#Amilla and the Olive Ridley Project strives to protect the Maldivian #seaturtle population. With crystal clear waters, vibrant coral reefs and globally-significant biodiversity, Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve is one of the most important atolls in the Maldives for conservation. So, Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences has joined forces with the turtle conservation organisation to monitor and conserve our local turtles. The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) is a charity registered in England & Wales and in the Maldives whose mission is to protect sea turtles and their habitats through rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research.
There are nine individual turtles that visit Amilla to feed regularly, and three that nest on the island, according to the resort’s latest research. Nests belonging to Green Turtles are the most common type of turtle nests found in the Maldives. However, at Amilla Maldives Resort, both Green Turtles and less common Hawksbill Turtles nests have been located. Guests snorkelling on the extensive house reef can often see large turtles grazing or slowly swimming by, but the nests are carefully protected.
At Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences, also known as Amilla Fushi, we are leading the way with environmental projects and currently have over 35 different key sustainability strategies in place. These include solar energy, coral regeneration, reducing our carbon emissions, turning waste into wealth through on-site recycling and our Homegrown and Homemade@Amilla programmes, as well as protecting sea turtles, manta rays and white tailed tropicbirds. We have also purchased items for our villas made from recycled ocean-bound plastic, such as wet sacks for your damp swimwear.
