Elsa Hairstyle, Inspired By Disney (Frozen) Coronation Updo

- The twist and bun updo hairstyle Elsa was wearing at the coronation in the Disney movie "Frozen."
Since posting Anna's hairstyle (from the movie Frozen) last week, we have had over 100 requests to do a tutorial for Elsa's coronation hairstyle! We weren't really planning on doing any other "Frozen hairstyles," but how could we ignore that? ;)
Besides, with the holidays right around the corner, I think this would make a lovely hairstyle for Christmas, New Years Eve, or any other holiday occasion that may be celebrated this time of year. This style is simple, elegant, and classic... don't you think?
Keep in mind, there are several different ways you could go about creating this updo. We first tried placing a headband over her head and tucked the hair around it to form the twist. Then we tried making a "French twist" along the side... which actually turned out looking very true to the original style, but was quite difficult and required tons of bobby pins. We even tried a french fishtail, which looked very cool...but not quite right. We finally settled on this simple twist (shown in our tutorial below) because we wanted something that was quick and easy to create for everyone. Although it did not turn out exactly like the original style, I think it is close enough. If you have blonde hair and bangs as well as a tiara or crown, you could really make this look authentic!

I wonder how this turns into a tousled french braid just by taking out one pin and running her fingers into her hair.

I also think about that, but i think is because elsa have the hair longer in her braid and the other part was in her bun, and when she take off her pin one part was in the braid and the other was free

I think it is funny in the movie, how this looks like a very nice twisted updo but then when she takes out a little pin all of a sudden it's a loose French braid. ;)

It's not braided until about 1:20. From there you braid it and then finish the bun style. My friend and I did a cosplay using her own hair. Her's was ridiculously long (hip length) but not as thick. After I teased the crap out of it to get the thickness and volume I braided it, THEN did this technique. It ended up looking relatively the same, but it takes a lot of time and made me wonder how long Elsa's hair really is out of the braid....

I'm so glad you're doing this. Everyone seemed to be loving just the french braid and pigtails the most, which I do love, but really I think everyone has done that before. I really love Anna's coronation style.
I hate to burst your bubble, but this was Elsa's coronation hairstyle.
My but that's passive aggressive. Looking at it a second time, I can see that it is, in fact, Elsa... (I watched both.) But, that makes no difference to my main point which was that I was more interested in seeing the two coronation styles replicated than the braids and so I really enjoyed this **and** the other tutorial. I don't think it's terribly insulting to make a small blunder with which tutorial I've posted on given that I am complimenting it. Thank you for doing these beautiful tutorials, PrincessHairstyles.
I kinda wanted to know even though it's animated how she goes from the updo to the French braid because I thought that would be cool
It sort of irritates me that when Elsa starts singing Let it Go, she has her hair done like this and little short bangs, and when she lets her hair down (first of all. she doesn't even release the pin from the right spot in her hair. o,o) it suddenly becomes a fluffy and plaited.
Love the movie, and this character, but seriously that hair is just unrealistically gorgeous. (hair envy)

I'm confused. .... in the movie, elsa's hair is like that . But when she sang let it go. She just remove something on her head then it becomes a braid. How did it happen?

heather23renae braided. its just another word, and she or he is right about that. The beginning until up the ear with the twist is okay, everything after that not anymore.

The twist is okay until right to the ear, after that the hair should have been braided (wattled) and formed a knot.
And Elsa s Hairstyle is not like that. ö_ö

I thought it looked more like a fish tail braid that ends in a bun.
It could be. Cartoon hair is sometimes hard to interpret. We actually tried several different twists before we settled on this one. I think a fishtail would look great though!
The reason why our hair is not too-same like Elsa, because Elsa have 400.000 extra-long CGI threads, defeating Rapunzel's (25.000). So, if you have less than Rapunzel, that's why we can't make braids with this coronation hairstyle. I know there is a hidden big braid in Elsa's coronation style cuz Elsa have 400.000. So, don't try to make Elsa's hairstyle, unless you have some thick wig.

I want to do this, but I have shoulder length hair. You should at least TRY it. I might wear next Monday to school if I can do it. It's worth a shot.
I have to ask you something: I'm looking for a hairstyle we easy to do on yourself. Can you give me an idea or make a new video for me? I have to wake up earlier than the others in my house, because I leave early. No one can do my hair for me. You're the expert of hair on my opinion! I'm leaving this up to you!
I keep on noticing in these tutorials (specifically coronation) that when they do the bun, the first layer should be a braid, not a twist. Second, they never leave the bangs as they do in the movie. Thirdly, the twist gets bigger as it goes, it doesn't stay the same thickness. Finally, the twist that leads into the bun is completely separated from the rest of the hair. For the last one, you should probably pick it up from the head, then twist it down.
Elsa actually has a fishtaled French braid. That's why she can wear it up and it looks like a twist, but when she takes it down it looks like a braid. Just depends how big or small your pieces are in the fishtail.
To make it more like Let it Go, I twirled it in the front, then Dutch braided the rest, thing it up. I clipped it in place. Hen, if you undo the clip, it will work almost like Let it Go did.
Actually, you can make a hairstyle that you can actually take out the bun and it is the braid, like what Elsa did. Just make a braid like Elsa in the back, and curl it into a bun, with a piece still loose, and wrap it around the side, lift up your hair in the front, put the tail end under it, and use Bobby pins to hold, but make then a bit loose, so you can easily pull it out into the braid!!!!

My hair is so short i could only do a regular bun in the back not a cute but still looks pretty good i may do this everyday. ^_^ looks better then my hair down and my hair is sp hort looks stupid with a stubby pony tail i like this a lot.
When I did the coronation hairstyle I did a LET IT GO song when it turns into a braid my hair turns into one! Really!

It's a cartoon, it's not really possible. The braid she had was a French braid, so you would have seen it, but you can't. Cartoons don't always depict realistic things (if you didnt know), this is one of them.
