on the conversation about why "damages" must be paid for a child born out of wedlock - my 2 cents is, we come from a gender-conscious society where gender-roles united us more than they divide us - Intlawulo is not a punishment but us acknowledging the biological differences between men and women, and that women bare brunt of the physical and emotional price for bringing another into the world.
Our forebearers had measures of control for they were wise and knew the developmental stages of the human body(both male and female), they also had measures in place for reacting to changes in the "norm"....Abba is correct in saying these measures were put in place for an apparent problem. The measures did not do away with the problem but were for the sake of peace for all those invloved. Ilobolo was never meant to stand as a form of payment, it was many things but that.
"They must learn to let go" simple but powerful!
Thank you for convo, these are conversations that we should have at family gatherings. You touched on going to the mountains or open fields to pray and this has become a normal practice for a lot of people and we forget about the energies or vibrations.

My late grandmother has been taking me on excursions showing me our hidden greatness, the countless megaliths that are now hidden by flora (not sure if it was intentional or not) but we are an amazing people stripped of our sense of identity, and its about time we bring it to the light. Interesting topic indeed......I have a daughter out of wedlock and the damages got negotiated before she was born coz I was advised by my father dat we have to do so to show that we accept the damages I created by impregnating her mother....my confusion then started after her birth I was advised that the child has to keep her mother's surname until I bring the ancestors together through lobola and therefore when her mother takes my ancestors surname the kid will do so too.........What is de purpose of paying damages for a child,is it not for the child to be able to use his/her father's surname?

The damages are for the family. By doing that, bangcolisa isithunzi sakini. So, in doing so, they acknowledged the fact that they have done wrong because the guy decided to sleep with you out of wedlock.
So after the child is born, then from there, they need to pay lobola for the kid. So the child can take the father's surname and be introduced to the fathers ancestors.

I don't agree with the single mother narrative. Most of my mother's friends and my mom included were single mothers and raised very up standing citizens. My mom single handedly raised 3 girls and all 3 of us grew up to achieve great things. My husband was also raised by a single mother and he's the greatest husband. On the other hand I've got friends who grew up with both parents and they got so messed up, it is still hard for me to believe that I once envied them for living in a household of both parents.

Disagree with the fact that your father did not marry your mother, therefore you grew up in your mother's house and protected by them. When you have grown up you must then pay damages for yourself, so that you can connect with your father's ancestors? That does not sound rights. Your father's family must be the one taking the initiative to connect you with their ancestors not you.
Imagine paying damages of another man ,man. 😶😑
