The goblets associated with the Coronation Banquet went to the Chief Butler. I descend from the Payne’s who were heirs of Ralph Butler in 1333. This record names Nicholas Payne heir, and his son, John PAYNE was Pincerna Regis till his death in 1402. New fan BTW. Just found this video!

I wish I had time to relate the story behind the Ellesmere CHAUCER passing from the family to the DRURY’s in 1568, that connection back to John ‘Pincerna’ who of course had purchased wine from the Chaucer’s and was succeeded by Chaucer’s son, Thomas. Chaucer and the Duke both married daughters of PAYN de ROET- and I now have reason to believe all of this was no coincidence as I have just connected John Payn’s family with the better known PAYNELS in Leicestershire! Proving that all of those medieval Norman “PAGANS” (Payne in all its forms in Latin is PAGANUS) running around were in many cases of the same early PAYNEL family. I hope to get back to the UK for an extended visit with renewed focus on Ireland with this new knowledge as that is where I will find my ancestor. Having recently taken an early retirement I now have the time if I wish. I now seem to know a person with some experience in this area! I have not read the comments be will certainly make time to do so.

We were always told that Butler referred to the french Bottelier , server of wine (sorry if the spelling is wrong ) My grandfather Thomas Butler was born in 1900 on the estate of Castle Fogarty , Ballycahill Tipperary , My grandmothers family hailed from Wexford but settled in Shellumsrath Kilkenny .. both families had worked at Norelands and Mount Juliet ... I have a lovely old photo of my great uncle Tom Murphy with The Tetrarch ... a very well known race horse owned by Major McCalmont ... . A fascinating history thanks for sharing

The Butler family name goes back to Theobald Fitzwalter, an Anglo Norman who arrived in Ireland in the 12th century. He was awarded the hereditary office of 'Chief Butler' of Ireland' or "Boteillier". The French word "Boutillier" comes from "Boutellier" (different spelling) which means, someone in charge of the wine cellar. I would think they are connected but I would have to leave this to the experts but would love to know more. Lovely to mee you. Oh and Mount Juliet Estate is simply beautiful.

Before lockdown , I was due to visit Mount Juliet and Norelands stud .. and also Tipperary but all had to be cancelled due to the UK travel restrictions , Hopefully next year things will be different and I can visit ... I was invited by someone at The Norelands Stud to a personal tour and I had also wanted to give them a large framed copy of The Tetrarch with my Great Uncle Tom Murphy (the horse is buried there ) for their stables ... I also wanted to show them a copy of my grandparents marriage cert as my grandmother Ellen Murphy gave her current address as Norelands , so she must have been working there at the time ... There has always been a strong connection with equines within our family .. Last year I posted the old photo of my Great Uncle Thomas Murphy on a facebook page Kilkenny Down Memory Lane I think it was and a distant relative got in touch with me .. so that was really lovely ... when Great Uncle Tom was in his seventies he emigrated to Canada ... he died there in 2004 aged 104 !!! and she sent me the pics of him on his 100th birthday .. he looked so well ! and had hardly changed since I last saw him in the late 1970.s ... I do feel it is important to keep Irish history alive .. Our Butler surname was always impressed upon us as being a name to be proud of ... Very Best Regards Wendy

Richard Butler is my 5th great grandfather. He was killed by Indians in Ohio.
