- Discover the Romanov palaces of St Petersburg, which remain scattered throughout the city of St Petersburg today. Embellished with gold yet plagued with whispers of conspiracy and insurrection, these numerous palaces offer valuable insight into the rise and fall of one of the world’s greatest empires.
The Bolsheviks would be turning in their graves to hear us say it, but the House of Romanov laid the foundations of St Petersburg with that indelible magnificence of the early Russian Empire. The city’s patron and namesake, Peter the Great, became Russia’s first emperor in 1721, and his lineage was responsible for the architectural development of St Petersburg for almost 200 years thereafter.

I was in Russia in October 2019 and visited all those palaces. The gardens and fountains of Peterhoff are absolutely breathtaking, especially the main fountain which water ends in the Finland strait. I also visited the Faberge Museum and the Yusupov palace where Rasputin was killed. Unfortunately in the winter palace the peacock clock was not working. I have over a thousand pictures of this trip. Unforgettable!

A visit to St Petersburg, Russia, should be on everyone’s bucket list. Must be seen to be believed.
The Germans’ destruction of that palace should have listed as another one of their war crimes.

I lived in St Petersburg back in 1992, and remember fondly visiting several of these palaces....especially Catherine's Palace in Pushkin. When I lived there, I was captivated by the history of the city during the Siege, and as such, when walking the rooms of the Catherine palace, I was struck that 50 years ago (this was in 1992), those very rooms were occupied by German soldiers who were there to ensure the utter destruction of Leningrad and everyone who lived there. It was a very somber realization. Walking that palace, it's hard to believe it is an almost complete reconstruction....as, as was mentioned in the video, the Germans virtually destroyed it when they retreated. They would have destroyed the palace completely, but a bomb they left behind (500 pounds) failed to detonate.

I'm so excited about the restoration of the Alexander Palace and its interiors. Everyone will love Alexandra's Maple Drawing Room, for example. Yes, the originals are gone forever, but when you look at those rooms, it almost makes you feel like they were never really gone because the accuracy to the originals is stunning.

I take it you appreciate the beauty, and i can understand that, in isolation. But put it into context. Don't forget the true human cost of creating these works of art. Don't praise the royals, praise the peasants whose suffering truly created these works of art.
@@MarySmith-gu5nb All of it goes hand in hand so there's that. The people loved the Romanovs and Catherine the Great did a lot for the Russia. The Bolsheviks sadly killed *millions* of Russians (and Ukrainians) when they came in charge but that too is apart of Russian history and all ties together which makes Russian history even more fascinating because of their will to survive and bounce back and Russian strength. That's like suggesting the Titanic was a hunk of junk and should just be forgotten in history because Irish peasants built it for rich companies.
If the world returns to some normal ... I’m going to St Petersburg as well as the Winter Palace Tsarselov. As a retired Delta flight attendant, this had been my dream for over 40 years. I retired just as Delta started flights to Moscow. People used to take travel for granted ✈️ before restrictions.
I’m very lucky to have my standby almost free Delta travel benefits. They mean more to me than a pension. Travel is my healthy & happy addiction.

@@pogonaVisitor you're right, that they cannot be faulted for what they were born into. What they are faulted for is believing the hype and exacerbating the situation. Nickie and alix truly believed it was the Will of God for them to rule Russia. They therefore had no accountability to anyone else.
Consider their imperial lives. They maintained a staff of 50 seamstresses to do nothing but sew, embroider and embellish their clothing. They had a car garage built to house the world's large auto collection (57 cars) at a time when cars were impossibly expensive and only starting to be manufactured. In 1911, nicky had the palaces at Livadia torn down (and they were architectural masterpieces, only 50 years old), to build HIS preferred palace at livadia. At a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars in today's money. He was doing this at a time when ordinary russians were starving and dying of sickness and poverty. They amassed more precious jewels than all the other monarchies of Europe combined. They were drunk with selfish abandon.
For all of this and more (disastrous wars, horrible political policies and the Duma, more too numerous to go into here), they CAN be faulted. They were the ugliest sort of entitlement and did not care about the little guy, even at the end, sewing jewels into their clothing.
No pity, no empathy from me. Horrible people.

