For the most part I’ve enjoyed your channel but I have to say, as a Smart Home RUclipsr I can’t help but feel you’re behind the ball. What I mean is the Ultimate smart home control all comes down to Home Assistant. Homey Pro is something I’ve used for about a year. My view is that home assistant is still too hard for the average person. When it is, I'll happily show everyone how to use it. For now, I'm helping people where I feel I can. I'm not here to show off
I'm using the Hubitat at the moment, and its been great! I purchased a Home Assistant Yellow a few years ago when it was on Kickstarter, im thinking of moving over as homeassistant as it looks to have better community support. Whats your thoughts?
Definitely a huge community on Home Assistant. I like Hubitat but it's slow moving. So I think if you're really into home automation and want to go deep, go for it. Otherwise you're with one of the best already
The video I exactly needed considering I've been sitting on the idea of commiting to Homey Pro for a few weeks now. It was yourself than introduced me to the hardware!
I can give my few examples! Generic Tuya Zigbee devices have been problematic most of the time, unless they are listed in the app for Tuya Zigbee. Specific listings! Zooz's motion sensor zse18 was a problem for a bit but I think that was a repeater from Fibaro. Old Ikea gear mostly comes in and stays connected but is a problem for getting full features. That's all I have so far!
I switched from SmartThings to Homey Pro several months ago and haven't looked back. I did have to replace a few devices for compatibility, but was able to replace with inexpensive products that work just fine. Response time is much quicker, since many are locally controlled and Homey Pro has been much more reliable. Athom is also working on dashboards and my guess is they will be released by the end of the year. Athom also has much more communication with customers. They just launched a podcast. The community is very helpful as well.
Great video! Reliable Homey Pro is indeed, and local! Yes the integration of different brands is limited. Devices from Philips Hue, IKEA, Aqara, Netatmo (radiator valves), INRR (WW/RGB Bulbs and smart plugs), Fibaro (multi sensors FGMS-001 (Z-Wave plus)) are compatible with Homey. Flows and advanced flows are powerful tools to build versatile automations.
Moved from Homeseer HS3 to Homey almost a month ago. It is great to be able to add all the wifi devices that HS didn't handle. All of the zwave switches and dimmers in my home are flavors of Jasco, be it GE, Honeywell or UltraPro. In HS you could not tell the difference in the sub-brands of Jasco. In Homey all the Jasco switches, no matter the flavor work OK. The GE dimmers perform as they should. The Honeywell and UltraPro dimmers in Homey have a dimming scale from 0 to 33%, where 33% is 100% brightness. I had purchased a pair of UltraPro next gen dimmers. Liked the upgrade, just didn't play well with Homey, sent them back, bought a Zooz 800LR dimmer and it has been OK. WYZE is a non-starter in Homey. I make the WYZE z-wave automation through Alexa. Now to figure out RATGDO with ESPHome or MQTT and Homey and solve the myQ issue.
Hey Brian, When you started the migration of your z-wave devices, I assume it was a full reset of the device and add to Homey Pro as a new device? Or is there a quick way to “migrate” them?
Normally assumptions are a bad idea... But in this case you're right. It's a full removal from SmartThings in order to unpair the Z-Wave device and then a full re-pair of them to Homey. Unfortunately, because of security practices there is no easy way around that
I just purchased the Homey Pro for similar reason to those you’ve explained in the video. My primary lighting devices are Aeotech nano dimmers and switches which appear to be compatible. I’ll look forward to the ensuing nightmare that I’ve drawn on myself 😂. Given the level of integration that I have between SmartThings/IFTTT/Google Home/Sonos etc. I’m considering blowing away all of the associations there too to start from a clean space. I’d love to get your opinion on that approach. Thanks for the reply… keep up the great videos.
@billosullivan hey Bill, I think blowing everything away and starting fresh is the best way to go about a lot of this. Capture the automations that you have that are really important to you In a notepad or in something that you will be able to reference... But otherwise enjoy the ride of starting fresh and build slow towards a smart home that works well for you
Maybe good for you to know homey has a podcast online explain the steps with LG and other steps like govee its on youtube now. There are 2 podcasts online. Greatings from holland! Like you videos and longtime homey pro user sinds the beginning.
Kind of intrigued by the link n link ISG as an option. My smarthings v2 is still working but need to decide to replace it newer version, hubitat, of linknlink. Homey is a bit too expensive and limited for devices still.
Hub devs would be wise to build in network sniffing, so UDP and TCP traffic generated by non-standard or headless products could (more easily) be accommodated into a custom driver.
Nice video Brian! Moving away from SmartThings is the right answer, but why not Home Assistant? It’s much more compatible and it’s become much more user friendly.
