Linda Is actually from Tuscon, AZ, but was talking about where the video was being broadcast to. She could sing rock, country, country rock, pop, and opera. She probably was the most successful female voice of her time (which lasted across decades). I was fortunate to see her in a small venue in Boston. It is the most wonderful concert I've ever been to. She is a very thoughtful person, and remains that way as one can gather from recent interviews. She has had Parkinson Disease for some time now and can no longer sing but she remains a light to many. I am loving that you and other reactors are giving her some love. Thanks for the reaction.

Linda Ronstadt first hit with Different Drum, was a folk song when she was with The Stone Poneys.
She helped create a genre, called alternative country or country rock. She was from a Mexican background her great great great, great grandfather was from Germany, but moved to Mexico and married into a well-established Mexican family in Sonora. She grew up in Sonora Arizona. The border changed after the Mexican American war, and her family was in Arizona.
She said if she heard it in her living room on the radio before she was 10 she could authentically sing it. She’s had country hits, rock ‘n’ roll hits and R&B hits.
She recorded three Spanish language albums, 2 mariachi and a Salsa album
She did two albums with Nelson Riddle the great American songbook
She did the Pirates of Penzance on Broadway. You could see the film of her singing opera. She did La Bohème at the public theater.
She did two albums with Dolly, Parton, Emmylou Harris, they were called Trio you will die when you hear their harmonies. They are musical sisters.
There is nothing this woman cannot do vocally.
How duets with Aaron Neville are legendary
An Oscar winning documentary on her life, called The sound of my voice. She retired in 2010 with what she thought was Parkinson’s. It’s been re-diagnosed but it has the same effect. She cannot sing anymore and it is extremely physically debilitating. But I tell you that woman is driven she still doing lectures, she’s written a book on her life, a book on the Mexican food she grew up on and produced a documentary called Linda Ronstadt and the mockingbirds. This is an organization she works with Mexican youth in California to keep them connected to their heritage and out of trouble.

If you can find it, check out her 1980 concert performance of Elvis Costello's "Party Girl." Actually, the entire concert was incredible, but now only clips of individual songs can be found. They are worth it. Also her concert in Offenbach, Germany featuring many of her best numbers , particularly "Down So Low." Then do not miss her recorded duets with JD Souther on his songs, especially "Prisoner in Disguise." Ronstadt and Souther are very special together! Have fun!

The instrument you asked about is a pedal steel guitar. It is played with finger picks on the right hand and a metal bar or "slide" in the left hand. There are three primary instruments played that way. There's Dobro guitars which look like acoustic guitars with a hubcap in the middle (actually called a "resonator"). Then there are lap steels which are often rectangular and, played across the lap (Dobros are often played that way as well). Both are tuned to open chords and the player can play other chords by sliding the slide left and right. The pedal steel is kinda the big daddy of the three. It is mounted on a stand and has both foot and knee levers to change the type of chord so it's not just stuck with major chords or whatever. Mostly used in country music.

You should react to her singing Tracks Of My Tears and Heatwave as well! Those are her best vocal performances to me
