  • Believe it or not, this is the shorter version of the video; there's going to be a part two in a few days. The biggest takeaway is that Gumdo is a generalist style of swordsmanship.
As always, this video isn't representative of the World Haidong Gumdo Federation (WHDGDF) or its subdivisions. These views are strictly those of the master(s) in the video.
Master Bryan Ezawa at the time of this video is a fourth degree in Gumdo, instructor and master certified by the WHDGDF, and the Technical Director of the East Coast Haidong Gumdo Association.

Does this have to be learned in a school or by self study.

I always advocate in person when possible. My answer isn’t the majority but I think if you have good experience in martial arts, the closer to the new style the better, it’s more possible to self train. But if you have minimal to no formal training, in person is the way to go.

It’s Korean! Literal translation is eastern sea sword art, but it’s a reference to the rising sun in the east.

All good! It’s how the Federation chose to anglify the Hangul even if most people would translate it into haedong kumdo.

@@TheSwordLynx very interesting videos. Im fascinated by Korean culture (with the exception of kpop 😫) One of my best friends is Korean and it's always fun to hear about different cultural norms, customs and history.
