After all these years I just realized the actions Nabi does at the end to keep them from getting covered in trash at the end (dancing, riding the suitcase, pulling a flying DOki), are the VERY same actions Doki fantasized about doing with him in step 1 lol, that's amazing!

This was, and remains, my favorite animated series online.

This part in particular is my favourite - I'm a 31 year old man walking home quietly sobbing while watching it. Easily the best love story I know, and all done without dialogue. This should honestly be used for animation or storytelling theory classes for students. It's sublime.
Step 1 is my second favourite simply because I watched it so many times before this was even a series. But this part is just a perfect payoff to the emotional journey of the previous parts.
i will never forget doki nabi story. this is so well made. and im also reaching my 30, and this animation still make me feel very emotional
Ok, so other fan's opinions on the ribbons on the tree. I know there is a tradition of tying a ribbon to a tree when making a wish, but when I first watched this, I had the impression that all the ribbons represented all the critters Doki had spent taking care of over the years, that no matter when tragedy struck with varying animals over the years for whatever reason, she'd add another ribbon to the tree. She'd keep going, keep caring for them. Am I the only one seeing it that way? Just curious.
It certainly came to mind, for when I saw it the first time.
6 months old but who gives. You give valid points and I haven't seen it that way. For me it was just a metaphor. A dead tree representing hopelesness and decay - which after the fourth episode also describes their relationship. With the Ribbons she basically gave the tree new leafs and thus new life / hope.
In the end, both viewpoints end on the same note: Doki's character is always prelevant, enduring and hopeful and I believe that was the main message the author wanted to bring across.

I just found out about it today, and it actually makes me mad that I'm not able to throw money toward the project.
I just realized something. When Doki is saying goodbye to the Hedgehog, there isn't a background around them even if it is the remastered version, so is possible that she is waving goodbye to it, seeing it has died. They are waving goodbye from the afterlife. And is possible that the Hedgehog represented the relationship between Doki and Nabi, seeing how he was happy in Act3, but in Act4 he got tired and aggresive, until their relationship was so injured it died/Doky let it go. But then Nabi finds new inspiration with the little animal he found, a new chance of a relationship. Ok, that's really cool, that was probably discovered before but idc.

I watched this first when I was around 13-14, I'm now 26 and am still completely in love with this series. When Final Step came out I made a prophecy that whoever I met in the future that loved this series as much as me would be the person I end up with. Hasn't come true yet :P Still watch Step 2 every year on my birthday too! xP

Found this video again and I still love it as much as I love it in the past or maybe more.
Race, culture, religion, etc. doesn't really matter in the end when you find somebody you truly love unconditionally.

It’s 2024, and I still remember the choppy flash animation like it’s only yesterday. I bawled my eyes out the first time I watched it…
진짜 아무리 생각해도 대단한게 한국 노래에 한국느낌의 배경, 잔인하거나 선정적인 요소 없이 정말 순수한 사랑 이야기로 뉴그라운즈라는 해외 유명 사이트에서 1위 차지한게 신기하고 너무 멋있음...

Looking back, while there are a *lot* of great moments in this, I feel like we don't pay enough attention to Nabi looking at a sign informing him it was 50 km to the airport and just going "Guess it's leg day, huh?" Like, he didn't *know* his friends and frenemies would be there to help him out, so dude was ready to run the whole way.
It's 2023 and I am still falling in love with the story of Nabi and Doki like it's my first time watching the series. 2nd step and final step were my favorites. I always play 2nd step's music "Happy Birthday to me" by Bulldog Mansion every time I celebrate my birthday because I always celebrate it alone while Final Step's "Imagine" by Brunch still makes me joyfully tear up as I remember the scene were Doki and Nabi hugged each other. Such a powerful scene!

They also removed the part where he opens his mouth in shock. And they made the pan up over the tree longer before bringing in the music, which I think lessens the impact. And they made the title text slide in a fraction of a beat too slow, which lessens the impact even more. I don't know why they made these changes. I wish they would have just remastered it without changing anything else.

There is just something about this moment, the mix of emotions, Doki's Joy, Nabi's last bit of doubt confronting him as the sign switching back and forth alongside the very people that broke him in the previous step. He knew what he wanted, he just had to take the final step.