Russian artwork has always fascinated me. Their woodworking is stunning as well. Even their classical musicals.
And literature.
Absolutely stunning. Russian art was at it's height during those years. What terrible destruction was done by the Germans.

Architecture like this is so unfathomably beautiful. The fact that we humans have the power and glory in our hands to craft some thing this remarkable is remarkable within itself. So much more intriguing and romantic than the likes of today’s architecture.

These beautiful palaces are monuments to the people who built them . They are magnificent. The Nazis in WW11 why on earth did they destroy this beautiful place. Now restored and they are all dead. The craftsmen who did all of these glorious places now we can all see forever. Thankyou.

Ironic that the Nikolas and Alexandra royal family, themselves, had no interest in massive residences, and always lived in small apartments within them. Despite the palacial grandeur, their kids were brought up in rather austere conditions - which has parallels to the child-rearing policies of some of the British royal families around those times. This all makes sense when you consider that Alex was Queen Victoria's grand-daughter; and though equally fluent in her native German, her first mother tongue was English. The OTMA girls and Alexei were cared for by proper English nannies.
Actually OTMA to the English Kings horror on a visit was said to speak English with an Irish accent due to thier Irish nannie.

The tragedy of Nickolas II and his family was the making of of the entire Romanov dynasty since the beginning. Every Tsar of Russia were cruel rulers and
had no real feelings for the ordinary folk of Russia. That resulted to the Bolshevik revolution. It was the revenge of the Russian people against the oppression of the Romanov dynasty for more than 300 years. Let it be a lesson for our
present day leaders.

Nah, thats not why they were murdered. For the past two generations, both of their russian leaders were great until nicholas II. He even acknowledged he had no experience leading and didnt want to inherit the power, but had to anyways. He was initially suppose to be murdered so they could overthrow him (even though it was conpletely unnecessary ), the economy kind of failed after the war that went on, but it was the event called "Bloody sunday" that motivated the british army (i believe) to kill them. Killing the children though was absolutely unnecessary. I do believe that anastasia and her brother got away just with stab and gunshot wounds, considering they didnt discover their bodies until decades later, and they were buried distantly from the other graves.

These palaces were built to extreme excess, while peasants starved and froze to death. The romanovs, in power during this 300 years, KNEW that and didn't care. Peasants were an inexhaustable resource as far as they wete concerned.
Not saying they deserved execution. I would have preferred to see them lead the lives of the poorest peasantry. Hard labor till they all died of communicable diseases or exhaustion.
Very true and terrible! The emperors/empresses treated the peasents like commodities and gave them as presents to their lovers, at least Catherine the Great. Thousands died building St. Petersburg, living and working in terrible conditions. But the results were what expected.
Much worse punishment i think.But i suppose if they have lived they would have tried to bring back monarchy one day them or their descendants.I can see it in Greece.We abolished monarchy exiled the king and his family forbade them to visit Greece.First of all ex king sued Greek state in the European courts for the land he supposedly owed in the country and took 13 Million as a compensation from the state aka the Greek people.Second he still goes around as King of Greece and his descendants as princes and princesses of Greece.And third he is now living in Greece ,he and his second son ( our pro royalist corrupted politicians permitted it).
But he never denounced his title.He is keeping a low profile and the family also,but I know that deep inside them they are wishing for some day they will rule again.

THEY did not, even in the face of peasant rebellion, try to secret away precious jewels in their clothing. Think of that. Anything was preferable to having to live as ordinary people.
ALL of aristocracy has behaved this way. King Edward backed off on his offer to give them safe harbor in England because he was afraid of being rebelled against by his own peasants. Think about what that means! He was willing to let his own family members be executed by rabble-rousers rather than give up any facet of his own privilege. His wealth was important to him than even his family.

@@joan22 no one is saying their communist successors were good or even less corrupt. They were, after all, unprepared for the task. Lenin never dreamed he would see the day the revolution came to pass and said so frequently in his writings.
The point is, the communist rebellion was not worse than what these oligarchs inflicted on their subjects, with apparently complete obliviousness to their suffering.
