  • After doing the work to my 400 engine to put it back to Duraspark ignition and putting a Holley carburetor on it, did it help it or hurt it? Lets find out!

Very Impressive! I know nothing about the 400 engine. Gonna do a little research tonight for fun. Love the truck! Thanks for sharing. Hope to see you soon.

The 400 is a square engine. Four inch bore and four inch stroke. It actually has a longer stroke than a 460 with it's 3.85" stroke. But what hurt the 400 was its low compression height pistons, lazy distributor timing, and some got the retarded timing sets. As far as I know all cars got the retarded timing sets, the trucks wasn't supposed to have gotten them but I have seen them in the trucks before so I'll just say its hit and miss on them in the trucks. But retarding the camshaft 8 degrees hurts them a lot.

I had a 351 M and never had an issue with running too hot either .Guess the engineers did a good job with the design of the dry manifold.

I had a 351M in a 1979 Bronco. It wasn't a powerhouse by any means but it had to be one of the toughest engines I've ever owned!

I like that Ford made those so they can be made into something better than the way the factory made them run in the smog days. Better pistons with more compression and better qench, a set of 4v Cleveland heads(or aftermarket aluminum), a decent intake and more modern cam and you got something. Add a stroker crank for even more fun.😎👍

I have a set of 351C closed chamber 4V heads I always wanted to put on it but to get it to work you have to buy those adapter plates to bolt on the head so you can run a 351C 4V intake and then you have the problem of finding exhaust that would work with the 4V heads in a 4x4 truck. That's why I never pursued doing that although I always wanted to try it.

Get a make your own headers kit and the exhaust flanges and make them fit. You'll need a welder to pull it off though. That would be a very cool video series.😎👍

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 I just don't care for using the adapters so you can run the 351C 4V intake on it. I would have thought that after all these years someone would have offered an intake for those heads on a 400. If they ever did I'm not aware of it.

If you have the welder to make the headers, a custom intake doesn't have to be made out of aluminum, it will work if it's made out of steel.🤷 That would be an even better video series. It doesn't necessarily need to be a dual plane just make sure your design is with long runners for higher torque.😎👍

One of my favorite motors. They do have the power. Great video thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your kind words. The 400 is a good motor but unfortunately it was also a victim of it's time.

One comment on those blue guages. Blue light makes your eyes dilate, thus reducing your night vision. Red does not, hence why you see a red light on in a helicopter during nighttime operation.

I had a Pontiac in 85 or 86 that had red lighted gauges. I just thought it was a cool factor thing. Thanks for sharing that info.

Yup I loved mine but i really love my 429 in my 79 4by shorty. Yes I got a throttle body efi. I like the efi for what I can do with electric fans, etc. I like messen with electronics. My toy.

Oh no doubt the 385 series is a better engine. I'm dropping a 460 in my 78 4x4 short wheel base. When it comes to fans I always go mechanical. They've always cooled better for me.

@@brentbeiler7051 Mine still had the original radiator on it and it didn't have air conditioning so I'd say mine was just a three core radiator.

What holley carb did you use

    • @BlackLabGarage
      @BlackLabGarage  4 месяца назад

It was an old Holley Economaster 350 cfm two barrel I found in the bottom of a tote of water. It's the carb that I boiled in pine-sol in another video. I have another 400 that I run a Holley 500cfm two barrel on and it runs great with it also.
