards stacked high with failed blades that nobody knows what to do with because they are not recyclable. Land or sea they are a threat to the environment and a tremendous waste of money.

      There are many wind turbines over 25 years old that still run fine. That is well over 50,000 hours of run time, and about time to replace anything with that many hours on it. Like driving your car for some 2,500,000 miles. Ready to replace it?
      Most of the Zond wind turbines are rated at 750,000 watts and cost about $750,000 to install back in the 90's. At 25 years old they deserve to be retired. And the cost to maintain a 25 year old turbine is a lot more expensive than a new 2.5 MW model, the new ones even have a small elevator to take the maintenance to the top! And the percentage of run time is higher with the modern wind turbines that are taller, with much longer blades. So they can run at 12 MPH, instead of the 16 MPH cut in speed of the Zond units.

      You're FOS. Writing in the International Journal of Sustainable Manufacturing, they conclude that a wind turbine will achieve energy payback within five to eight months of being brought online.

    What do they produce when there is no wind??? What do they product without subsidies? What provides the power when there is no wind?

      1. Of course the wind turbines are located where is almost always enough wind, many of them in northern Germany near the coast. In case of strong wind, there can be even too much wind energy. 2. Germany still has nuclear and coal-fired powerplants. At the moment, the government is hurrying to build new powerlines from north to south to get rid of the nuclear power plants.

      So, from what I've been learning so far about wind turbines is that they are (GENERALLY) tall enough to get atleast some sort of breeze that helps move the blades. Also there are different types of wind turbines! So ones that are on water (offshore) are able to get more wind because of their location. Same with turbines placed on planes (as seen in the video). They are able to get more wind because there aren't many barriers preventing wind from getting to them. Also, some wind turbines may have batteries to store energy in when there isn't much being produced! So any excess energy that isn't being sent to the places they are providing energy for, is being stored in the battery for moments of "inactivity," if you will? Once again, I'm not 100% positive if all turbines have batteries, because some are connected directly to the power grid, but a fair amount do just because if convenience! Solar panels have the same option to have batteries in case there are cloudy periods of time or snow.

      They produce technical Scenery and physical barriers for birds unaware .... when there’s no wind they defer to solar unless it’s cloudy then they depend on the other sources, if you are blessed it’s Hydro otherwise more likely a thermal generation system, again geothermal if blessed, gas and coal if not ...
