I never write anything on social media, but this time I just have to. Being a portuguese who lived 3 years in Aberystwyth, who watched live in the Arms Park Wales beating England 10-9 in 1992, I just have to say this: while working with my tractor on the farm with my headphones on, listening to your (greatest) ramble about last night's match, I had to stop what I was doing to clear the tears in my eyes. Thank you so much for all you for the greatest sport in the world. Portugal, Romania, Georgia, Chile, Uruguay, Spain, etc... are not minor teams. Just give them a chance, support them (yes, I'm talking to you, World FUC**ng Rugby).
My grandpa used to play rugby for Académica de Coimbra when he was young. He started like many of his generation (born in 1934) - by being scouted from another sport (track and field, in his case). I feel lucky to have always known about Portuguese rugby! My grandpa is 88 today and quite happy to see us in the world cup.

@@Nuj-rx8wk "Latin" does not stand for race/ethnicity nor [strictly] for geography. As a portuguese myself, this is the best video i've ever seen about our rugby national team. Well done, Portugal for the win amazing..after watching the match, Portugal was more hungry for the win and they were a much better team on the day..👏👏👏🫡
It seems to me that Portugal simply put in the hard work. They developed the game in their schools, and developed their talent from a young age. Then they got the games broadcast on their mainstream TV and built a fanbase. As well as made it possible for their athletes to earn a living playing the sport. And they have been doing this for many years now. Thus the results are starting to show. But of course they have a LONG way to go. They have not yet developed to the level of a Georgia or Japan yet. But they are at least on rhe right track.
From an irish guy i know in more recent times we are a very tough team but for many years we were the laughing stock of the North for the majority of the 20th Century we were ass then finally 21st century we made the breakthrough and it's lead to 3 Grandslams and 2 Championships in just 15 years when we previously went 61 years without winning a Grandslam point being you develop the grassroots and work really hard within 20 years you can go from being trash to world beaters
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 True.....you have to put the hard work in. There are no short cuts or you can't buy your way in. Doing the development work is the only way to produce actual tangible results.
Rugby is one of those games where "overnight success" follows generations of dedicated hard work and learning. The Portuguese have the Passion and the Persistence.
Sorry to burst the bubble but I'm Portuguese and I don't think I've ever seen a rugby match being broadcasted on "mainstream" TV, only on dedicated sports channel, and even then, not much. And after 2 months here we are: 2 losses against Wales and Australia for 20 points, one draw against Georgia and a win against Fiji... Not bad at all 🙂
Hi Portuguese Born here,. you did an excellent job!!!! i moved to Britain 20 years ago . my city in Portugal was quite good during the 90's , Cascais. one of my childhood friends played for them and the National Team!! Really good documentary !!!! All the Best!!
Back in 2010 I went on exchange to Lisbon from Copenhagen. So I came from a tiny rugby nation (Denmark) to a more established one. I played for Tecnico in Olaias for 7 months. Such dedicated players and young. At 25 I was one of the oldest. Being the only foreigner in the club it was difficult but overall great guys but if you didnt put in the effort then you were out. It was funny to see these rugby players being so attached to football aswell. Strange combination. I remember Raffaele Storti, a young boy at this time. Even back then he had a great understanding of the game.
Yeah in Portugal, even if you play another sport, most likely you're super into football as well. I played basketball until I finished school and almost everyone in the 2 teams I played for were massive football fans as well, including myself😂
That was beautiful man. I don't follow rugby (I don't follow any sport actually) but throughout the entire video your love for Rugby just shines trough. The excitement in your voice for good, interesting players regardless of their origin is palpable. A pure love for a sport that is not that common. Cheers :)
Just saw this video as we run up to our second and "biggest" game of the RWC against Georgia. Those who saw this video first and then saw the game against Wales were not oversold, fantastic game.
Orgulho 🐺💪
I'm surprised you hardly mentionned Portugal's special relationship with France. Not only the coach is french but quite a lot of the players are either french with a portugese heritage, or portuguese playing in france. Pinto was u20 World Champion with France. Besides there is a huge portuguese diaspora on France so os lobos may have almost a home croawd during the WC. It's funny you compared Marques to Parra since it was at one point rumored that Parra who was elligible with the new laws was going to play for Portugal. I don't think it was ever actually going to happen but it could have. Anyway best of luck to os lobos and congrats to lasgisquet
In football, Robert Pires, Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann have Portuguese heritage. I believe they could have played in the Portuguese national team if they wanted. On the other hand, Raphael Guerreiro, Adrien Silva and Anthony Lopes could have played for France.
