The Edgewood Experiments and Operation Delirium

  • From 1955 to 1975 the US Army conducted secret human experiments with mind-altering drugs at Edgewood Arsenal. The test subjects? Nearly 7,000 of our own soldiers. Situated near Chesapeake Bay, Edgewood Arsenal has been America's research center for chemical warfare for over a century. Some of the most lethal chemical agents the world has ever known were created, tested and manufactured there. In 1955 Edgewood rolled out their Army Medical Volunteer Research Program. With help from our soldiers, they tested over 250 different chemical agents. Then BZ was developed. A typical incapacitating dose of BZ caused a slew of effects; scattered function, thinking, and altered perception to name a few. A single dose of less than 1 mg could produce delirium lasting several days.
    Was the work they were doing at Edgewood violating medical ethics or was the human research they conducted sound and necessary science in the name of national security? The Army didn’t believe that anyone was hurt, but many servicemen suffered from a range of adverse health effects following their time at Edgewood, including peeling skin, cancer, movement disorders, and psychological issues.
    The volunteers were all under a strict secrecy oath for 50 years AFTER the program ended! . Many of the soldiers felt they were misinformed about the nature of the experiments they signed up for. Saying they were never told about the adverse or possible long term effects the drugs would have on them.

      The footage near the beginning was trippy.. I enjoy old military footage, especially the secret experiments. Nuke video's are also hauntingly curious. Great vid. This is the first video that popped up when I searched for (Operation Delirium). I'm looking forward to watching more of your content. So much for getting to bed early tonight.
      edit: well, your armchair investigator vids anyway! Makeup really isn't my thing.. :P

    I used to be proud to be American, I still am but, there are many things that makes me ashamed, embarrassed and pissed as all hell! If they wanted Medical Care they probably gets thrown out the window like the man that thought he was getting treatment for the LSD he was subjected to! And then I think of the four men that were told they had bad blood! I hope and PRAY our government has stopped doing things like this but I'm not naive anymore. It should scare all of us that they think they can do whatever they , protected by law and no consequences???!!! I had never heard this story before, thank you for sharing it!

    I went to Edgewood middle when they were in the process of removing the mustard gas they had stored on base behind the school. I will never forget the paper they sent us home with showing us and our parents what to do during a mustard gas leak. It was literally pictures of a cartoon beaver or an otter shutting windows and putting towels in front of doors. Freaking creepy. Right before 9/11 too
    I also worked on base at the troop store from 06-08. Loved working there, but anytime anything needed fixed like a freezer or a cooler, it would take months to get it done.

    • @ArmchairInvestigator

    • @nikkis8937
      @nikkis8937 Год назад +3

      @@ArmchairInvestigator basically they put us in the gym I think where they cut off outside air. Kids with medical issues went to the library. This was also around the same time as 9/11 so yeah, we had quite a few drills.
      I did learn recently that my grandfather who was a Korean and ww2 vet was stationed at Edgewood arsenal right before he was discharged in the early 1950’s. I don’t know what he did tho but afterwards my family just kind of stayed in Edgewood

    Ok I was stationed at Apg Edgewood and while had a psych break down where I had to be put in patient hospital in DC for several weeks. The whole time I was stationed there I felt very off and had suicidal thoughts wich i never had before. By the time I was stationed there I was already in the army for 4 years and was successful with many awards but once there due to the mental health issues the discharge me out and diagnosised me with a personality disorder but up to that point had never had issues. There were several other people in my unit who as well lost there minds as well and we're discharge out . We were all in main chemical headquarters company. We also we all diagnosed with asthma. Which I never had breathing problem before. We were given monthly shots they said the were anthrax vaccine and they had us in testing research building were they told us we could touch the walls because we would be exposed to chemicals. I think every day that maybe they were doing something to s since we were all lower enlisted. Most everyone in our company were officers or E7 and up. I don't know how I could find out the VA is no help and w ok not even give me a rating for my mental health diagnosis

    As a young person, I experimented with deliriants (high dose Benadryl to be exact: a nightmarish hallucinatory day). The duration of this drug is about twice as long and that is ridiculous. I did this willingly and spent most of my time wondering if I was actually under the influence and the other half dealing with horrifying hallucinations that felt like nightmares.
    But then to play devil's advocate, is not a personal nightmare less harmful than creating an actual nightmare in the form of war (especially in the terms of today's insurgent warfare)?
