I've been playing Schecter basses for years. The pickups have always been that way. I guess that's their thing. I've never had an issue with the wiring. Some are concerned about it being a dust trap. I've never had that problem either. However if you are concerned you can always keep your bass in a case when it's not being used. I prefer U.S. Schecter basses but they are hard to find. Anyway nice vid & enjoy. As usual, Thank You for your time!
Funky groove to begin the video! Im so happy to see this review. Ive been considering picking up the j5 to go with my Stingray. First review that ive seen on RUclips. Perfect guy for the job! Truly appreciate the information. Wider string spacing is definitely something that im looking for, but this bass might still be the one! Much obliged brother man!
Just picked up the J4. I love it. Its the perfect companion to the Sting Ray. Extremely versatile! Great review and amazing playing! Still the only review of this bass on RUclips. I like your style my man!
Ill say it since no one has done the research. As one of the pioneers in ceramic pickup design which these are. These are modeled after thier 70s pickup design. Very hot , and punchy with great mid bump. Sweet tone knob as well.
Great sounding J bass but I love my Fender 5 J bass. I’m a fan of having the option of having a bass be active or passive. If they did that for this bass, it will definitely be my back up
I experienced a few Schecter's in the past, especially those made in Korea Raiden and Hellraiser. Well... stringthrubridge... alright: possibly a PITA to change action on a fly, due to the string angle, but a way more accentuated sustain for sure! My question is: how about the scale? Usually Schecter's perform 35" scale on 5ers while stickin' to 34" on 4ers... is that right man? Thank you in advance for your kind reply
Love your videos. Just can't get into the ads RUclips has done every minute or two. It isn't driving me to subscribe to Google's RUclips. In fact, it's turning me off of just watching any video on RUclips. You make bass seem so simple and effortless. Great teaching and explanations.
Nice 5 string, i would have liked an extra couple of mm on the nut and a parallel/series push/pull instead of the coil tap, to wirey a tone..nice pickups, the larger slugs make the sound cut through a bit clearer ,just like my Jazz Epic Custom Shop bridge pick-up...best Jazz bridge pick-up I've ever heard, Jaco would have luvved it....well made bass, Shecter make great quality guitars & bass's...would be nice in a semi metallic siver/grey with cream binding, i would cover those pickups, bare wires never mix with sweat to well....good demo bud..
What's the difficulty with disclosing your signal path from Bass to DAW? ala, what is the Cabinet/Mic/Amp or is it a direct interface into the DAW? And if it is DI then what is the set up?
Thanks for the review. That bass sounds great. But I find the exposed wires to be a concern, especially after I spilled a cup of coffee and it splashed on my Carvin. (Talk about panic) And do you know the measurement of the string spacing? (I have discovered 18mm is ideal for me.
I had ordered the 4 string version and I sent it back after 24h. The general outpout was very low, the pulled tone knob almost led to silence. I missed the pickup covers. The built quality was very good and the neck felt very comfortable. Overall, I didn't like the sound, especially not when directly compared to a cheap Squier VM 70 Jazz Bass.
@@el_principe3611 that's right and I had to turn it all the way up and what I heard then was not convincing at all. It is a beautiful, well built bass in a greenish colour but the pickups and the electronics did not make up for me.
Maybe it was set up incorrectly. Sometimes it helps if you (or a certified technician) change the height of the pickups. Changed the pickup height of my bass once and it was significantly louder
Hello Marcelo! Awesome review! To someone who's considering buying a 5string bass for some freelancer gigs, within several styles, would this bass be an option? I always see/listen other bass players talking about the active basses. I do own one active 5strig bass, but I'm not so attracted to add more items to my bag. As for items I mean batteries... I don´t know, just a bit "lost" within this search... Best regards!
I both like and don't like the sound of Schecter's passive bass pickups. They sound very punchy and clear but the top end is a bit over exaggerated. If they would have been $200 cheaper, they would probably have been the best J-bass for the price, but I rather buy a Fender Player Plus, Sadowsky Metro Express or Sandberg Electra for about the same price, or even cheaper than this is.