He probably only looked at performances history at international level without being interested into players respective clubs. Also probably only the French (and Belgians & Swiss) and the Portuguese know that Portuguese are quite a fair now assimilated constituant of the French population. The Anglo-Saxons are usually quite ignorant of contemporary civilisational and cultural "daily life" POPULAR facts regarding other populations. They lie in a (linguistic) bubble and expect other people to be interested and attracted to their bubble, not the other way round. I mean daily life POPULAR culture not the classic stuff (like gastronomy, painters, philosophers, etc) that gets the attention of savvy anglo-saxons.
Portugal have been "raising" a rugby team ( not only in rugby, but in other sports, like handball,Volleyball, judo,Track and field, Football and Footsal are what all the World knows.) for many years now, and with Top level results, like olympic Champions, world Champions.... Very Patient, always learning with defeat, and also always looking into the future. Very humble, very Hard Working Athletes and a great Managing from the lower tiers to the top level. Great Achievement by Portugal. They have some Top World Level Athletes. Congratulations Portugal,"you" deserve it for so many years of sweat, tears and Very Hard Work. All the best for you team.
Perfect Portuguese accent! Great overview and, as a Portuguese rugby lover, congrats for the historical research and thanks for the good vibes sent for all the "Lobos". Looking forward to fly with and against the Fijians.
Mate, what a great story. Loving these tier 2 round ups / backstories .. If world rugby had any clue they would put u on the books to compile these series... Or at the very least purchase content from you.. Funny, passionate and attention to detail.. 5 stars for squidge.. Keep em coming..
Fair play Squidge, how right you were, what an entertaining team and what a victory over Fiji last night. World Rugby, please, please, please, you have to help give teams like Portugal the opportunity to play against the big teams on a more regular basis and to earn some real income to fund the further development of the game in their country. I'm an Irish fan and obviously excited about our QF versus New Zealand but watching how Portugal has played has nearly been as pleasurable as seeing how Ireland has performed. Fantastic stuff Os Lobos!!
As a Portuguese I'm really happy you made this video cause I had no idea about the history of our rugby team. And I will now be paying attention to our team's performance in the upcoming World Cup. P.S. I understand some stuff can be difficult to pronounce so I'd advise including subtitles for teams and players names :)
Great, great video! Obrigado! Just one (light) remark: the team's nickname is "Os Lobos" (Portuguese) not "Los Lobos" (Spanish). The players' names are always tough to pronounce when we don't get exposure. Imagining having to pronounce the names of Bok team without exposure... It would be carnage!! One piece of trivia, during the 2007 world cup preparation they spent some time at an army programme retreat to prepare them mentally and physycally for some of the games and as mentioned some players had some litigations with the companies they were working as the companies did not want to let them go to the RWC and the Federation had to intervene. The backs is where our strength is, we lack the muscle and expertise on our forwards and Portugal qualified against a very weak and suprising implosion of the USA's team especially when they will host the RWC in a few years time. It would be interesting to analyse what is happening with the Eagles. Once again great content!!!
Your videos are crazy good! I'm so glad World Rugby saw your talent and you all managed to come to an agreement over use of their footage! Look at all the quality content Rugby would be missing out on!!
Man, that vídeo moved me. As portuguese i could feel that you really went to the core of portuguese soul to describe how we overcome the challenges, with heart and courage. We are fighters 😉 Congrats bro, you got a new fan 🤘👍😎

I love how Squidge does this! I am now so inspired by Portugal! He tells a story (just like with Uruguay) that makes you want to root for them win or lose. Beautiful! I hope to see Os Lobos surprise us all
They are very fun to watch … quick & dynamic for sure. 👍🏻
After watching this pool stage, I don’t know why random people on the side of the street sell drugs when you could sell clips of Portugal playing rugby
Storti indeed. He had a great world cup. 3 points for Portugal with a draw v Georgia and a win v Fiji. Wonderful stuff
And after 2 months here we are: 2 losses against Wales and Australia for 20 points, one draw against Georgia and a win against Fiji...
Not bad at all 🙂
This video aged so well...
Hi Portuguese Born here,. you did an excellent job!!!! i moved to Britain 20 years ago . my city in Portugal was quite good during the 90's , Cascais. one of my childhood friends played for them and the National Team!! Really good documentary !!!! All the Best!!
Estoril here🙋♂️ Regards

Congratulations for tonight.. what a great result!!! ll🇵🇹 🇵🇹 🇵🇹 🇵🇹

Técnico 💙🤍🖤
That was beautiful man. I don't follow rugby (I don't follow any sport actually) but throughout the entire video your love for Rugby just shines trough. The excitement in your voice for good, interesting players regardless of their origin is palpable. A pure love for a sport that is not that common.
