Post-millennium consoles being considered retro is a strong gut punch

"Nothing too crazy" is ironic, considering it's _Korone_ and _Polka_ we are talking about.
- The Wii is now 2 years older than the SNES was when the Wii first came out (18 years vs 16 years).

Let's add fuel to the fire: Gameboy advance was 3 years old when Nintendo DS released, 5 years old when Wii was released, 10 years old when 3ds was released, 15 years old when the switch was released.
( 23 years Vs 20 years Vs 18 Years Vs 10 years Vs 7 years)
The PS2 was 1 year older than the Gameboy advance, and Sora started streaming the same year the Switch was released.
0:59 By that definition, PS3 is also retro now. It is two decades old.
Wtf
Ps vita and 3ds are now retro consoles too

@@Kaitou1412FangirlWe can definitely say it's retro. It's older than the SNES was when it originally released, and the SNES was already considered retro when the PS3, Wii and 360 first came out.

Waiting for the Korone fanart with the Sanae dialogue about retro games
Is that a 2hu reference I see?

Funny enough Korone and Sanae might be of similae age as of now, with Korone being ahead for a wee bit.
Hell, the NES I considered to be retro by the time the N64/PS1 era started. But then again, the power gap between those consoles was absolutely enormous.
Here's a scary thought: If we consider the NES to be retro when the N64 came out, then by that logic the PS4 and WiiU are retro.
@@kyuven tbh there's not much visible change between PS4 to PS5 other than QoL. Meanwhile N64/PS1 literally add new dimension so that the transition from previous generation can be greatly felt.
@@kyuven my logic is more connected to the power of the console itself in relation to current gens. So I consider N64/PS1 to be retro now, though PS2 is on the edge for me.
@@KoboldGamerto be fair gaming has reached the point in which it's difficult to go more realistic and indie games used bit level graphics.

Reminds me of the pain when I hear some of my favorite 2000s anime like Death Note and Lucky Star being enthusiastically called "retro anime" without even a hint of irony.
Oof
That was a the wake-up call for not only her but a lot of people just had to realization that "oh my God I'm old" I caught the tail end of the PS2 but even the PS3 is considered retro now and that makes me feel really old and I'm not even in my mid-twenties.
I love that she thinks about the PC Engine before the Famicom.
360 is as old now as the Nes was when the 360 came out.
it's over...
My uncle got me a "PC Engine" when I was a few years old. Here in the states they were called "Turbo Graphics 16". I had a Bomberman game, a basketball game, and a game called Keith Courage in the Alpha Zones. Which was def. a Japanese influenced title. Side scrolled platformer where you would suit up in a mech suit and fight demons.
Games came on a little plastic card with contacts at the end, that you would slide into the console. Not many people I have ever talked to even knew that console existed.
That's because it obviously didn't sell well outside of Japan. I know more about the PC Engine than the Turbo Graphics 16.
Oh, that was the PC engine? I've only seen it when AVGN talked about Street Fighter. It seems pretty interesting.
@@volbla It was a nice little system (From what 4 year old me can remember). I honestly miss that Bomberman game, and wish I could emulate it.
It was also a lot easier to get your games to work. Much slimmer than the NES (Which was the other console in our house at the time), and there was minimal to no problems plugging and playing. (Whereas I remember fighting with some NES games to even get them to start.)
PC engine was huge in Japan.
The games coming on cards was kind of cute, but honestly I don't remember ANY of the games of that console. I assume it really didn't have any "killer games".
That's a good shorthand, actually. Anything before HDMI became the standard is considered "retro".
That would put the cutoff at Wii/360/PS3.
Edit: to be clear, I was including the Wii/360/PS3 as "retro" because when they launched, HDMI was available, but not standard.
That's what I was thinking !
Or we can go by the Retronauts standard of everything over 10 years old
The Wii wasn't HD tho
@@PIKMINROCK1 That's not a particularly good standard to use. By that standard, Skyrim and GTA 5 are retro games
@@PIKMINROCK1 Oof no that’s just dumb. Gotta be at least 2 decades I feel.
Today I learned: S-Video (also known as separate video) is an analog video signal format that carries standard-definition video.
It looks much nicer than composite. Pretty close to component video, quality-wise. However, component can carry up to 1080p60 which the S-Video surely can't.
…But that also describes composite video. As well as RF.
The salient point is that it carries luma and chroma signals separately
@@TheGreatAtario Also, it's just the signal type. There are a variety of connectors that can carry it. Koro-san is probably thinking of the F connector, or some other aerial connector, used with traditional coaxial cables.
S-Video was the GOAT back in the day. Great compromise between image quality and availability. Korone is such a real one.
lol considering all of the popular culture korone knows I always felt like she's at least a late 80s or 90s kid. That or she spent her childhood hanging with late 80s/90s kids.
"What is S-Video?"
*[Me crumbling to dust from age]*
Idk why but when I was a kid, I always felt “cool” when I played classic retro games that my parents played back in their days. So the PS2 being considered “retro” now and me having tons of experience playing it in the past makes me feel good in a way lmao.
Excuse me while I go sign up for my senior discount....
Polka: "Whats is S-video cable?"
Korone: "No idea"
Polka: "Understandable have a good day"

you skipped the part where korone brought it up half a second earlier lmao
With the PS2 and Xbox, you can use the far-superior Component cables for 720p in some games and better colors in all games.
She's gonna take you back to the past...
I feel like she would be a fan of that show if it has Japanese subtitles lol
Well of course the PS2 is retro, as are other consoles released 20+ years ago. I think its more-so just funny seeing people's reaction to this fact. I'm sure back around when the sixth generation of consoles came out, there were those older then who were shocked hearing that systems like the Atari 2600 and such were retro.
it is always so wild to hear korone speak and behave and remember she is my age or maybe even slightly older....

