Yes, I'm sure you'll just skip to the song... but this was really an excuse to talk about the relevance of 'charts' in the era of the playlist. So... discuss...
The intro was good lmao I recently got a record player not too long ago so I can finally relate, sadly I don't own a copy of after hours so can't speak on that.
I can't express how happy I'd be to see you "react" to Kiss Land and Trilogy (or just House of Balloons, the first mixtape of the Trilogy series). The Weeknd is way more than your average pop singer, he single-handedly changed R&B. Much love!
He should react to Abel properly, in order, and we (OGXO) would be here in the comments IN ABUNDANCE because that's what we do in reactions on bigger (or smaller) channels lol.
His mixtapes weren't even pop tho and he is popular now because he moved away from his early work into a very 'poppy' sound 😂 Credit to him tho he knows how to make a hit lol
@@babygravy7 i could really never get behind Kiss Land. I loved Beauty Behind The Madness when I first listened in 2015, then listened through Kiss Land and found it was over-encumbered with boring guff. I feel the same towards Trilogy too
As one of the people constantly requesting you react to The Weeknd's music, I really appreciated that you did. I was also pleasantly surprised that you discussed the topic of charts. It makes for a really interesting conversation. Here's to hoping you cover more of The Weeknd and these kinds of topics in the future 🥂
Whole album is actually pretty great and at one time all of the songs were on the Billboards chart. That's why everyone got mad at The Grammys when he got snubbed. It was a monster single, monster of a release, monster sales etc etc Grammys suck though so I guess it's a moot point.
His Trilogy mixtapes were his debut projects and aren't nearly as popular as his recent work as they are far less 'pop'. However, by his hardcore fanbase they're often thought of as his best work, the House of Balloons mixtape in particular. If you plan on listening to one of his projects, I recommend you start there Mr Mercurial.
I love and respect how much he’s immersed himself into our world, I know next time he’s listening to an album and the weeknd is a feature he’ll feel the same excitement we do
The drum machine is a Roland TR-707 from my ears It also helps that The Weeknd has used this drum machine on one of his best songs: House Of Balloons / Glass Table Girls
Now I'm excited to see what you think of the whole album. It's a nice mix of nostalgic 80s pop songs and gloomy atmospheric r&b tracks that he was initially known for. And from what I can tell the album he's currently working on is going to be a pure pop album inspired by Quincy Jones and Giorgio Moroder
the weeknd isnt just pop but he's got some really good pop records like i can't feel my face and montreal is and there's lots of good pop artists nowadays . its not the genre i listen to most but i still got a few artists and albums i enjoy like billie eilish - when we fall asleep where do we go and dua lipas future nostalgia.
always the best reaction videos, nobody has this depth of discussion, animation, energy, humor, production quality, knowledge, open mindedness, honesty, and general passion for music that im guaranteed to find coming together in each and every video on this channel
Finally! A Weeknd reaction! Mercurial, you gotta listen to these comments. After Hours, Kiss Land, Trilogy... you'll have a really fun time with his whole discography, I guarantee it!
I think it is easier to be a one-hit wonder by just looking into the other songs. I think you can get away easier with 'copying' trends, because the chartssongs are rather similar (3min, synths, repetitive, not really deep texts). But idk... the playlist point is so true tho, 'Lose Yourself' by Eminem is one of my most listened to songs and I don't even like Eminem or the song that much, it's just that is a lot of my playlists lol. Love the conversation you had, happy you're close to 100k :) Keep up the good work
It also broke the record for the most weeks in the top 5 most weeks spent in the top 10 as a matter of fact it went 52 consecutive weeks in the top 10 becoming the first-ever song to spend a whole year in the top 10 and also broke the record for most weeks in the top 20 and top 40 it also holds the record for the most weeks spent a top of the radio charts at 35 weeks he currently just released a new single this frame it debuted at number six given him his 13th top 10 hit him just missing his 10 th top 5 hit as currently has nine top five hits and has six number one hits he really is a very special artist
Also a lot of us weeknd fans like me not only did I buy a CD that only had two singles on it blinding lights and heartless which was the first two singles off of after-hours I bought the autograph copy I chose the heartless autograph front but still got both songs on that CD also bought it digitally then when after-hours came out I bought after-hours digitally and bought the physical copy with the latest single he just released I bought the digital copy and the physical copy actually bought two different physical copies I have two CDs of it but you are very correct a lot of more people stream it but still you have to do massive number streaming wise to actually get it to go into the charts and he is one of the most streamed artists out there he does massive numbers as far as selling his stuff too thought in March of 2020 when after hours came out he sold 420,000 physical copies watching today's album sales is huge
The thing i took from this video. I need to listen to the killers again. Also i love the weeknd and the whole experience that's been coming with his albums lately. Much love
Very much appreciated the discussion on the relevance of Top Charts in the era of streaming. :) Edit: The Weeknd fanked his thans. He sank his fangs like a vamp while he sang(s).
