I find myself in an Afrikaans-speaking area, but I am at a stage with my Dutch when it is not yet fluent and I am concerned that the two very similar languages will interfere with each other. Was this true for you with, say, Portugese and Spanish? Any advice? Thanks and best wishes.
@@haroldwood1394 Yeah, when I was learning Italian I started getting it mixed up with Spanish quite often... So I focused exclusively on Italian for a while until I was comfortable with it. That being said every now and then I'll still mix up some vocab here and there but it's surely better than before :)
@New Apollo Man, in all seriousness I've studied more than 25 languages actually. Perhaps 30 to 35. I like to dabble. However, I'm still at a very basic level in many of them - which doesn't bother me, really. In many other ones I'm at higher levels.

I'm from Brazil and is incredible how this time Brazilians want to learn English and other languages. The internet has helped in this change. I speak Spanish and English. I have started learning Russian two months ago. But, the English has the priority. In Brazil and in Portugal we speak the same Portuguese, but person with closed mind want to create "Brazilian language". Like Gabriel said a lot of countries speak Spanish and English and they live in peace.

I used to learn a bunch of languages but I think I rather speak a handful of languages well. However, that’s not to say I wouldn’t still learn some on the side like Japanese, Chinese, and Finnish but with less focus.

Actually, European Portuguese and Russian are both stress-timed languages. And yes, they do have similar characteristics. Plus, there are thousands of Latin-based words in Russian that sound almost identical to the Portuguese equivalent. And I've also studied Russian, so I've noticed these things. PortuguesewithLeo, and the Langfocus Channel talk about this.
I tested into B1 to Universidade do Porto due to learning Portuguese in Brazil, but when I arrived in Portugal I couldn't understand a word my professor (or anyone else) spoke. But that was in 2017 when there were no materials in European Portuguese online...but it sounded more like French than Brazilian Portuguese. Since now in 2021 we have a lot of European Portuguese materials online, I'd say definitely choose which version of Portuguese you want to focus on early (and, yes, there are many dialects in both European & Brazilian Portuguese, but by and large, the hugest differences in pronunciation are between the different countries).

The discussion of various accents and regional varieties of a language at 9:20 is essentially why I don't believe learners can sound like a native nor will I understand why people obsess over such a goal. The closest anyone can get is sounding like a local because locals from two different areas will sound different despite being natives of a given language like Spanish, Portuguese, or even English and Arabic. Language is about mutual understanding; as long as that's established, who cares about perfectionism? It just breeds unnecessary toxicity in this community. At the end of the day, forming meaningful connections comes from having your own life first so you can resonating with others in some way. If a common language were all it took, then you can befriend every native of your own language...not very realistic since you most likely won't click with everyone you meet and that's life. Imagine how boring it is to meet someone whose life only revolves around learning languages and they do nothing else. What good is knowing a language if you barely have anything to talk about? Ask your friends why you're friends in the first place and I bet you anything it's not just because of a shared language. It doesn't earn you celebrity treatment; you can speak well and still not get along with some people. You can't expect to get any job abroad just because you speak the language without other skills unless it's minimum wage or being a translator but even they tend to specialize rather than being a jack of all fields, master of none.
If you are learning English, as a native English speaker please don't use "awesome" all the time. Because it is overused and should refer really to experience that are extraordinary: "beauty of the sunset was truly awesome". As opposed to: "my sneakers are just so awesome". British people who use it that aren't American sound really ridiculous in my opinion. Usually they work in skateboard shops or something similar and wear baseball caps, which people in the UK don't tend to do- we don't play baseball and there's no sun.

Pessoalment, gosto de ouvir portuguese europeu, mas posso entender a minha amiga quando ela fala portugues brasileiro. The sounds are way different though so I would suggest listening to both versions and decide how you want to speak after maybe a week? European is just more appealing to my ears because the sounds and rhythm of Brazilian Portuguese is similar to Mexican Spanish I think which is already how my native language sounds like. That being said although I would love to change my English accent to received English, I can't stop watching American shows because that's what we get here in the Ph. So oh well as long as people understand me I could easily switch to different accents to make myself comprehensible to others. the main breakdown would be would you rather say GEE/CHEE or SH I think thats the main difference between them.
Truly, the best example of a polyglot's motivation is you, Steve! I know people ten years younger than you, healthy and well-heeled, but they cannot even remember their phone number. It goes without saying, it's an easy shot for readers, but they even don't have energy to walk.

That’s why I started learning Swedish to connect. I recently connected with an old Swedish friend but he speaks English However, genuinely, I think most people don’t care how many languages you know but that you’re connecting with their culture.
As someone who has been learning Portuguese (Brazilian) for almost 2 years now, I can confirm brazillian Portuguese sounds like Russian to someone who doesn't know it. I am STILL struggling with.. well everything.. but mostly listening comprehension.. I can easily tell European Portuguese cause I purposefully ignore it.. What I've heard I haven't liked.. but I'm a bit biased since I'm learning specifically Rio accent the most, although all of brazil.. either what European Portuguese is sooo much harder and Brazilian Portuguese is already super tough.. especially as a first language..
I greatly admire polyglots as I struggle for fluency in several languages with disappointing results. Furthermore, I am impressed that some learn English so well as to be practically indistinguishable from native speakers, but perplexed that such familiarity expresses itself in illogical, though currently popular, constructions such as the use of “am like” for “think”, “was like” for “said”, etc. I am old, so I consider such habits a detriment to clear, concise speech, not to mention a distraction. Sorry, I don’t mean to be overly critical or rude.

