Right now I'm doing exactly that! My main language now is Chinese (since I wanna reach a C1 by the end of this year), and my minor language at the moment is Tagalog.
I have experimented and I think that 2 languages max works for me, specially when I have clear goals. But whoring out by studying many different languages at once can be very fun, so it depends on what you want, results or linguistic exploration.

I am learning three languages at the moment: Polish and Croatian for my work (both at B1 level) and a little bit of Turkish (A1) for fun. Learning two closely related languages is like cooking two soups in the same pot, trying not to get them mixed. However, I have noticed that it is very helpful to use a different method for Croatian, compared with the one(s) that I use for Polish. I would love to hear experiences from others who have studied two closely related languages at the same time.

Awesome mate! What is I personally do is try to keep them at different levels, so like I wouldn't start two close languages at the same time from scratch, I'd get one to an A2 or B1 level then I'll start adding in the other one and do them both daily, or as much as I can, I take some days off from time to time, especially when my heard is hurting from making new synapses. Oh and another thing that's cool about learning 2 at the same is that if you get bored with one or aren't quite making the progress you want you focus on the other and give it some rest for a while then, I somehow find even more motivation to go back the the first one its a weird cycle but I love it.

Is learning two languages at the same time a good idea? It depends on how much time you have and how much progress you will make. If you want to become fluent in a foreign language, then that is going to take a lot of committment and time. Also, I'm sure that you want to make lots of progress. If you try to learn two languages at the same time and you are not making that much progress, then stick with one language.

Another great video of yours! Learning two languages at the same time is possible of course. But the progress is the half... unless you don’t work and are paid to learn languages 🤗 but there is not a confusion in our brain when we do it or anything like this. I did it already but I don’t do it anymore. One language at a time. Professor X here. Stay safe.

But know I’ve finally figured it out and my Spanish has improved so much within the last few days. And know I have a lot of confidence to start another language (Chinese lookin reallll nice) but this video made me realize I don’t have to aim for fluency in every language. I can be a polyglot and not be fluent in every language.

Totally agree. I think language learning can be analogous to sports. Should we just do one sport at a time to make faster progress? For most people life is a richer experience with diversity. Also even if we try to learn just one new language at a time, is that a reality if we have already learnt a different foreign language?, at what point are we only maintaining other languages rather than enhancing our knowledge in them. Do we define that as no longer learning/perfecting grammar or vocab or more native skills e.g.colloquialisms or accent . So I think if we already know a different foreign language we will effectively still be learning in those languages but at a much slower pace unless we don't use those previously learnt languages at all but that would be crazy to just let them slip.

I started revising French eight months ago, and I’m now a good B2 level and can understand native podcasts. I started German from scratch two months ago, I’m supposedly low B1 now, more like A2. It works, I don’t worry about not speaking German yet, I have no rush, I can enjoy the process because French gives me lots of reward. If my French was poor, I’d rather not do German, just focus on the French.

Welsh pronounciation is easy for English people, and the writing is phonetic. They also speak clearly. Lots of words are shared with Latinate languages eg ysgol (school, French école), pont (bridge, French le pont), ysgrifennu (to write cf scribble, French écrire) and so on.

I found that learning a different language every three months has helped me to focus better and not get burned out. I studied Spanish very intensely for three months, then German, then Greek, & now Swahili. Then back to Spanish etc. I had already studied Spanish very heavily in the past & then Ancient Greek. German & Swahili are new adventures for me. I found I was burned out on Spanish and Greek. So far I'm really growing in my new languages & will fell ready for Spanish when it comes time to refocus on it.

I've been learning three languages for a while and I felt a bit frustrated because I wasn't making progress. i do work full time and have other commitments too (although not during lockdown ). I was ahead on one of the languages, so I just kind of did passive learning with that and focussed on the other two mainly. Finally, I'm getting somewhere this last week. I'm only learning languages to be able to speak to people in my environment - working in a shop, speaking with my neighbours etc. And of course, the culture.
BUT, being a learning addict, I try to maintain previously learned languages. I've seen lockdown as an opportunity to do Italki lessons. In May, I did 7 different languages some just to keep up the level. Serious dabbler here!

I think I don't have problems with two languages, - if one of them is on a level high enough to just use it! My English is somewhat between B and C, I think. Not so good in speaking, but better in the other abilities. I can watch videos, read novels for native speakers or write in English, and my daily conversations in German help me to avoid loosing my mother tongue. 😉 The only "classroom activities" I still do for English is enjoying approximately 2 English lessons on RUclips a week, just because there are some incredible teachers. And of course, it doesn't harm to have, for example, another grammar explanation - although I'll never learn to think about things like 'Does the action in the past have a consequence for the presence' whilst speaking, and if I would, I would end up in breeding over it for minutes, then coming back with the message: 'Well, *every* action in the past had made the presence as it is.' or something like that. 🤣
*Improving* a language doesn't collide with *learning* a second language. I had the theory that I can learn a third language on a A0 level - just play around and get used to it, learn the script and such stuff. Just to have a break from really working on the second language until it's on a level that I can use it for doing other things than language learning. I still think the theory is good, but my feelings definitely doesn't fit in. I have a lot of fun with the "language for hard work" and always had to force me to switch to the "just playing around" language. I changed the third from a difficult to a really easy one, but it made no difference. Seems as if the only thing I really learn by treating a language that way is to hate it! Some days ago I decided to stop learning any third language because it seems that I'm not open for it now. Or... perhaps... Knowing a little Farsi would be great for my job...! Although communicating with hands and face is also a good way to get in contact, and this way I'm perhaps a better motivator for learning German for the refugees I sometimes have to look after.

Any thoughts on icelandic and Norwegian at the same time. Would it be more confusing then Spanish and icelandic the icelandic would be the 80%

Do you think the "acquisition circuits" in the brain need continuous stimulus? By that I mean that once you're fairly fluent in language A, the rate of acquisition necessarily drops, so could starting with language B get those acquisition circuits going again and help with the acquisition of language A? Of course you'd have to keep getting input in the first language but could you increase the rate of acquisition in language A?

It seems like a wise idea, but I still think it's a bad idea cuz you won't be able two keep it up. Unless you have something better to do!
