The mysterious case of the drug-smuggling fishermen - BBC News

  • In 2011, a group of men from the Isle of Wight were given a combined 104-year prison sentence for masterminding a £53m drug smuggling operation. Does new evidence suggest they were innocent? A new lawyer, Emily Bolton, is working on their case and believes that may be the case.
She founded the Innocence Project New Orleans in the US, which has so far freed 25 prisoners, and has recently set up a new charity in the UK - the Centre for Criminal Appeals - to specialise in miscarriage of justice investigations.

Because the austerity plan has started to have a negative effect on their Learned Worshipfulness's' budget.
As pursuing the more successful miscreants, who can afford the services of competent council, is a long. expensive process, their Learned Worshipfulness's consider it uneconomical.
It's all about priorities, and while Dollar remains Akbar, everything else is academic.

No idea if these men are guilty or innocent. Their behaviour DOES seem suspicious, but circumstantial evidence should NEVER be the sole basis for a conviction, let alone of this magnitude.
But one indisputable fact DOES stand out, and that's the despicable practice of police doctoring statements retrospectively to strengthen their case. Police need to be reminded, in the strongest possible legal terms, that their duty is not to get convictions, but to ensure the safe, smooth running of society. Rewriting reality to "punish" those who have not yet been convicted of a crime is utterly unacceptable.

This is why I don't like the Police or the CPS. They are only interested in getting a conviction and they twist statements and evidence to get you convicted whether you are innocent or not. If they were in possesion of the drugs then they are guilty but they were never found with any drugs so it should of been a not guilty case. The CPS prosecuter obviously persuaded the jury enough for them to find them guilty, poor blokes.

This is a case of someone having to be punished, and people on the island (Isle of Wight) have a little bit grudge against Jamie Green so a person has give information saying they could see Jamie's boat 2mile of the back chucking bags over the side of the boat... I actually no myself that Jamie's crab pots were no where near this area and to be able to say you can see the difference between black pots and black bags being pushed over the side of the boat is no real possible.
Also I no myself that Jamie is the last person who is going to be near anyone or anything drug related, I have worked with Jamie and lived with him and from my time I can say he was the last person who would be involved with this, Jamie had only bought a new boat for his fishing business, so how would he manage to pay for 50mill for this.... I generally don't think its possible to see the pots from that far away and I am saying this because I have been on both the cliff top on the island and also fished at the back of the island.
    FREE THEM ALL!!!!
    R. I. P MRS GREEN
Also Jamie's family does not deserve any of these problems. They are all the best of people 🙏

The skipper was either guilty or plain stupid ? Probably both, would any serious professional not only set off on a one off fishing trip, off his normal route, in poor weather, take a complete novice to boot and then criss cross a bloody huge containership. Unfortunately the few facts that are available have easily proven otherwise. By the time this documentary was filmed they had served 9 years, yet the wife can barely keep a straight face. Finally how come no other fishing crew spoke up for them, in fact the buzz locally was and is they were being watched on more than one occasion.

From my understanding of this (assuming none of the fisherman were found in possession) they were convicted entirely on circumstantial evidence; itself containing several defects. Even if they were in that area for a purpose related to the drugs, it's hard to see how there was enough evidence to convict them all..

Unless the police planted the evidence after failing to catch them during a previous operation. Which would have lead to zero doubts of their guilt. There could have been another vessel from a different port involved in the hours after the men were there. Once their vessel left that cove, the police also left. That's not to say I believe with 110 certainty they're innocent either. Too much evidence is circumstantial. Who's buoy was it? Why were the police handling the buoy without gloves on? By touching the buoy directly, they've contaminated the evidence. If the men and vessel were under surveillance, why is there no infrared video of them retrieving and dropping off the bundles? Was there a skiff on the fishing vessel they could have used to retrieve the bags from the channel? Do they have evidence showing the men buying more line? New line could easily be accounted for. The line could have been analysed to prove any line found on the vessel is a direct chemical match to the line found tied to the bags of drugs. Cuts on the line can be traced to the remaining line. An empty spool perhaps. The line used was brand new. Why did they deposit the drug in a highly visible location with bright white line? Why did the police not go after the items seen being tossed overboard right away? Why was a member of the public the first to alert authorities to the buoy and bags? Divers could have been dropped by a helicopter to investigate what the officers on land saw before day break. Infrared imagining would have proven beyond a reasonable doubt one way or another. This is technology any night time operation utilizes. Where are the videos? Why were the police on the cliffs not recording? Their cameras would have zoomed in on the lite up fishing vessel. Those on deck could have been spotted throwing the bags overboard. Were the men tipped off to the operation? Thus a hasty decision to drop the bags off where they could be retrieved? How did the police know to be in that exact location to witness items being thrown overboard? Did the vessels historical data show the same or similar path? And where is the money trail? If these men had done this in the past, there must be financial evidence or a hoard of cash somewhere? Were lobsters and fish being sold to one or more individuals or businesses for insane prices to hide their activities? Did their recorded catch line up with their income and lifestyle?
These are all questions the court must account for in order to provide a fair ruling on each individual case. I find it difficult to believe not one aboard either vessel has cracked.
      Cheers!

What frightens me is that the police can convict you with such weak evidence. One boat Sails past another boat then a member of the public finds bales of Coke on the shoreline. Surely you need something more concrete than that. And surely if they were actually doing an investigation they would have something more certain.

the dense lawyer talking about how the cocaine wasn't in watertight bags because some if it was damp and therefore it had to have leaked somewhere on the boat she should be the last person to assume so many variables. wow really there can be many reasons why it was damp from humidity to temperature change to the freshness of the cocaine. was it tested for salt water presence?
