- Built in 1951 for the mental health facility on what was called Dunbar Farm, the structures were originally used as housing for Eastern State employees - primarily nurses and orderlies. The land became property of the College of William & Mary, and in the mid-1960s was used as student housing. In September 1962, between 40-50 men were housed in a “team room” in the attic of Old Dominion Hall. The nurse and orderly quarters were abandoned by the hospital about 1965. 86 men resided on the first floor of building 42 (later named Hughes Hall) at what was then called James Blair Terrance, since it was adjacent to Williamsburg-James City County James Blair High School. The other building (named Munford Hall),“was used for married couples (graduate students and law students mostly) and single and married members of the faculty.” Use of the two halls, as housing or storage, was continued until 2006 when they were vacated “when the buildings were about to fail inspection.
