"Be silent for the most part, or, if you speak, say only what is necessary and in a few words." - Marcus Aurelius
"information could be correct, but it's lacking the context needed for it to be successful." That was a brilliant statement Ryan. Many people don't like unsolicited advice or just don't know your true intentions, better to know someone well and judge whether to give them input based on that relationship.
Absolutely! Your point about the importance of context in communication is spot on. It's crucial to consider the nature of your relationship with someone and their receptiveness to advice before offering it. Building understanding and respect in our interactions is key.
So many great moments in this interview... Gervais' wife's idea of not teaching children that life is Fair, since it isn't, is really a valuable moment.. So many insightful moments in this discussion from both
The second arrow analogy is so relevant, very philosophical psychology, which i think is so important for providing the foundation for our psychology as humans. love that. Thank you both!
I'm one minute in. How long until my brain stops telling me this man is Tom Cruise?
For real👍🏼
Haha😂

😮 thanks for putting that in head 😅😅
😂
Omg this is exactly the topic I’ve been thinking about in my mind. It’s hard to balance doing things for yourself and doing things for an audience
Me too! balancing what you love with others' expectations is really tough. It can feel like walking on a tightrope sometimes.
23:00 is such a philosophical marvel to watch coz Ryan being the Stoic that he is, is just shooting straight at the point with minimal deconstruction. While Dr. Gervais is all about getting deep into the guts of this idea of “All Art has its audience”.
Hopefully I captured that right.
“It's what you learn after you know it all that counts.”
- John Wooden
We appreciate your insights. You'll always have our support.
We're all gonna make it brahs
Love your enthusiasm brah
Definitely lots of insight to apply to life. Please keep uploading these amazing episodes!
Great conversation! Thank you for sharing us this gem.
Love this conversation!
On the topic of Robert and the laws of power. Knowledge isn’t inherently “good or evil” it just is and how you use it determines its morality. When I was a teen I read The Prince and that was foundational for me to be able to see people. That and the art of war set a foundation for understanding the battle internally and externally with power and how to fight it. I’ve built a reading list for my daughter as she ages she’s 2 now so I’m gonna start reading these books to her.
Really good stuff here fellas, thanks for sharing 👍🏽

I'm glad Ryan sticks to the value of justice even if it is oddly controversial hah.
Yupp!
Great meditation to start the day- Akerlof & Schiller have a great work on this in their book Animal Spirits. Some interesting discoveries in the book like about when the financial services industry used to name things like "Maiden Lane" for the branding of it. I try to look at the individual parts of something and try to figure out it's gestalt to identify what a use value is of everything that I choose to bring into my oikos.
Curious what they said about branding like “Maiden Lane”. Why are so many hedge funds named after bodies of water? All the Greek names (I assume those are to just appear learned and timeless).
Thanks
#MichaelGervais heard and experienced here as not authentic. Carry on #Stoicism #RyanHoliday, 2024!
Stoic philosophy reminds me of Star Trek Vulcan teachings.
59:01 concept of fairness, and should we let the fact that we are in control if we act according to justice or not but we're not in control if other people act that way too, should we let that hold us back?
never, hold yourself to the standard you believe to be objectively right using deductive reasoning
If tomorrow cruise dies in middle of the movie schedule, we now know who to hire
Anne Frank thought that someone may find her diary, so it was for herself, but she was also purposefully documenting what was going on for history.
Bridled emotions 48:37
Loved the conversation, but do have feedback on Ryan interjecting himself every other sentence to say "yeah" or something like that.
Stoned
Dr G and , Seattle Seahawks , Pete Carroll , Compete to Win
Is he Tom Cruise's brother?
every 3sec to yeah, sure is really to much here
I gave this a like but I hope you don't care.
He’s posting on social, he cares
I can’t get what the person being interviewed has to say because he gets interrupted all the time.
These guys are stoned
These interviews are way too long...
Then don’t watch them?
I don't@@LothlorBass
that means you will get a lot from it
How bout guest your audience actually knows
How bout go outside your comfort.
I would think his audience would like being exposed to new ideas from a variety of interesting/thoughtful people. 🤪
Nobody is forcing you to watch!
Coaches, athletes and other people in sports have known and followed Gervais for many years. Ryan's books are in every pro sport locker room, as mentioned by the guest.
He's a World Leading Performance Psychologist. We don't need to know him to find out what information he has that we can apply in our own lives.
