I was at this gig with three or my mates it at the pavillion baltard, we decided to go none of us had much money no tickets for any thing jumped the train down to the coast got the hovercraft across to france train to paris found our way to the place no tickets, wellers old man came out let us go in for the sound check stayed there for the gig as well, we were 17 and 18 year olds you couldnt get away with it today two days no sleep no food hardly no money , happy days
I was there too 8 coaches went from London, let us in for sound check too, then paul bruce and rick came on each coach at end to thank us for coming signing autographs etc those were the days
I was the the kid that (inadvertently) started all the violence. I was only sixteen, I was sitting on the stairs at the interval when the some quite older French skinhead looking blokes beckoned me over, I thought to talk. Then they started shouting at me in French, then some older English lads started getting in the face of the French men and then French thugs pulled out an iron bar and and a belt made up of spent gun cartridges and they tried to hit us. I slinked away fearing for my life but another bloke got his head bashed in (he later returned much to everyone’s relief). And then when The Jam came on, it all kicked off again. The only person concerned with our safety was Bruce Foxton, he kept yelling for the security. Thank you Bruce for caring about us. All of it was a bit too much. I just wanted to listen to some live music.
The brits were searched the fucking frogs were allowed in with chains and sticks but we kicked there fucking arses Paul and Bruce ripped into the french cuntspaul hung a union jack on his mike stand...the following year not 4 coaches but 20 and the uk boys took Paris do not fuck with the Jam boys
Great gig , i remember 9 or 10 coach loads of us from london going over for this Paris gig, organised by Pauls dad, John. Turned out a load of French Oi Skin/Punks were tooled up and spoiling for a ruck, hence Weller tied a British Flag to his mic in anger at the morons. Jam played a great set , and John made sure all the fans boarded back safe too...
Totally agree how some shit bands became huge in the states but others never made it. Big Country are another great live band that spring to mind and never made it in States.
I was 17 and had to get permission from my parents to go. I remember what seemed like riots to me in the streets after the gig. I was on the first coach to 'get away'. Someone threw a bottle through the coach window where I was sat. It was a very cold journey home. Coming from a small town in Hampshire it was quite an eye opener for me. I think I saw The Jam 10 times that year but that was definitely the most memorable.
This was the loudest the Jam ever played. I was deaf for 3 days, I truly thought my hearing would never come back. The P.A. was insane. You cant tell on here but if you see photos of the speakers it was incredible. I noticed at the exhibition in Liverpool that there was a note to the crew to only take into venues the amount of gear that was needed and not to go 'over the top'. They usually took no notice
i seen the jam in '82' at the aragon ballroom in chicago(we used to call it the brawlroom)weller does mention it on the back of live album'dig the new breed' yes some of us yanks do love the jam
Hey i was there as well, fantastic,i was only 15/16,told me mum i was going to a m8s for the night, lol we travelled all the way there on the coaches, maybe about 10 coaches went, bout 50 on each?Best concert i ever went, this was the one played in a circus tent, due to the original being firebombed.Great memories, glad someone else out there who went has posted, give us your memories!!!
Remember sat in a cafe watching a Citroen 2CV being torched accross the road from us, then the Paris fire brigade turned up and didn't have a clue what they were doing, all seemed a bit like a Keystone Cops film. Had one of the coach windows put through after the gig. Long trip but the band were brilliant as usual,
I remember that scene too. Im my memory serves me right, it happened when a fistful of french skinheads ran away to escape from angry brits who decided to teach them better manners. They sheltered in the car, tried to start the engine but failed. As a result, they ended up with a bunch of brits shaking the 2 CV like crazy. Didn't watch the end of it, but really, these brits made my day ! French skinheads in Paris were such a pain in the ass at that time...
neil: thank you for posting this! it's the middle of the night and I just came across this ... had no idea it existed, brilliant! saw 'em twice - new york & boston in '82 - and got backstage both times. meeting and talking to weller - he's just 20 here! - is one of my life's high points. cheers!
Such a pity that Paul Weller broke up the the Jam and left for some other stylishless projects. The Weller-Foxton-Buckler team was truly brilliant and to me one of five best UK band trough all times. The aggressive rock-punk-mods crossover style with Weller’s genius lyrics together with the prominent and melodic bass of the master Foxton made the Jam totally unique and so interesting. It is almost the same kind of magic that Waters and Gilmore produced when together in Pink Floyd but in a different genre. What kind of brilliance would have come out of this band if they had made two-three more records!? Hard to think they had reached the end of their capacity when they broke up. Weller’s (and the others) productions after the Jam was really nothing in comparison. And this Paris concert was really a pearl, thanks so much for uploading!!!
Saw the gig and travel arrangements advertised in the NME a bit late so we went down to the address that was advertised and it turned out to be John and Ann Weller's house in Woking, they were a bit surprised, but sold us some tickets and I must say very hospitable given a bunch of unknowns turning up on their door step. Trip was great although the gig had a tense atmosphere, Got surrounded by French yobs who thought the A on my American Army coat stood for Anarchy just avoided good kicking
thanks paul for tying the union jack to your mike standafter trouble with french skins even if we stood our ground paris paid the next year when 30 coaches of mods went over
It's not from the Sound Affects tour; Weller had short hair on that particular tour. Saw them in Brighton and a few other places, Portsmouth included, all fantastic.
Saw this live and outside was like a war zone with overturned cars and fighting between English and French hooligans.Half of our coach didn't make it back to Victoria coach station.
Yeah, this gig was prob the most memorable for me too , along with the first jam gig i attended, at the lyceum in london early 78, which was superb, but marred with some probs in the tube station after.Still went to see them whenever they were in london, worse gig for violence though ,was after a gig at the rainbow, when a load of morons started throwing fire safety bottles, buckets ,and anything they could get their hands on into the train carriages and fighting. despite this, saw some great gigs.
I don't believe this one is from 1981. It looks to be from Sound Affects tour, 1980, they play a few tracks from Sound Affects and the rest were from All Mod Cons and Setting Sons. I could be wrong though.
Apart from the obvious, by that i mean The Jam just being cool as fuck and generally fuckin excellent, it's also a really good quality video. Quite a few bands from that era and that scene were filmed when they played in france and the quality of the production is brilliant, generally it's much better than any live footage that i've ever seen shot in the uk. There's video on utube of the Ruts live in paris & it's fucking amazing, admitedly, the gig in question was shot for french TV but we didn
apols for late reply funny your saying that because i bought a JAM video years ago (bootleg) & im sure thr was footage from paris...snippets & very poor quality! keep the faith

