    1973 was the last year for the 455 in a GTO. In 1974, the last year the GTO was available, it went to the Pontiac Ventura body and the biggest engine was a 350 Pontiac. That 73 is a very unique car, it was the only GTO in the 73-77 "Colonnade style" A body, and it was the last year of the 455 in a GTO. In 1974 Pontiac went with the new Grand Am name in the A body "colonnade style" body. It was basically the same car the 73 GTO was but with a different name and front facia.

    • @grand73am
      @grand73am Год назад +3

      73 was the first year for the Grand Am. Pontiac promoted the new 73 Grand Am more than the 73 GTO, so they sold only 4806 GTO's in 73, while they sold over 40,000 Grand Ams. Both cars were based on the 73 Lemans body of course. However there were more differences between the Grand Am and the GTO than just the name and the front nose. The GTO was basically a Lemans, keeping the Lemans nose, but with blacked out grilles, and GTO emblem and decals. It still had the Lemans interior and dash, but with little GTO emblems on the upper door panels. The Grand Am of course had the more aerodynamic soft nose, plus it had an upscale interior including special front seats that reclined with lumber support adjustment, along with more luxious door panels, and the Grand Prix dash. Grand Am also got the headlight dimmer on the steering column, which was something new for American cars at the time. The GTO got the scooped hood as standard equipment, whereas it was only optional on the Grand Am. The Grand Am got "radial tuned suspension" and was one of the first few GM models that came with radial tires as standard equipment. The GTO still came with bias ply tires, but it did come with a bigger 1" rear sway bar, while the Grand Am had a 7/8" rear bar. And the Grand Am got some extra chrome trim on the tail light lenses, while the GTO got the regular Lemans lenses.

      Beautiful Ride! Unique is the word. I recently purchased a 1973 Pontiac GRANDAM 4 speed Muncie bored out to a 455 . I just added headers and an aggressive muffler with an H pipe. Florentine Red color. Took it out Sunday with my 2 sons and they loved the feel of the big muscle sound plus the power they never felt before. I’m glad I found one in a 4 speed. Thanks for sharing

    I mean come on, just look at it, those lines and sharp angles along with the classic Cragar S/S's then the fact that it's a 455 4 speed factory car in black, hot damn!!!!!! What's not to love except that its not parked in my driveway!?!
    What a beautiful gem!congratulations!
    Thanks for sharing your beauty with us!!!!!
    I hear you about why Poncho didn't put the 455 S.D. in it nor celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Goat either at the time. But as you said, the muscle car then,was unfortunately dead and dirt getting shoveled on the coffin lid.
    From what I've read, the Super Duty was hand built in house and another unfortunate happening was Pontiac couldn't keep up with the demand for the engine, the expense of it and also the theft from the employees in the factory of all of the engine parts!!! Finally Poncho heads said Enough!!! And pulled the plug on the Super Beast,and the rest is history. Thanks again for sharing this with us and delving deeper into the history of the breed and our beloved hobby,sport,love,life!

I have owned three Pontiacs which I don't have any of them now. I owned a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville with the 389 cubic inch had the original Carter 4 Barrel on it and this car for 65 was loaded it had power windows power locks power truck power seats AC power antenna this car was loaded for 1965. I also owned a 1972 Pontiac GTO and a 1988 Pontiac GTA with the 350 TPI engine which is hard to find because most of them were produced with a 305 TPI I miss all my rides.

    Standard wheels on the 73 GTO would've been plain steel wheels with "moon" type hubcaps. Rallys or Honeycombs were optional. Also the bumper guards and rubber bumper strips were optional accessories. Standard was just plain chrome bumpers. Or you could get the bumpers with just the rubber strips only, without guards.Or you could get the optional guards to go with the strips, like this car has. They make the bumpers look much better. In 73, the front bumper was the 5 mph impact bumper that was required that year. It uses bumper shocks. The rear bumper was a 2.5 mph bumper...no bumper shocks. In 74, the rear bumper was upgraded to a 5 mph bumper with bumper shocks too. Also, I noticed somebody mentioned it already, but the 455 didn't come with a 4 speed in the 73 GTO (or other Lemans bodied cars) from the factory. The best you could do was a 400 with a 4 speed. So, the 455 only came with an automatic. The previous poster (josephswiderski8755) must be the owner because he said his research has revealed that the car was originally an automatic.

    Pontiac last used the 455 in the '76 Trans Am, 75 in the Grand Am and officially 74 in the LeMans. That said I was the second owner of a '75 LeMans Sport Coupe with a 455 that according to the emissions sticker was stock. I bought it in '77 from a Pontiac dealer in Florida who took it as a trade in on a new car. A couple of years later it got totaled in a head on collision and the 455 ended up going into a GMC pickup.

But loved the automatic transmission with the shift kit a lot too. My thinking was if you lost a race by second's It may not have been the motor. It was the seconds in changing gears that would make the difference. My granddad would say that darn light comes on and says shift. 😤 I know when to shift !! 🤣🤣 I want to say ,it all in the timing . But he would have said that's right on the money. Ha I head the vale's rattle a second . He said it was the low octane gas. Us old timers learned even when we didn't know it. How do you teach a old dog new tricks when they already know them all. 😂😂😂

    Very scarce car indeed. Back in '73 I bought an Olds 442 with 455 under the hood. It is also quite scarce today. These big block GM cars were a lot slower than those a few years before. But if you compare them to other 1973 cars they were pretty quick. The fastest was the 455 SD in the trans-am , formula firebirds. A 250 hp 455 was available in the grand prixsj. '74s had a bit less hp. Then starting in '75 the hp kept getting lower for quite a few years ahead.

      Again, the 1973 GTO option was offered on two models including the base LeMans coupe or the LeMans Sport Coupe. The base LeMans coupe featured a cloth-and-vinyl or all-vinyl bench seat while the more lavish LeMans Sport Coupe had all-vinyl interiors with Strato bucket seats or a notchback bench seat with folding armrest. The LeMans Sport Coupe also had louvered rear side windows from the Grand Am in place of the standard triangular windows of the base LeMans.
      The standard 400 in³ V8 in the 1973 GTO was further reduced in compression to 8.0:1, dropping it to 230 hp (170 kW). The 400 engine was available with any of the three transmissions including the standard three-speed manual, or optional four-speed or Turbo Hydra-Matic. The 455 in³ V8 remained optional but was dropped to 250 hp (186 kW) and available only with the Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission. The 455 HO engine did not reappear, but GM initially announced the availability of a Super Duty 455 engine (shared with the contemporary Pontiac Trans Am SD455), and several such cars were made available for testing, impressing reviewers with their power and flexibility. Nevertheless, the Super Duty was never actually offered for public sale in the GTO.
      Sales dropped to 4,806, thanks in part to competition from the new Grand Am and the lack of promotion for the GTO. By the end of the model year an emerging energy crisis quashed consumer interest in muscle cars.