By the way, the topic you brought up at the end about artists writing a song just as a throwaway for the record company that became their biggest smash hit.... That was Ceelo Green with "Fuck You" He's another artist you should definitely react to. I'd personally LOVE that. He doesn't get enough love for his skills of rapping and singing (solo or with Danger Mouse)
No spoilers here, but you’ll be in for a nice surprise if you do end up listening to trilogy, those Michael Jackson comparisons will gain new meanings once u reach Echoes of Silence!
I'm in it for the Weeknd! Please react to Trilogy starting with House of Balloons. I would really love your personal opinions on all 3 of his mixtapes. Also Kiss Land is not for everyone. But it's one of his best to me. Beauty Behind The Madness is my Top 2. Love you shirt! and your reaction to Blinding Lights XO
you should totally listen to the garden either the album mirror might steal your charm or kiss my super bowl ring, there 2 brothers and make super different sounding music which i think you’d like it’s hard to categorize but it could be punk, pop punk, or anything
Charting is easier now cause of streaming but theres a lot more competition today than there was 30 years ago and its still impress to hold this record for the Weeknd. This record will be broken again and its just how it is. After Hours album is very 80s hopefully you can hear it!
I don't think charting is necessarily any easier and I'm not sure there's truly any more 'meaningful' competition... but the era of set, static playlists that are fed to populations by music-streaming corporations pretty much rules out any comparisons of physical vs digital. Is it 'that' impressive to rack up years in the charts when you're there because everyone who picks a 'summer'/'indie'/'chill'/'happy'/whatever playlist listens to a particular Weeknd/Killers song every single time? Maybe. That's definitely a topic for further discussion. Charting could also be 'relatively' easy in the physical era if you timed it right. Just after Christmas was often a good time to release a single. From wikipedia: "The lowest weekly sale for a number one single is 17,694 copies held by Orson's "No Tomorrow" in 2006. Rihanna's Talk That Talk has become the lowest-selling album to reach number one on the UK chart. The singer's sixth studio album returned to number one on the British tally on Sunday (August 12), despite being first released last November. However, the collection only sold 9,578 copies to reach the summit, making it the UK's lowest-selling number one since modern records began, reports Music Week." I know these are borderline 'digital era'... but over the decades bands have got to number one with relatively few sales. Interestingly if I were to release a single or album and you guys promised to buy it/stream it... I'd have nearly 100,000 sales (if you bought it). I'd probably get to number one! Ha ha! We should honestly try that one day just for a laugh!!! :-)
Who wants to bet that we get ALL the Pelicans on the intro to Kissland? I just feel like we'll see them take their majestic flight before Abel even begins to sing lol. If there's one part of the album that would get it, that's probably it....and track number 7 lol. (didn't wanna spoil the titles in case he reads this postl
I don’t think it’s easier because there is also more mainstream artists. so usually you can’t even hold on to a spot because 5 artists who are relatively popular will release a song or project the week after yours and either take away your number one or make it harder for your songs to stay in the chart because of the flood of music being released. The only people who really stay on the chart are the biggest of pop stars with the biggest audience or whoever is the current new artist that everyone is listening to and has some staying power (Olivia)
A song is removed from the Billboard Hot 100 if it’s ranking falls below 25 after 52 weeks. Blinding Lights stayed on the chart for 90 consecutive weeks. It was just named Billboard’s greatest Hot 100 single of all time.
You should be a columnist. Your have a canny and keen sense of language that is inviting, humorous, direct, welcoming, theoretical but also clear and to the point to which you are trying to assert. Basically I’m trying to say you are entertaining as FUCK!! 😂👏🙌
I think, playlist curation and the success of singles VS albums only helps to perpetuate the sales of artists who are ALREADY selling in mass amounts. The way Spotify's algorithm works for example, makes it directly way more difficult for independent/small time musicians to sell their product because of the pure oversaturation of musical content and (likely) payola playlisting. Plus if huge pop artists earn (virtually) nothing from these platforms, you can imagine the general income of a band who gets one gig a month and has never sold a CD. There are still landmark albums in genres that sell well as whole projects and have audiences, the single is just a greater marketing tool because you can invest less and potentially reap a larger financial benefit. Stars who've already made their bag years ago like Nicki Minaj release plenty of droplet singles just to keep cash going, plus musical discovery works entirely different now, you have songs from DECADES ago, indie b sides and forgotten pop songs charting on mainstream music charts and playing in shops because of TIKTOK. And playlisting may be "killing" the album, but it IS encouraging musical adventure and discovery (if you can have all sorts of different songs in one playlist, what's to stop you from listening to whole projects by those old rock bands you just discovered?). This is all to say, it is an interesting and nuanced discussion and I love your content! All love 🤘
PLEASE REACT TO THE TRILOGY ALBUM, PREFERABLY THE 3 MIXTAPES SEPARATELY BUT TRILOGY WORKS. ALSO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU SMOKE A PARTICULAR FLOWER BEFORE HAND.