Seeing this band reunite would blow my fucking mind.
Fantastic, just fantastic
A criminally underrated band, especially in America....They are BRILLIANT!!! 🇬🇧🎸🇬🇧🎸🇬🇧🎸🇬🇧🎸🇬🇧
Massive in Britain.

Fookin love this 😍
Insane definitely my favourite band !
Great song by Ray Davies, of The Kinks. True Punks.
i seen the jam in '82' at the aragon ballroom in chicago(we used to call it the brawlroom)weller does mention it on the back of live album'dig the new breed' yes some of us yanks do love the jam
oh yeah been to the BrawLroom for so many shows in the 80s. PoLice, XTC, Cure, Furs, CLash. Missed the Jam though
@@ESutcliffe1 Chicago got all of the cool bands whereas Louisville got the short end of the stick in regards to that.
Interesting to hear Bruces vocal up so high in the mix. Gives a bit of different sound.
Was at the Paris Gig,when they played in a tent
+Kevin Harkens Thank you.
Saw em liverpool that autum just before the end Brilliant
Me too. That was my first ever gig. Down the front at the Royal Court.

12:43 = The Residents' Simple Song from the One Minute Movies. Interesting break bumper
Lol
wow thanks for posting this i'm from chicago seen this band in (82} talked to buckler after the show the the fuckin jam y ears are still ringing

It's good to break up at your peak. Takes nerve and insight to do so.

Cool looking Ric held by Paul.
I sweat watching Weller's passion when he sings

@happydaystoytown71 this is the only clip ive got ,the only full gig ive got is the bingley hall gig
I bet Weller was pretty pissed off that Foxtons microphone was louder than his
+Darren Noyce you do a minor service pointing out the petty.
+Kevin Harkens Foxton's hair style sucks as well!!!!
Well(er) I'm pissed that Foxtons mic is louder
Did Bowie no harm, but then he was ten years earlier and first! And it was orange! Foxton's is just a mullet.
love Bruces supporting vocals but Paul was the lead
I just invented a new guitar chord falling down the stairs it's called Z 7th diminished half flat.