China is like Europe infosar that neighboring regions speak different languages. “Chinese” is no more of a language than “European” is a language. Southeastern China has like 50+ different Sinitic languages alone. Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, Fuchow, Hinghua, Wenzhounese, Ningbo, Shanghainese, etc. Many huge languages with long histories, and VERY many smaller languages also with rich histories
European Portuguese sounds like a different language than Brazilian Portuguese. European Portuguese is a stress timed language with a lot of “sh” sounds. And European Portuguese speakers tend to “eat” their vowels. All this makes it resemble a Slavic language. Brazilian Portuguese on the other hand is more musical sounding with clearer enunciation, which makes it easier for a beginner learner to learn. This is likely the reason why Duolingo only offers a Brazilian Portuguese course and not European Portuguese.
Did you either learn any African Languages? Swahili from East Africa and parts of Central Africa. Wolof from Senegal/Gambia?Arabic from Maghreb area and North Africa.
I think we may have Swahili in the works, in other words somebody is volunteering to do the mini stories. If that is the case we will upload Swahili once LingQ 5.0 is fully launched. If someone volunteers to do the mini stories in other African languages we will also upload those.
I've spent two weeks in Portugal and two in Brazil, and when I speak Portuguese (which is completely rusty by now), I mix up the two accents. I don't think I've picked up the sotaque mineiro (I was in BH) though.
Take a look in how shabby are the books on Steve Kaufman bookshelf, it seems a lot different from those brand new ones from people who buy just to show themselves up!
The different variants of Arabic are more like different languages. They differ from each other the way Spanish French and Portuguese differ from each other. Not the same of course but similar. Nevertheless I am glad that I learned standard Arabic which gives me a good base for learning Egyptian or Levantine Arabic.

xiao ma does that for performance yes. but as a native chinese speaker. he speaks really good chinese. for him to do that it has to be some kind of passion on the language. it's just for the viewers enjoyment. some ppl swivel towards that kind of content. cuz it's a crowd pleaser. for subscription and for viewer ship. but when i need some language learning advice i come to steve. hahah

Pessoalment, gosto de ouvir portuguese europeu, mas posso entender a minha amiga quando ela fala portugues brasileiro. The sounds are way different though so I would suggest listening to both versions and decide how you want to speak after maybe a week? European is just more appealing to my ears because the sounds and rhythm of Brazilian Portuguese is similar to Mexican Spanish I think which is already how my native language sounds like. That being said although I would love to change my English accent to received English, I can't stop watching American shows because that's what we get here in the Ph. So oh well as long as people understand me I could easily switch to different accents to make myself comprehensible to others. the main breakdown would be would you rather say GEE/CHEE or SH I think thats the main difference between them.
Truly, the best example of a polyglot's motivation is you, Steve! I know people ten years younger than you, healthy and well-heeled, but they cannot even remember their phone number. It goes without saying, it's an easy shot for readers, but they even don't have energy to walk.
Steve has a lifestyle that is unusual for many people his age, he reads learns languages, exercises.....most people his age don t do these things...

That’s why I started learning Swedish to connect. I recently connected with an old Swedish friend but he speaks English However, genuinely, I think most people don’t care how many languages you know but that you’re connecting with their culture.
As someone who has been learning Portuguese (Brazilian) for almost 2 years now, I can confirm brazillian Portuguese sounds like Russian to someone who doesn't know it. I am STILL struggling with.. well everything.. but mostly listening comprehension.. I can easily tell European Portuguese cause I purposefully ignore it.. What I've heard I haven't liked.. but I'm a bit biased since I'm learning specifically Rio accent the most, although all of brazil.. either what European Portuguese is sooo much harder and Brazilian Portuguese is already super tough.. especially as a first language..
I greatly admire polyglots as I struggle for fluency in several languages with disappointing results. Furthermore, I am impressed that some learn English so well as to be practically indistinguishable from native speakers, but perplexed that such familiarity expresses itself in illogical, though currently popular, constructions such as the use of “am like” for “think”, “was like” for “said”, etc. I am old, so I consider such habits a detriment to clear, concise speech, not to mention a distraction. Sorry, I don’t mean to be overly critical or rude.
I love the idea of connecting with people from all different places and cultures. When I was in college, a professor of mine put this quote on the board and it really just got into my soul.

China is like Europe infosar that neighboring regions speak different languages. “Chinese” is no more of a language than “European” is a language. Southeastern China has like 50+ different Sinitic languages alone. Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, Fuchow, Hinghua, Wenzhounese, Ningbo, Shanghainese, etc. Many huge languages with long histories, and VERY many smaller languages also with rich histories

European Portuguese sounds like a different language than Brazilian Portuguese. European Portuguese is a stress timed language with a lot of “sh” sounds. And European Portuguese speakers tend to “eat” their vowels. All this makes it resemble a Slavic language. Brazilian Portuguese on the other hand is more musical sounding with clearer enunciation, which makes it easier for a beginner learner to learn. This is likely the reason why Duolingo only offers a Brazilian Portuguese course and not European Portuguese.
Did you either learn any African Languages? Swahili from East Africa and parts of Central Africa. Wolof from Senegal/Gambia?Arabic from Maghreb area and North Africa.
I think we may have Swahili in the works, in other words somebody is volunteering to do the mini stories. If that is the case we will upload Swahili once LingQ 5.0 is fully launched. If someone volunteers to do the mini stories in other African languages we will also upload those.
I've spent two weeks in Portugal and two in Brazil, and when I speak Portuguese (which is completely rusty by now), I mix up the two accents. I don't think I've picked up the sotaque mineiro (I was in BH) though.

In that case, I don't think so.
The different variants of Arabic are more like different languages. They differ from each other the way Spanish French and Portuguese differ from each other. Not the same of course but similar. Nevertheless I am glad that I learned standard Arabic which gives me a good base for learning Egyptian or Levantine Arabic.
