Iosif Ivanovici (1845-1902)
Otherwise known as Josef/Ion/Jovan Ivanovici, the composer was born in 1845 in Timisoara, Romania. He first learned to play the flute given to him as a child by a sympathetic old man. His music is very much is the style of Johann Strauss and his contemporaries, but is strongly influenced by Romania's own musical traditions, which makes it refreshingly different. In 1889, Ivanovici won the coveted march prize to mark the World Exhibition in Paris, out of 116 entries.
Although today Ivanovici is chiefly remembered for his waltz "Waves of the Danube" ("Donauwellen" in German, "Flots du Danube", in French), in his lifetime he composed over 300 works (many of them lost today). Other notable compositions are Carol I March, dedicated to King Carol of Romania, "Carmen Sylva" waltz, dedicated to Queen Elisabeth of Romania, and "Romanian heart" waltz op 51 ("Inimă română" in Romanian , "Cordialité roumaine" in French).

This is a wonderful arrangement for the accordion and masterfully played! I have recently become a big fan of Ion Ivanovici, and he is a bit of a hidden talent and musical genius. I greatly encourage anybody who hears his music and especially reads this comment, to look into some of his other pieces which are available to listen to online. A large portion of his discography is lost to time, but some of his waltzes such as Bavarian Landler, Carmen Sylva, Visuri de Aur, Suspinul, Wild Flowers, Waltz from Days Gone By and a few others can still be listened to and enjoyed online. He was born in what is now Timișoara and lived the majority of his life in Galați. “While some may dispute his nationality today, he is by all historical standards a Romanian composer of Serbian origin.” -I got this from Wikipedia
But his great grandson Andrei Ivanovitch( who was born in Romania, studied at the Leningrad conservatory) is a famous pianist and is probably the best interpreter of Russian music here in Europe. Tbh the name Ivanovici has certainly Russian roots so we may both be somewhat right ;)