Hi, thx for the video, really interesting and about a very interesting instrument! Re. the open pickups, my 51 Precision Bass with the "tele" single coil has a similar naked design. Problematic when playing? Not really, unless you anchor your thumb on the coil (which I don't do)... Potentially problematic when swapping pickups or working with the screwdriver? Let's not talk about that... at least I learnt the hard way how to gently unwrap a turn of wire from the coil and solder it back in the eyelid, lol! Anyway, the length of naked wire is notably shorter here. Does it have "quarter pound" sized poles? They look wider. Anyway, that's a nice instrument and I'm about to get some more info thx to the video. Never played a Schecter but I guess Rob Deleo can't be too wrong! And I wish my Fender reissues had the spoke wheel at the neck every time I have to work with the truss rod.
So are these pickups considered to be humbuckers then? I’m in the market for a bass. I’m not a bassist, but I need one for recording. Any info would help!
Hey what’s up Mr. Marcello? I am a very big fan of your work and all your videos I love when you do the finger style chord stuff, simply amazing. I was wondering if you could help me. I am still on the fence as to whether I want to primarily play with finger or to use a pic. Actually in a perfect world I would love to use a pic but sound like I’m playing with my fingers. I know there are a lot of different styles of pics, like metal ones or wooden ones or felt ones, hybrids of felt/plastic type pics. I’ve tried several different ones but I Haven’t really found one that I like or better yet one that doesn’t have that plasticky clicky sound to it. the only one that I’ve found so far is a brown colored 3 point one that’s made by Dunlop. I was wondering if you could help me. I was hoping maybe you can make a video trying to find that pic that sounds as close as possible to finger style playing. Or maybe you have already found this pic that sounds like Fingerstyle playing maybe you can give me a little bit of advice or insight as to which way I should go.
This bass looks amazing, and sounds good, but truthfully, for $900.00, I was expecting it to sound better. I agree with other commentators that the pickups will probably collect dust and dirt in them. I'd swap the pickups out for a Dimarzio 5 string J set.
You can have it in any colour you like, as long as it's black. The J4 is only available in green with a maple neck. Both are made in Indonesia. I guess these are the budget models similar to Fender's Squire range (?). The J5 certainly looks and sounds good. Just needs pickup covers lol.
Just because it's made in Indonesia doesn't mean it's cheap. I think it goes for 750-800 dollars. I don't get why people keep thinking instruments made in the east can't be quality and are always marketed towards people on a budget. This bass has stainless steel frets and and neck heel spokewheel adjustment rod. Both are high end specs but because it's made in Indonesia, think of it as a high end instrument on a budget. The pickups are USA made so this thing isn't cheaply made. Even some squiers are considered to be on par with the cheaper American made instruments
Tangalang22 Did my post say anything about the quality of these models ? I merely said they appeared to be budget models because they are made in Indonesia.... where lower labour costs result in lower retail prices. They may well be good quality instruments, as indeed are the Squire models.
I would have expected pickup covers, too and I have kept thinkingabout since I saw it first. I mean, they put covers on most their other models. I am pretty sure the exposure to dust/liquids etc is gonna be a big problem. Also unpleasing in an optical way, on a bass like this, closed pickup covers would be a no-brainer for me.
@@jumpingman8160 I'm with you a 100 percent. Put a c string for solos. We bass players need 2 get out of the box of restricting our talent to a lifeless b string.

That opening bass line is probably the sexiest, funkiest bass line I ever heard in recent memory. Hat's off to you sir.
Thank you!
This is how you demo the bass! Well done sir!
I like how you always throw in an awesome little arrangement of a song you wouldn't think would sound great on a bass.

Its always so hard to shy away from schecter. Every time I try to branch out and look at some other brands, they release something like this!
I have a schecter diamond P I bought in 2007 I will never part with it.
I like the deep tone way more than a Fender jazz. Sounds great.
Just bought the J5. taking it on tour this summer. It plays and sounds incredible

Good review, but I had liked to hear more of the B-string and how it lines up with the upper strings.
Sound waves vibrating through Wood will alter the tones and waveforms, so yes through the body improves the tone.
Somehow it's looking more gorgeous than the Fender ones

So how is parallel different than single? Really the thing I’m concerned about is any hum with the single coil.