"PS2 is retro now"
Aging matt damon meme*
The PS2 launched in Japan over 24 years ago. Also, the PS2 shipped with composite cables. The best video out on an unmodded PS2 is RGB Component. That's good for 1080i.
Polka not knowing what an S Video cable is whereas I still remember RF switches. Composite cables go as far back as the VCR era, the PS3 the first to enter the HDMI era. Some people would now almost consider PS3, and WII entering the retro era of gaming.
Thanks for translating this PolKoro moment! I'm not ready to declare the PS2 retro, but... I must admit it is getting old.
I got a PS2 as a graduation gift in 2002.
Honestly stuff from when I was not allowed to buy alcohol being 'retro' doesn't bother me, I sort of expect that to be 'a long time ago', the stuff that makes me feel old is when I realize things I _actually_ feel only happened a few years ago are from a decade ago, like... The Weeknd's 'Can't Feel My Face'.
Korone + Polka is a duo I want to see so much more of.
That comparison with the separate colored cables is a pretty good separation to what is “retro” or not… so you could also interpret that as if it doesn’t have HDMI or USB C to connect to TVs then it’s pretty retro.
"psychic damage"
yep, me too korone, me too
this hits hard with ps5 pro recent announcement.
Even hearing Gameboy be considered retro is a punch in the gut, I'm not ready to be this old
I think what _feels_ more 'retro' is less dependent on the age and more on what limitations there are on the console in question compared to what we have today.
'Retro' consoles as we understand them definitely includes ones limited to sprites and 2D art.
Once you enter the era of 3D it becomes a question of polygon count where 'low-poly' can be considered retro, however 'low-poly' is a poorly defined term. There's no firm cut-off between a high-poly and low-poly model or environment, just a sliding scale. Even then some low-poly models can be made to look waaay better than high-poly models through the use of texture work and/or advanced shading techniques.
Somewhere in and after the PS3/Xbox 360 era I think we collectively agreed that striving for realism with polygon counts much higher than what was currently available would start putting us in uncanny valley territory. The age of rapid, noticeable enhancements in video rendering hardware and technology was over. Diminishing returns had set in, though some of us wouldn't realize it for another generation or two. You could probably play any number of games made in and after this era and not be able to tell how old it is. They'll never _feel_ 'retro'. They'll just be old.
Unless of course there's some paradigm shift and we're all playing in full dive VR a decade from now.
The newer generation will not be able to appreciate the good stuff from the past. Like PS3, 2 and 1, original Xbox 1, PSP, GameCube, Xbox 360, kinect, gameboy, the list goes on
HOW DARE YOU NOT MENTION MY CHERISHED WII
They definitely could appreciate it - in fact, it's far more accessible now than ever since Mobile emulation is now a thing.
The only thing is that they won't be able to experience the hardware involved, and if you want a dedicated gaming console, there's plenty of more affordable options than buying an ancient gaming console... Like buying a less old console and modding it, like the PSP or 3DS, using an old computer and installing emulators, or getting a prebuilt computer to run the games.
I think what they'll miss out on the most is that those systems were almost all before in game purchases and online everything flooded the world. Back then if you bought a game you owned it and if you wanted more of it you bought the sequel when they released it.
Sounds kinda boomerish.
I say plenty of people from the newer generation appreciate older consoles.
Honestly, accepting the fact that PS2 and in extent, PS3 is now retro changes my thought regarding their current emulation from "IMPOSSIBLE! IT'S LIKE MAGIC" to "ah... it's about time..."
my very first console was a nintendo my favorite console of all time is the PS2, all my fondest childhood memories are now retro, thus is life and the passage of time.
I always thought of "retro" being an era of video games rather than games becoming retro after a certain period of time.
I don't think I'd ever call 7th gen consoles (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360) "retro" even after 20+ years lol
Yeah same, i don't know what you would call ps2 etc though. "Classic" era maybe?
For me it was how the console's graphics looked compared to the current standards that define what "retro" is.
I highly doubt that I'd call the PS5 "retro" even after 20-30 years given that the change in graphics quality have incrementally decreased over the past ten years as big name game devs try to push that photorealistic graphics, but unless a new gaming control scheme is developed in the future I'd like to be proven wrong.
@@isoprops3861 Also a fantastic point. The graphics and technology of games went through such a rapid growth, and have plateaued massively. There honestly isn't that much difference between the ps3 era and thee ps5 era of games in fidelity. Especially when compared to the LEAP from nes to ps2.
N64-PS2 is now the Retro, while those before have moved from Retro to Classic. The next step is Antique.
20 years is considered retro for physical stuff, 15 for digital, so the PS3(2006)/XBOX360(2005) are very much retro. Games like COD:MW2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Early Development Minecraft, and ios game Angry Birds are now retro games. I'm going back to my tomb now.
EDIT: I will say that framing things in eras feels more appropriate since the ten years between the GameCube and SNES aren't the same as the ten years between The Last of Us and its remake "huffing hopium in my tomb".
Yeah, it doesn't really feel right to call a game that is actively popular and frequently updated retro, even if it came out a decade and a half ago.
Oh I just took irrecoverable psychic damage while looking casually at my Dreamcast and PS2 💀
Don't mind me, I'm just withering away from old age here playing a old plug in and play game while I listen to this 💀
I'm from Gen Z and i've always considered retro to be anything before the 3D boom. So anything before Ultima Underworld was retro.
I know Korone is older than me but I remember those cables. I also remember the Sega Genesis. I switched rooms so many times when I was growing up and had to screw that cables into my tv so many times and it took like a minute to do such. The ps2 had the three plugs.
This is why i love Hololive because of members like Korone and Korone herself! Then on the other hand... there's Bae..
Meanwhile Bae doesn't even really understand the Biboo brainrot lol.
To gauge retro, I think about the target demo of new people in videogames. New gamers are usually like 12, so if you showed a 12 year old fortnite kid a console, and they react suprised and impressed that you have an archealogical wonder, then it's retro.
So basically anything pre-2006.
The PS2 is about as old now as the Atari 2600 was when the PS2 came out. (24 years vs. 23 years)
Huh? No... retro consoles are like the NES and SNES right? The PS2 and DS are still pretty new... (brought to you by Sanae)
With the announcement of the Ps5 Pro and how much it costs, I am indeed still and will always be in the camp of "What do youean Ps2 is retro, its still the best console out there"
I believe the only PlayStation that used S-video was the PS2-DVR hybrid called the PSX.