Cheers :)
Just saw this video as we run up to our second and "biggest" game of the RWC against Georgia.
Those who saw this video first and then saw the game against Wales were not oversold, fantastic game.
Georgia and Fiji, you saw these huge games coming !
Man...I played in Direito in Lisbon when I was.a kid in the early 90. It was very cool to see your video!!
Orgulho 🐺💪
When you hear a Portuguese scream "contra os canhões marchar" with that intensity, you know you ain't having an easy time.
Just watched this a day after their world cup game against Fiji. They are indeed now one of my favourite teams 😁
Thank you very much. Really good edit and storytelling. Obrigado
This video aged like fine wine. You did well marking Fiji v. Portugal in your calendar.
As a portuguese rugby fan, I'm honoured by this video. Thank you, mate!
Enjoy the celebrations tonight 🍾 🍾
@@gwh3013 you should make an analysis of the game ahahahah
Brilliant as always Squidge!! Love this series, thanks educating us on all these amazing teams/players ahead of the World Cup!!
This happens in soccer too. Portuguese playing for France or vice versa
@@zombievikinggaming4258 yes still football being a major sport in both countries, it's a different situation
@@zombievikinggaming4258 hum not really vice versa, i dont know any french player with portuguese descent playing in our national team
And we have an 11 million population , and one of the most aged one too… and we still have good results in many sports
Perfect Portuguese accent!
Great overview and, as a Portuguese rugby lover, congrats for the historical research and thanks for the good vibes sent for all the "Lobos".
Looking forward to fly with and against the Fijians.
This reminds why i love your videos vamos portugual
These vids are honestly gold. Pure gold. Thx Squidge mate
Thank you so much for the content from a Portuguese. It sure helps to grow the sport and audience in Portugal !
1:00 fills my portuguese heart with patriotism
Was anyone else expexting that the coach retiring to become an insurance salesman was another Dupont-level segue into the Squarespace bit?
Mate, what a great story.
Loving these tier 2 round ups / backstories ..
If world rugby had any clue they would put u on the books to compile these series...
Or at the very least purchase content from you..
Funny, passionate and attention to detail..
5 stars for squidge..
Keep em coming..
Totally agree! This on the build up to the RWC is getting me hyped for teams I don't know much about. Just brilliant style.
Thank you for a very nice preview of my country's team!
That fucking sidestep at 0752 ! I literally nearly choked on my coffee on New St station platform. Truly Squidge you show us the best of ourselves
Gods, beautifully written and spoken. Brought a tear to my eye. This is what rugby should be about. Go Portugal!
Your videos are crazy good!
I'm so glad World Rugby saw your talent and you all managed to come to an agreement over use of their footage! Look at all the quality content Rugby would be missing out on!!
Its fun to watch portugal play! I played against a few of the starting players when i was 16/17/18 that was fun too
Mostra a coragem dos Lobos que nunca desistiram e sempre acreditaram tudo e possivel com dedicacao.
Watching this NOW for the first time.
Man.. you should play the lottery, I'll buy the ticket!
Man, that vídeo moved me. As portuguese i could feel that you really went to the core of portuguese soul to describe how we overcome the challenges, with heart and courage. We are fighters 😉
Congrats bro, you got a new fan 🤘👍😎
Brilliant vídeo! Congrats!
And They Did, very good effort, and the first win ever in a World Cup against Fiji, was amazing!! The way they celebrate man, contagious...
Impossible not to get chills with THAT anthem! Pure passion
bless you squidge, your optimism is contagious! Your enthusiasm cheers me up! Good on you mate.
This aged so well!!! 😃
That final repecharge game truely was something.
Not the best quality match, but the tension was insane for the whole 80. Amazing drama in the closing stages.
That match was so painful to watch. The pitch was utter sheet
Watching all of these videos has somehow made me want to support every team at this WC.
It has also made me more excited for a WC than I have in a LONG time
i’m still sad about them beating the usa but i hope nothing but the best for them!
As you put the circle in the Fiji-Portugal game, now please made the video🇵🇹
What an incredible story, and what an incredible potential! You have done more for Portuguese Rugby than all of the Portuguese media combined..! I honestly think we are going to do better than our last world cup, and who knows, even win a game!! Thank you very much for this!
VAMOS LA LOBOS!! ATE OS COMEMOS, CARALHO!!😁😁
World Rugby should be paying you for these you're making every game a must watch!! Making us aware about rivalries we know nothing about!....!😢 I need to get a clone, just to make sure I don't miss a single game RN!😂
Love to see it! “Os Lobos” though, not “Los Lobos”!
Vamos a eles rapazes!
0:38 Squidge - Uruguay one love. I'm so proud of my country 😉
