I love how James Gurney's postings are not only extremely instructive and helpful, but often small jewels of thoughtfulness or poetry or philosophy in themselves. Giving us things to feel or think about on many levels. Thank you.
My father was a wooden boat designer & builder, and I grew up in yards much like the one in your painting, James. Dad was always emphasizing the importance of a boat's fair line, that graceful sweep along the taffrail from bow to stern. It's devilishly difficult to get right in a painting. You've beautifully captured it, as well as the way sunlight falls across the complex curves of boat hulls, the layers of peeling paint & multi-colored patches of decaying bottom paint. The keyhole glimpse of the bay beyond really speaks to those dreams of freedom under sail. Thanks for evoking some great memories with your work. May your and your family have a wonderful holiday season!
I am sure many of us would love that, but we also have to consider that perhaps Nancy herself might not always wish to show us what she did. We don't know either way
@@nelsonth Oh I totally agree! I loved when he went through her portfolio on here, she has such a unique view on the things around her and her art is so detail oriented. I'm a fan for sure! :) Happy Painting! ❤️
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, but also thank you so very much for your musings. That story at the end was a lovely surprise. I needed to hear it.
RUclips is a funny old beast, it very often recommends things to me that couldn't be further from my interests, then once in a while a little gem like this pops up. Absolutely charming from start to finish.
My colorblind eyes truly cannot comprehend the colors you're speaking of. As an artist I envy those who can express colors realistically. Absolutely beautiful work!
Watching your videos truly inspires me to keep practicing my watercolors! My grandfather, "Ken Zylla", started with Oil painting later on my mother introduced him to acrylic painting. I want to continue this trend by transitioning to watercolor! Always a pleasure to watch your videos! Thank you!
I like the idea of the 'keyhole view' which adds more visual interest to the composition. Those super close-up views of your brushwork are always so helpful! Beautiful art.
I looks so easy, but I know you need to do it over and over, and as I haven't painted for a rew years I got a bit rusty.... It's not like riding a bicycle 😬 Love your vids, the different techniques.
Hello mr.gurney! I’m actually in the process of preparing to go to art school with in a few years and working on my portfolio and what not and I want to say that you have been one of my biggest inspirations over my art journey and I love you and your content❤️❤️ Pls have a great Christmas ❤️
This reminded me of the movie "All is Lost" about a man sailing alone when his ship crashes in the middle of the Ocean and he tries to survive through it. Just watched it recently for free on RUclips Movies. Solid movie, I would recommend it.
What a great scene to paint! I love Mr. Gurney's realistic urban scenes, including the power lines and dumpsters, but often wish he would paint a "pretty picture." The texture and rustic shape of the boat is incredible, and offers much opportunity for him to express his talent. We used to have places like this in Florida, old marinas with retired shrimp boats, but alas, all has been bulldozed to make way for exclusive gated communities and modern yachts. This reminded me of my childhood, smelling the brine and hearing gulls overhead. I absolutely love it. Thanks for making my day much better.
I think this is why James paints the scenes complete with power lines and dumpsters. Eventually the old places we remember may be bulldozed for something shiny and new. What record will there be of these places and who will care when they are gone?

I was so excited to see your last painting in Greenport (where I live) and was just thinking of commenting that you should check out the boat yard! Amazing!
That is an oustanding drawing, and painting. I design boats, and I often see impressionist painters of maritime scenes, a particular one who was well know enough that he did a Streamline video, and his boat looked like a banana. The banana might have been OK if it had not been drawn against a well know building that was rendered with generally good accuracy. There are items, even in an impressionist painting that should have some purity of line. People live certain things deeply enough that even a rank amateur in art appreciation will be jarred if they see a boat that is a disaster of form.
Wonderful as always - really enjoy so much about this video, but I wanted to specifically thank you for including the ambient background sounds. Really brings us into the moment.
@@RLDSTUDIO Your acrylic painting is getting better and better! From the figurative animal to the abstract feeling, it is very good, and I sometimes paint acrylic paintings.
@@RLDSTUDIO My videos are all easy-to-play sketches, mainly in watercolors. This is not because I am good at it, but because the watercolor tools are easy to carry around. I still spend a lot of time on large-scale oil paintings and acrylic paintings.
Very beautiful. Love ur work as always, one of my favorite channels. I would love to see you go larger, a more serious well refined piece on a big scale.. (16x24) something around there would be amazing. Fingers crossed!!! 🤞🏻 please!! 😭 lol but seriously

the highest skill on the example of this video and others I can say as a representative of Slavic culture, some of us say that the Russian school is the best in painting, I have seen a lot and visited many places on our planet, and I was convinced to measure skill in painting by belonging to the country and culture stupidity , mastery is the gift of the individual.

Best thing in RUclips. So grateful you make these
Wish you would show Nancy's version too. I love seeing what she ends up seeing as beautiful, and the difference between the two.