Safe to say that anything that no longer will get games are considered retro. More so after years have passed.
It truly does take a special kind of geek to be aware of the PC Engine 🤣🤣🤣
Same with Korone, what I consider retro is the SNES, Megadrive/Genesis generation or older. Maybe because I'm old lol!
I like the way Korone says "PC Engine."
in my book there has to be a step between current and retro
betamax is still on that step, but weirdly VHS has become retro
To think that a console I was still playing until 2018 before "upgrading" to the PS4 is considered antique.. yup, I am old.

This is literally the touhou meme of "No retro is SNES and NES right? The Playstation 2 and DS are still pretty new"
another two years and the PS3 can be considered retro by generally accepted definitions of the term.
If "composite cables" is considered the qualifier for what is and isn't retro... bad news, guys:
That's the Wii, PS3, and XBox 360
Still remember the days of unscrewing the cable from the back of my fatass tv...ah ...i feel so old...
The ps2 is considered retro now? What about the OG Wii? And the PSP. I’m not even that old but it’s crazy to think of those as retro.
S-Video lol. You can get an S-Video adapter for the PSP so you can play it on the TV. It was so cool back then to hook up a hand held and play on the TV now it's like that main gimmick of every hand held.
I remember i'm using USB to transmit the PSP screen to PC then to the monitor on late 10's, forgot which software i've been using 🤣
I feel Korone-san's pain.
We all took that emotional damage
She knows about S-Video? She really is a retro gamer if she cares that much!
Looks at Gameboy color release date, *turns into dust*
Time sure flies...
I think it's about the game design, retro games were designed with much greater constraints, newer consoles like PS3 or even PS2 brought about a new era of game design which isn't built around the same constraints so they're not "retro gaming", the main difference since then was just increasing the number of polygons and texture resolution. It doesn't really matter how old the console is until we break through to a new era of game design.
The PS2 used composite cables too...
*Turns to dust....
this reminded me of the retro sanae comic panel edits/meme 💀
At least they didn't used the forks of the devil like if I remember the NES could have.
I still consider the PS3 new, I remember playing on the PS2 playing Ape Escape and a bunch of Gundam games
Uh oh, my gamecube came with composite cables and I used a s-video cable to make the image sharper so... I guess that's retro haha

Korone trying to look more young not remembering what a "S-video" are, is heartbreaking.
You can really tell Korone’s age from that reaction 😂
Gamecube was the only thing that was well known to use S Video, at least in the states. That being said...I am pretty sure that counts as retro now too...
0:33 "EEEEEHH" 😱
I think it's hard for us to notice that all this time has passed since then because gaming in general just hasn't made much progress. At the very least, there's a noticeable difference between the pre-2000s era, when graphics and technical capabilities were making massive leaps with each passing year, and today, where graphics have arguably plateau'd and kids are taking more interest in games from a decade ago. Really, it seems like the only thing that actually "increases" nowadays are ridiculously over-bloated data-requirements.
insert sanae image: the ps2 and DS are still pretty new...
she's literally that meme of the confused anime girl thinking that the ps2 isn't retro.