The series ended where it began.... i love this series, but i don't have the money to help you on your indiegogo campaign... i really want to see what the Jjintta set episode "Another step" will be like!!!
In South Korea, tying ribbons to a tree's branch, especially if the tree is without leaves, symbolizes making a wish. Doki was wishing for love and happiness when she tied her little hedgehog's green ribbon to the tree because she thought she lost it with Nabi. After what happened recently, plus the death of the hedgehog, who had nothing to do with the hatred since he was neither a cat nor a rabbit, Doki had lost hope for her society. Nabi, while having good intensions, distancing himself from her didn't do her no favors. But as you can see, there's a lot of green ribbons on that tree, meaning Doki didn't put all those ribbons on it, but past "Dokis" and "Nabis" have put their wishes on those trees. Nabi seeing the tree makes him realize that he and Doki are just the latest victims of this hatred, and he can't stand it anymore. So he runs after Doki: a first since she was doing all the chasing.
I read your interpretation with great interest. The green ribbons on this tree were tied by Doki, but your interpretation has given me another inspiration. Thank you so much.
@@amallocI just saw it as other interracial couples that had gotten hurt due to the hatred over the years. Some of the ribbons were so old and tattered, signaling that they've been there for a while. Made me think of the generations of lovers that couldn't make it because of hatred like Nabi and Doki almost didn't. But even though they were hurt, they still wish for future generations to find happiness and maybe even acceptance that they themselves couldn't find in their time.
Sure ribbons can be worn away with time, but the wish still lingers, especially when the tree still stands. After all, some trees can outlive several generations of humans.
I can't get over that moment at 4:45, it makes me smile every time. The music and animation sync up perfectly right at that moment, it honestly makes me tear up from the nostalgia.

7 years later and still makes me cry
After seeing that they will make a "spicy" episode, it makes me so happy that they are continuing the series!! This series/story tells about a cat male named Nabi and a bunny/rabbit female named Doki, who fell in love with the male and wanted him as hers, as they dated the male seemed to have found out this feeling he has for her but sadly after she got hurt, his mind got shattered leading him to thinking that he couldn't protect his beloved, so he broke up with her for the safety, after upon seeing the tree that she made, he realized that he didn't care what people think for them, he wanted to do the right thing and went for her with some help, in the end they got together and loved each other through the end...Now why am I going to get inspired and make a series based on this??

So a few comments have found the analogy between the Hedgehog and their relationship represents the status of said relationship, literally dying when they separate, and how the baby chick that Nabi found represents the new possibility of a relationship. To further analyze that analogy with the other animals that make an appearance, we can say that each symbolizes an aspect of Doki, with how the hound dog would be loyal and loving, the penguin spiritually representing dreams and adaptability, the rhino representing her strong and bold approach to their love, and the small reptile representing her desire to protect and keep close to Nabi.
Furthering the symbolism, to confirm, yes, the ribbons represent the wishes of the pro-intermarriage wishes for interspecies love to be accepted, which is why Nabi is so focused on said tree. He finally realizes that he and Doki aren't alone in their wishes for love between two separate species to be possible, hence his scarf returning to green after this realization, his hope reigniting.
Further, further more, you can see post protest crashing scene, a rabbit against interspecies marriage falling (figuratively and literally) for a kitty, giving further hope for this dream of so many.
To put it bluntly; love who you wanna love, don't protest about it, don't riot, don't incite violence, don't find reasons to try to be so oppressive of either being for or against it. If your for it, good for you, whether that be between two men, women, between conflicting cultures (both species represented by the two Asian cultures that may have deep rooted reasons to dislike each other, Japan and Korea) and many other ways that it may not be approved of.
Love who you love; if you both love eachother, that's enough, right? If you end up not getting the approval of a few strangers who you won't even remember a years time from then, why give them the time? It really is as simple as that; just be accepting of who you are, and accept whatever you wish to accept about yourself, and your loved one.

That’s a unique interpretation. Certainly more uplifting than believing the ribbons represent animals Doki lost in that timeframe, but I do see how both would be motivating for Nabi.

This is so sad, they didn't have to go the way they did, trying to protect Doki.

The year is now 2021. I watched these series ever since they came out, one by one, in Newgrounds.
I come back to this series because it is a hard reminder to everyone. No matter what race, what color, what gender... it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks.
What matters, is what you feel.
That, and of course, nostalgia. I shed tears for this series you know.

One aspect to this animation series I never gave proper credit for, is the ability to convey emotion without showing faces! Very powerful!
I miss the me i knew when i discovered the first step on newgrounds, those many years ago. This video serves as a nesyalgic time machine, a bittersweet symphony of the struggle and hardships since then, and a reminder that, just as things were when step 5 came to a close when it finally came for the first time, some things remain the same, thank you for helping me keep me.
You know what the Bunny gang has got to be my favorite group of characters
I think that the “leader” bunny (or the one in the front of the group usually) is doki’s brother which is why he is so protective of her but I’m not sure

I hope the changes you made to this video won't be in the DVD 🙁 The close-up on Nabi at 1:28 is missing, the "But she…" is missing, the pan up over the tree is too long, the title text at 3:11 slides in a fraction of a beat too late… Don't get me wrong, I'm glad and grateful you remastered it; but those changes are no good 😞

I remember finding the two first episodes when I was little and LOVING the soundtrack and the story. Some years after, I came out as bisexual and trans and also found the last two chapters.
