Climbing My First Knife Edge in Scotland's Mountains Glencoe - Dorsal Arete

- Climbing my First Knife Edge in Scotland's Mountains, Glencoe! The Bidean nam Bian Range offers fantastic scrambles and climbs above and next of Glencoe's Lost Valley. In this video we are scrambling up to Gearr Aonach via "The Zigzags" (Scramble Grade 1) and the Dorsal Arete (Scramble Grade Moderate). The Dorsal Arete is quite vegetated in places but the sharp knife edge section is extremely memorable - not just because it was my first one in the Scottish Mountains!
N.B.: This video is a personal memory only.

Stripey, you scare the 5h1t out of me on that knifedge! Stay safe!
I've got wobbly legs, just sitting on my sofa watching this!!
Nice one! Wow, big cajoonas stripey.
Stripey, that’s one impressive climb my friend. Once you’re on, you’re on!🏔️ great filming 😊👍🏼
Thank you very much Craig! Was quite a narrow one over the fine 😂
Cheers
Stripey
MAJESTIC scramble made to look easy.
Thank you very much Paul!
@@StripeyHatGuy Superb channel, many thanks from Cornwall.
Outstanding video Stripey, just outstanding. Love Glencoe but don't have the bottle for that, thanks for taking me along. Keep making these vids!
Thank you very much Rod!
Amazing video as always
That just seemed to pop up from nowhere haha nice one
Wow - you did the full fin! That must be some adrenaline rush, too much for me I think. Beautiful views too. I didn't realise you had done so many scrambling videos - binge watching.
Is a really nice scramble👍 Cheers
Great. Video as always thanks
Thank you very much Ralph! 👍
Thank you for taking me on that trip on your video because that’s as close as could ever get or want to. You are a daring adventurer and I’m in awe of your wild spirit. I am hugging my pillow as I watch and wondering how the hell are you getting back down. 🫣
Don't know how I missed this one Stripey?
Epic is the perfect description.
Thanks a lot Alistair, absolutely stunning tour in Glencoe - even when the knife edge is really short in comparison to the approach.
😲 superb 👏👏👏
Thank you ☺️
Best Mountain in Scotland this done it 3 times via south ridge to summit.. Descending North ridge.. Hoping to do this arete soon.. Well done
Another great video 👍🏻 That looked exposed.
Thanks D.J.S. yeah it was but much easier than the nose a.k.a. easy route. 😉😃👍
Brilliant Stripey! Too exposed for me so thanks for taking me along! Jeez oh is right! Fantastic mate!,,,,,,, Paul
Cheers Paul 😂👍
I had my heart in my mouth watching that 😮 Great video and very daring!
Thanks a lot mate, yeah this one is rather exposed 😎👍
Stripey...sweating man watching you on them jagged rocks, great videos, balls of steel mate.👍🏻🏴
Thanks a lot Paddy, it was really an epic adventure for me the Dorsal Arete 🙌👍
classic winter route this
Hi Richard M1HAX, yeah read about it. So far I haven't had a winter in the Scottish mountains, this year is my first. Probably better to do it with a partner in winter I guess 😎
Wow wow wow, one of the best videos I've seen, superb footage, just beautiful. Love it ❤
Wow! Thank you very much 😊
@@StripeyHatGuy my pleasure
Amazing commitment Stripey. So exciting to watch. Thank you
Thank you very much Serk, that one was really an epic experience! 😊🙌👍
it is also nice to see how different the ZigZags look in summer 😃
What an incredibly narrow arête. Well done to you. Justifiably a classic route. Great video. Thanks.
Thank you very much Charles! Yeah definitely to understand, I think that is as narrow as it gets in Glen Coe.
Cheers
Stripey
“Epic, loved it so much”. Couldn’t have put it better myself and I’m only watching!
Thank you very much Saunters & Stravaigs!
Love it, must do that one.
Hi Richard it is really a super mega amazing tour, even so the knife edge section is really short - in my eyes absolutely worth the long walk in! Hope you get the same experience mate 🙂
Another great video. Excellent drone footage. All the best to you.
Thank you very much Gordon, hopefully I am soon fit enough again (still my back) to do some more scrambles or even climbs 🤞
Thanks
Stripey
Nice one mate!
Thank you very much 👍
Oh dear, why did I miss this gem of a vid? Fantastic, you are taking me in my old age to some of the places I should have went to in my youth, many thanks.
Thanks a lot Frederick ☺️
Holy moly fella! Braver man than me!! Awesome! Well done for filming that!!
Thanks a lot Jim! 😊👍

