Resolve changed the colour management for a couple years now. Would be nice to get an update. Not getting any remotely close sadly from output to what I see on a calibrated system on screen before output.
I just received my Red Komodo, and I will be doing as much future post work as possible in Resolve, so I cannot thank you enough for this clear, concise explanation of Red best practices. Thank you!
The difference that I'm getting by placing my node order as NR - TRANSFORM LUT - CREATIVE LUT - ADJUSTMENTS is insane. Completely different image, and much better in my opinion. I understand why you'd want to go transform & LUT last but for the Komodo, I'm just getting better results the other way. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong but this is whats working or me.
He recommend transform LUT as the last node right? I'm new to color grading but wouldn't this be very difficult to know how to creatively grade and adjust your footage if you haven't transformed it yet?
@@scooteractualHe is talking about the order of nodes. So you put the output LUT on the last node and make your adjustments on a node before. This way you monitor your footage in the intended color space but the first node you are making your adjustments in is still in the large color space / gamma of your source footage.
You can't just use the Rec709 space in the raw profile when working in normal (not colormanaged)? I have done that and it doesn't seem to lose any data, feels like working with the LUT on the last node.
Based on the fact that this was done with RESOLVE 16. something we're now up to 17.4 and the setting in the PROJECT SETTINGS are completely different. Some of the boxes arent there and its producing strange colors and outcome.
I'm on 17.4.6 Build 4, and I was able to follow everything just fine. Is there something you're specifically missing, or something there that you're curious about?
@@ryanwellence @grapeseeker I was only challenged to find the project presets folder. It's hidden at the top right under the three dots in the settings menu. Great video, thank you!
you can. set the color scienceto Davinci YRGB Color Managed then change resolve color management preset to custom. That will open up the same options he is showing here.
@@loosecannonfilms7127 The only option from the video I didn't see was "bypass" under input color space. Would you use same as timeline to achieve the same as bypass in Davinci 18?
@@drewposton2361 Isn't it sad, that RED is not updating this. I am in contact with them now and they told me to get lost and ask Blackmagic as their sdk is working and davinci changed it. Awful customer service to say it fair
How do you work with HDR data? I know with the older camera's you only have the Simple and Magic Motion slider. But I don't notice a change with my Komodo X HDR raw files. I can't find a straightforward answer anywhere.
This is perfect. I am about to order the red komodo and wanted to know all of this before hand. Thank you for all this info. It helps out so much. Can’t wait to have my red komodo to start filming my next movie.
I took the May, 2022 Reducation. Question: I want to work with my 6K raw footage in after effects (first tracking the clip and then applying vfx). Also, the I have to work in After Effects and Maya in 4k so I can have accurate scaling and transforms coming from my vfx. That said, would my flow, following the above, to export my 6k from Davinci (keeping the IPP2 workflow) to 4k and then take that footage into AE to do my tracking et al and then import my vfx final work back in Davinci, scaled at 4k? Thx ahead of time and VERY glad I took Reducation.
What export settings should I be using? I've checked the Force debayer to highest quality and I've also left it unchecked. Each time I export, my blacks are completely crushed compared to what I'm seeing in the color tab in Resolve.
SAME.. time they update it. I contacted RED support, they told me to ask black magic as they changed something. As if bm would be interested in telling me how to set up how to grade red files.
Great video, thanks. When I import my RED footage into Resolve there are black bars on the top and bottom of my clips. If I'm shooting in 5k what should I set my timeline resolution to in order to avoid this?
I think the Komodo shoots in 17:9 instead of 16:9 which means your image will have Blackbars in normal comps. You can set your comp to be 17:9 or just scale your footage or even in camera select 16:9

Hello! Yesterday for the first time in my life I recorded in .r3d 6k format on red komodo. and the resulting files are folders with video files inside. In some cases, folders contain one video, in other cases, folders contain several video files (which have different file sizes). Please tell me why is this happening?
for the part where he mentions 3d lookup lable interpolation and he changes it to tetrahedral, the application won't let me update the list. Does anyone have the same issue? If you guys do, let me know how i can fix that. Its around 8:30 when he mentions color management.
I tried to import my komodo x footages into resolve 18, but I could only see the audios when I dragged my folders of footages into resolve 18, is there any solutions to it? Help!!!!
Great video but please consider removing the music! it's very distracting especially when the video is in-depth tutorial where viewers have to really focus! thanks

Why is the output tone map and contrast locked. In the past cameras we were able to adjust this internally correct?
Hi Dan! is there an update for release 18 or its all the same?
Would be helpful if RED recommended export settings because blacks and gamma are so off with this.
what if some of your project footage is ARRI & XOCN from the Venice? 3 different cameras. still setting remain the same?

very well put together, but sometimes you are suddenly in a new window, software and have given no explanation as to how you got there?

So glad I came across this video. Thanks! It will be interesting to see how my 1070 (8GB) handles this footage. Fingers crossed.

this set up could be ok for the 8k helium too?

Who made the music for this. So Rad.
The music was made by Tony Anderson. The track is called "Drift".
Am i the only one who has massive gamma/color shifts after exporting from this method? Also all handles are crazy sensitive.
