  • Morning exercise has become an almost spiritual practice for me nowadays. The early peace and solitude combined with physical exertion gives me the mental space I need to get aligned with what’s really important.
As I’m pulling and pushing my body against gravity, I forget about the trivial complications of daily life…
I focus on regulating my breath and executing each rep with proper technique as my mind is quietly reflecting in the background. Untangling mixed emotions, shaking off doubts and smoothing off rough character edges.
I like to think that I finish each workout 1% a better person.
Once I’m done, I feel physically and mentally lighter - I’m in peace with myself… I have sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. Combined with energy-boosting chemicals in my bloodstream this creates a powerful momentum that carries over to the rest of my day.

I do all my restistance-training exercise in the morning as well as LISS (walking my dog for 40 minutes). All before breakfast. It just works best for my schedule. That's what it's all about. Just do it at a time that works for you and be consistent.

Getting the motivation to get out of bed. In the UK now sunrise is ~8:00 and just now is 8:50 and getting bright outside. It's a struggle to get moving.

My biggest obstacle is that I work early in the morning. I tried early morning workouts from August to November though, and I was always in a rush, I couldn't focus properly because of it. I woke up at 4 am and I was still always stressed because of time. This month I changed my workouts to the afternoon and I feel so much better and relaxed, because I have more time to do everything and my body feels stronger as well. I miss watching the sunrise post workout though, and the weather and solitude of those early workouts!

My biggest issue in the morning is that all my senses seemed to be turned up to 10. Bright lights, loud noises, even my sense of taste is much stronger in the morning. I also find too much strenuous physical activity in the morning is likely to give me a headache. I don't feel completely myself until I've had a snack at around 10 am. I should add that I also hate eating until at least a few hours from waking. I would never wake in the morning and have a big breakfast. It would be nauseating.
    Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Hi Anthony, I get up just after 5am on weekdays and do a 4.5km walk and 3 days a week do a bodyweight workout supplemented by dumbbells after. The hardest thing is getting enough quality sleep. Getting up is easy now I've formed strong habits though. It's helped me lose nearly 20kg in 12 months and I hope to lose close to that in the next 12 months (I started from 128kgs). I just need to remember to keep on training 😃💪

I haven't tried it lately but in the past whenever I exercised in the morning, I felt my body was too slow and clunky and didn't follow my brain commands! I had a few episodes of vertigo as well which were not only unpleasant but also scary.
Another obstacle I face is the cold winters of Canada which make it extra complicated to exercise outdoors, especially in the morning.
You have inspired me to give morning exercise another try. I'll keep you posted on my impression.

The thing I struggle with that keeps me from training early in the morning is my work schedule. Usually I have to start work at 5am which means I have to wake up at 3am. (A lot of times I hit the snooze so i wake up at 3:30). I have to out the door by 4 or 4:30am to go to work whether that be walking or taking the bus. With those in mind, it’s hard for me to get a consistent workout in. Perhaps I overthink and I’m making excuses but that’s my struggle. On a side note, you perfectly described my morning bad habits with the snooze button and checking my social media lol.

I have always been doing my workouts in the morning. Thanks for the video to encourage me more in doing them. My only issue that I face, when doing them, is sometimes my rest times tend to extend a bit longer because I am fixing and packing my lunch for work during those rest times. Other than that, morning workouts have become a staple in my morning routine.

Starting work at 7an and the UK weather put me off early morning outdoor workouts, although it would be nice to get it out of the way for the day and improve mental attitude. Also weighted dips done later in the day are more productive for me than done in the morning.

Obstacles to morning workouts for me (or for any time of day): 1. stay up too late 2. bed/sleep more comfortable as I start work early as it is 3. Self-limiting beliefs and negative self-talk seem stronger upon first waking up. 4. 30-40 minute commute each way once the pandemic is over. 5. I'm too tired and busy. The excuse list is large and heavy :)

My main issue with morning workouts is work related too. My job is quite physical and I think that working out early would have an impact on how much energy I would have for my work. I also work in a variety of locations so travel time and an ability to get a decent meal either before or after working out would be an issue.

Hey Anthony, I agree that what we do in the morning does affect the rest of the day and I would like to start training in the morning. My big challenge with training in the morning is how stiff and groggy I feel when I first wake up. It takes me a few hours to actually feel awakened and a little more limber (after spending 30 minutes just stretching and doing mobility movements)and by then the day is well underway and there’s no longer time to train bc I have to go to work. Any tricks to awaken my body and mind faster would be appreciated! Also going out in the cold weather that we have in winter time here in Canada and finding a place to train where the terrain is not just ice or a big pile of snow is a challenge!!Thx!!💪

One of the issues for me is that in the morning the body does not feel at its best. It feels stiff, maybe with some pain and I am not sure if a stretching routine or any other warming up could help. I think this may be an issue for older people. In the evening the body feels warmer and ισ ready to exercise, so I tend to do it around 6-7pm.