Stripes, wow only just found you and cant stop watching your adventures, that was a classic,Ive been up in winter in the gully to the left,Broad gully ?,all that scree was what I went up but mate, the arete is another level. Awesome mate.love the journey.
Hi Ged 👋,
thanks a lot! Yeah the gully to the left is the broad gully to my knowledge. Was quite an epic one 😂👍
Thanks for watching!
ATB Stripey
Great video once again. Thanks.
Thanks a lot Alan!
Amazing mate, definitely nothing for me anymore!!! 👍
Cheers mate 🙌👍
Now that looks exciting, could tell you definitely enjoyed it! Love the drone footage.
Thanks Sam, absolutely loved it!
Great video...as usual. Have you tried climbing in the Cuillin. I think you would love it.
Thank you very much Michal! I haven't been to the Cuillin yet, would love to give it a try 😍 - hopefully it works out this year 🤞
Kind of depending if I meet the right people here or my friends back from Germany are over when the weather is good enough 😂👍 as I am not sure if I should do it the first time all by myself...
Cheers
Stripey
Bloody EPIC mate well done 🤣🏔🥾🐺🥃
Cheers John 😂👍
👌 epic 💪 well done can't wait to try this
Hi Donald MacIellan, thanks a lot 😊. It is really an epic scramble, really short in comparison to the approach but definitely worth it 😃👍
Great stuff Stripey, have done it 3 times in winter, never thought of it as a summer route.... might be worth a go, taking in Barn wall on Aonach Duph first then heading over to Dorsal Arete. Fantastic video as usual. 👌
Oh the Barn Wall, looks like we have the some books/ideas. I also thought of the Dinner-time Buttress or some on the west face up and then the summit buttress left flank 😎.
Thanks a lot
Stripey
Another excellent video. Please keep these Glencoe scrambles coming.
Hi Tweed Valley Singletrack, I am sure there are more to come 😉👍
Really enjoying the videos, your drone work is excellent!
Thank you so much Highland Hikers!
Amazing …. Most scared yet out of all the videos
Well done !! Epic is so true
Atb 👍🏽
Cheers Dave 👍
That looks brilliant 😁..Especially the knife edge😁
Cheers Murchie. Hope it helped you also with "The Zigzags" what you can expect 👍
It sure did Stripey….They look well doable for me😁👍
Part of that climb looks like the Shark's Fin route, Meru Peak.
That route is unbelievable mate, can’t wait to try it! Cracking drone footage too 🙌👏
Hi Kev, thanks a lot. Is absolutely an amazing experience. You could actually avoid the knife edge if it would be to wild at almost any time on the grass ledge on the left side. Steep but definitely possible.
Do like the zigzags... Great easy scramble in all conditions
Yeah the zigzags are a great and quick way up - wish they would be longer 😀
Wow that looked incredible. Well done 👏
Thanks a lot Andrew 😊
Ohhh myyyy GOD stripey hat guy !!!
😁
Very nice video! I do a lot on Glencoe myself, I’ve climbed it in winter, never in summer and the Arête is on my list to capture it during sunrise.
Well done.
Thanks a lot Cliff Hands! The Arete during sunrise must be amazing, wish you all the best of luck 🤞👍
I've climbed it three times in winter. Looks harder in summer!
Hahaha, I have my doubt's about that - I would rather assume that you are just more skilled 😉👍
That's far to crazy for me but well done stripey you got balls 👍👍👍
😂😂😂
Love your Glencoe videos - no music just the sound of boots on rock. Drone footage is impressive. What drone do you use?
Hi Tasmanbeach, thanks a lot! I use a Dji Mavic Mini + CPL Filter.
Now that looks a climb mate one slip and that could have been very painful ha ha! The only real scrambling i have done up there was when i was heading down from Stob Coire nan Lochan i took the wrong turn and i ended up climbing down the waterfall next to the B Butress i actually got stuck for a while and i am lucky to be alive if im honest i was a very very lucky daft boy that day ;)
Probably not more risky than crossing the street in a city 😉😂👍. Yeah it is really mad how quick a situation can get serious, had unfortunately the experience twice in the alps (one on a glacier and once with an avalanche).... different story 😉👍
@@StripeyHatGuy Yeah i know what you mean mate can laugh and joke now but see at the time.........👍
Absolutely 😂👍
Stripey...can't stop watching your videos! I enjoy scrambling, but don't know if I've got the cohonnies to do stuff like this?? Have you done any training to get you used to this kind of thing, or have you just got no problems with vertical drops, exposure!! 😮💩
Thanks a lot Stevia 13! I started with going into the mountains like 25 years ago and was a long time active in the German Alp Association (including some climbing, etc. ) so I am a kind of used to scrambles and exposure. And yes I do not have any fright of height's, only a sound respect for height's and mountains 😉👍.
I think the most important is that you scramble nothing up which you couldn't/wouldn't scramble down 😎
ATB Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy Its the climbing down if it gets too hairy that I sometimes freak out at - climbing down backwards on steep ground is very dodgy.. would you have been able to down climb something like the Dorsal Arete? 😮
Yeah downhill is definitely more difficult. Yeah the dorsal arete would be possible in the given conditions 😎👍
I hope to do some hiking in Scotland, but that's one I'll never do. Way too much exposure for me.
Thanks a lot for watching James Smith, can definitely understand it 😎👍
That proves you’re mad (in a nice way) Stripey🤣
Such a great scramble, probably the most exciting in Glencoe 😄👍
ATB Stripey
Great video, my friend! Lovely hiking adventure! The nature is amazing, too.. Those mountains are incredible...Enjoyed watching it a lot! Cheers from Russia, bruv , and how about visiting my channel as well? I've got something to share about camping hacks and tips ! Anyway, best wishes in all your plans and beginnings! Regards, Yuriy!
Don't know if you have come across the Scottish expression " Jing's, Crivvens, Help ma Boab!!" (Google it if not😅), but it certainly applies to this video
Nice one SHG.
Haha I actually needed to Google it John 😂👍. Cheers!
@@StripeyHatGuy Use it the next time you are in the company of an older Scot and are either astonished, bewildered, in need of help or all three 🏴😂!!!
Probably coming Saturday will be my chance 😉😃
