I remember watching this Special many many years ago... I Loved the Brilliant rendition of Perry's "Wind Beneath My Wings" So Beautiful and moving... it brought tears to my eyes. It was always intended for Rosalie his wife... although he shared it on the show. I LOVE hearing him perform it! That voice of Mr. C So perfect!! Thank you
Perry was the best--no contest. What you see is what you get. A wonderful guy with no airs who could make a bad day happy just watching or listening to him. He added so much to my life from my teenage years to his last live performance" Christmas in Ireland".
Perry was a great close friend of ours, what you saw is what you got, a gifted, beautiful, talented, gracious person that we will never see the likes of again. He was very generous, I would go to the mail box and there from his office under his direction and of course autographed was a 3 cd set of his new releases. I have a program from his show in Indiana 1991 and he went through and signed every page for me. Perry where ever you are I hope you can hear this we love you and miss you more everyday, especially at the holidays!
Just reading this now, but what a lovely post. His voice was always so beautiful and his musicality unmatched among popular singers. He doesn't get enough recognition these days.
It simply does not get better than Perry Como. Wow! Thanks so very much for posting.Kisses and love to his family. (and to the musicans, songwriters and everyone involved with this recording) This is a wonderful example of why life is so worth living and enjoying. Bravo!
Perry Como was all class until the very end. He made time to honor singers who passed such as Nat King Cole and Bing just to name a few. One of the best to ever do it.
While Perry's version of "The Wind Beneath My Wings" gave audiences lots of chills, it was clear that Miss Jennifer Beals of the Flashdance fame who was such a glorious voice. What a class act she is!
On the Emmy nominated variety program "Evening at Pops" - there's Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles fame who was in the audience. She was very delighted and excited to come along. It was an refreshing change for her. Which is so cool.
Perry Como; what a classy guy. He had to have been close to 70 years old when he sang that song, and still could hit all the notes; RCA should have released that as a single before Bette Midler released the song. Great man, great voice, ego in check, decent guy. More entertainers could learn humility from Mr. C.
Johnny, you're spot on. Bette Midler's rendition is an abomination, especially when she gets to the end of the song. It's almost as if she doesn't know how to end it. On the other hand, Mr. C is so smooth in his delivery with just the right ending. Mr. C stands there and delivers a moving rendition. Buy his last album, "Today," which includes this song. Actually, "'Today," Perry Como's 29th and final album for RCA Records, which contains the song "Wind Beneath My Wings," was recorded for this album in 1987, two years before it was a hit for Midler.
He had several 'collections' of boxed sets of 45's since he was on RCA, as well as 78's before that. Budget-priced Camden also released collections, but actual 12" LP's on first run RCA Victor LP's is probably about 29 new LP's from 1959-1987. There are also collections by other labels, such as "Real Gone" Music / Records, that has a 3-CD set of ALL of Perry Como's Christmas releases, LP's, singles, 10", box sets, etc.
Obviously, great artists such as Bonita who worked on the Emmy-nominated variety program between 1988 and 2005. But the artist who got great ideas to work with music directors, orchestra arrangers/ conductors and vocalists around the world and she's very responsible for that.
Very sad to read some of the negativity directed at Bing on this site, on what should just be about a wonderful tribute from one talented and great singer to another. Read the new info about Bing that dispel a lot of the half truths and mistruths directed at this good man since his passing. This tribute from his friend is truly beautiful....
Perry sounded as if he head a cold, I know he’s old but I’ve heard him singing right up to the end, and he sounded as if he had a sore throat. BUT still excellent.

The best singer pure excellent talented person..
This was Bonita's first American TV debut on PBS' Emmy nominated "Evening at Pops,"
she stayed there between 1988 and 2005.
there should be a sign on this clip saying "stop everything genius at work"

All going to Hell,,, I never knew you.. memories begat memories
Quick question: what is the date of this broadcast? I assume about 1987-88?
According to the Boston Pops website, 1986. Just listening to it tonight.
Bing Crosby was awesome-but Perry Como was without a doubt the most amazing singer of all time!
I would'nt go that far..........
Perry sounded as if he head a cold, I know he’s old but I’ve heard him singing right up to the end, and he sounded as if he had a sore throat. BUT still excellent.
It seemed to me, he was very emotional (near tears and had the audience carry it until he regrouped) when he started singing, White Christmas.
I think Perry is singing the wind beneath my wings to his wife....they were married 65 years before she past on .
+Mortimer That is what I think too , so sensitive , he was great !
Mortimer If that is true, that gives the lyrics so much more meaning and makes Perry's rendition so poignant.
NICE.....JACK ENGLISH...WEST HOLLYWOOD
When was this filmed?
Pain relief ad ?
"Say What?" - Disney's Joely Fisher, March 28, 1985 - present.
