Also, the names are sometimes hard to keep straight lol, it doesn't help that there's a Rhaenyra, Rhaenys, Rhaena, Aemond, Daemon, Arryk and Erryk (RIP to the twins), King Aegon, Rhaenyra's son Prince Aegon, the ancient Aegon the Conqueror, the late Viserys, and Rhaenyra's other son Viserys. These people need a bigger naming book

So you may have forgotten (especially since you didn't watch GoT) but the Song of Ice and Fire is a legend that Viserys believed in about Aegon the Conqueror reborn. AtC was the Targaryen King who united the kingdoms that formed Westeros in the past, and Viserys believed that in the future there would be a person who would do the same against an unknown enemy too powerful for any of them to fight off individually. This is a story he told Rhaenyra when she was young, and his visions of that battle were essentially privileged info only to be shared with the true heir, which is part of why Rhaenyra has maintained that she's the one who should be on the throne.
Shortly before his death, he was not entirely lucid, and believed he was talking to Rhaenyra when he was actually talking to Alicent. He again mentioned the idea of the reborn Aegon the Conqueror being necessary to unite the realm, but because Alicent had never heard of the Song of Ice and Fire, she mistakenly interpreted it as being about their son, also named Aegon. So when he said that, she genuinely believed that he had changed his mind on his deathbed and was calling for his son Aegon to unite the realm in the present. That's the mistake that Rhaenyra was trying to explain to Alicent, and Alicent refuses to listen because at that point it's too late.
