    Bro, those canals were constructed by the Dutch for drainage purposes. Georgetown is about six feet below sea level at high tide. All along the coastal region was swamp land, which the Dutch, and their famed engineering skills, managed to push the water back. For example, that sea wall that you see when you were interacting with the accessories vendor, is where the Atlantic Ocean was kept at bay. Without that wall, the city would be inundated, which happens frequently due to global warning today. A higher wall is definitely needed.
    Guyana is 83,000 square miles. Jamaica is 4,400 square miles. As you go south, the elevation rises. The airport, for example, is about 100 feet above sea level. The real beauty of Guyana is its hinterland. That’s where the landscape changes from mountains, plains, jungle, hills, rivers, streams, lakes, etcetera.
    Guyana is that little engine that could: but hasn’t thus far!

    • @KeenanLambert198
      @KeenanLambert198  Год назад

      Spot on my friend. Once I saw canals everywhere I knew the city had to be under sea level... Amsterdam is also undersea level and is protected via levees. I wonder why the Dutch even bothered building upon swamp instead of building on hardened soil. Maybe they saw controlling the mouth of the Demerara River as important? Or maybe it was cultural and they just couldn't help it.

    • @Delitewon
      @Delitewon Год назад +1

      @@KeenanLambert198
      You’re correct with respect to Amsterdam and the notoriety of Dutch civil engineering. The Demerara river isn’t the problem. The Atlantic Ocean is. Actually, that area of Kingstown where you were bantering with the vendor, the currents there are extremely strong. That’s the confluence of both ocean and river.
      Remember that seventy percent of the population reside on that tiny strip of coastland which happens to be swamp. The Dutch did that to set up their administrative base and slave trading outposts. They didn’t want to take the jungle, so to speak. A fifteen minute plane ride out of the city and you are in a jungle where most of the Amerindian (indigenous) reside.

    • @KeenanLambert198
      @KeenanLambert198  Год назад

      @@Delitewon I meant controlling the mouth of the Demerara River in the security/military and trading sense.... Instead of building on the swampland, maybe the main settlement could have been laid out slightly up river south of Harbor Bridge. Maybe not as convenient, I guess navigating the strong currents of the Demerara would have been somewhat difficult pre-steamship for traders.

    • @ianbynoe6515

      , the Dutch wanted to plant sugar cane, cotton, coffee etc. They also wanted to make sugar. Coastal Guyana is where fertile lands are. About a million African slaves toil to carve Guyana out of the Atlantic Ocean. Where you are standing is the Atlantic Ocean.

    • @ianbynoe6515
      @ianbynoe6515 Год назад

      @@KeenanLambert198 , Guyana has a siltation problem. All the mud from the Amazon River in Brazil has destroyed Guyana's coastline. This mud even gets into the artificial drainage system and blocks the drains causing flooding. Guyana is not even a real place. It's an artificial country. And with climate change, Guyana will not exist very soon. Every summer Guyana is underwater from the May/June rainy season.

      @@KeenanLambert198 Yes, it was my first time in Africa full stop. It felt kind of surreal landing in Banjul, Gambia and seeing the African continent for the first ever time. No one in my family has seen west Africa since at least 1807. But Gambia was just a stop over to Sal, Cape Verde. Nice place and to be honest apart from Tobago and Aruba, the best beaches I have ever seen. The beaches on Sal island were just long, wide, blinding white and EMPTY beside a turquoise coloured sea. The people themselves would not look out of place from Caribbean people. The whole place has a Caribbean feel to it, which I must say I did not expect. For us, who live in Europe (of Caribbean descent) , going to Cape Verde is becoming an alternative to the actual Caribbean for say just a vacation/holiday. I met a lot of UK people with links to Jamaica, T&T and Montserrat in Cape Verde. A holiday in Cape Verde is about 2/3 of the flight time to the Caribbean and about 50-60% cheaper than say a 10 day stay in the Caribbean - given variables of course. If you like fish, you cannot go wrong in Cape Verde. The next time I want an eating/resting holiday in the winter months, I will pick Cape Verde again.