Great video, Brian. Love the idea of the alarm system automatic on/off. Butnis it possible to automatically lock/unlock the front door (Aqara U100) with presence? That aloneight be worth the Homey hub price. Plus centralizing my automations instead of using Google/Amazon/Aqara. Oh, and Go Oilers!
In May of ‘24 I hoped from ST to Homey Pro. Honey’s advanced flow is what you’re paying for and it’s awesome. I’m not the only one impressed with Homey. LG has acquired an 80% stake in Homey. It’s to early to know if LG will do this merger right, but this is a huge backing for Homey that may lead to good development.
It should lead to lots of good, new integrations and options for us. We'll have to watch that acquisition and what it does for (and against) the Homey platform. :) Looks good so far though.
Long time Smartthings fan since there beginning on the east coast. One of the most important implementations for me is geofencing and Alexa. My routines just stopped working, 100% unreliable. My door contact sensors work but they're listed as off line in Smartthings. None of my location based routines function. I swear everything was so much better before Samsung. The customer service, support, community, etc were amazing at one time. I've gotten so many friends and family into the Smartthings ecosystem and they're having the same issues which has cast me in a unfavorable light. So I'm definitely keeping my eyes on Homey Pro, hopefully it'll do a better job.
The £400 for me is worth it with the reliability you get, certainly for me the running mostly Philips hue has been great, I did have to swap door sensors from Samsung Smartthings but so far its been great
I have iotty light switches and they say they work with smartthings and Siri Shortcuts. I have a homey pro and it doesn’t pick up the iotty switches is there something special I need to do
Nothing that I know of. But not every switch or product works with Homey. Check out our full guide to see how you tell what works and what doesn't. Link is in this video
I keep hearing about compatibility issues with Homey vs SmartThings and honestly I think the problem is the initial switch. When moving from ST TO Homey we all want the stuff we already paid money for to just magically work. Once I got over that and just started buying devices that I didn't buy specifically for ST I realized I could integrate all sorts of things and make them work together in ways ST never could. I can make my Echos tell me when my laundry is done based on my zigbee plugs or my thirdreality vibration sensors. I can check voltage on my fridge to make sure that it's drawing power and constantly cooling. I can do more with the devices I already have, which makes me comfortable enough to add more automations without hitting that "ability wall" because of the lack of ST's ability to play nice with other ecosystems and even other devices within their own ecosystem.
@@AutomateYourLife I've been using the Zooz Zen15 because all the community feedback is that not only is it the most reliable but also can handle the high power appliances. I have one on my washer and one on my refrigerator. I was able to set up one flow that will tell me if the power drops below a certain point and another to use the data Homey collects to make sure my power spikes at least every 3 hours to indicate compressor usage (in case for any reason my compressor dies but the fridge itself doesn't).
I have SmartThings and have been considering moving away. I really want a compelling alternative. That said, recently, I have finally been able to get rid of the smart lighting section under automations and transfer everything to the native automations, which has made performance much more reliable and stable with SmartThings. This means I am not looking at changing for now. What I really want is a cheap mmWave presence sensor that works at between 66GHz and 80GHz to capture minute movements (my current one only warks at 5.8GHz and cannot detect movements below a couple of inches). I really think there is a gap in the market for a competently-implemented and cheap presence sensor that can work on Zigbee or Z-Wave.
@@marct5211 I had found it was unreliable with running certain automations and caused delays and required frequent resets. I was told that the Everything Presence One works great in Homey! I haven’t personally tried it. Someone on Shane Whatley’s Discord page said it has great integration though and provided screenshots of all the different features and settings.
As much as smart things pisses me off, it does get the job done and I like it a lot more than home kit or Google home and Alexa. But I'm loving that the Aqara M3 hub is actually letting me connect other matter devices.
@@AutomateYourLife I have you to thank!!!, because it was you that made me aware of them finally adding the update or feature to allow other matter devices to be connected to the M3 hub besides the very few that were allowed at launch. Using 100 hue bulbs and innovello white new switches thinking of using homey but also trying to figure out how many hue hubs I will need and if one homey will be able to communicate the length of the entire house
I would recommend using two Hue Bridges and linking both to Homey Pro. This keeps the number of Hue bulbs to about 50 per Bridge, which is the recommended maximum for best mesh stability. I do this right now with one Bridge for inside Hue, and another Bridge for outside Hue. Homey Pro talks to both without range problems since it is via the home network. I then add non-Hue Zigbee devices to the Homey Pro Zigbee mesh, and with enough repeater devices, that can cover most home sizes.
@@dvwebster thank you. I plan on having 3 bridges most likely cause I have 64 - 6” slim lights going in and 34 - 4” bulbs each room will have innovelli white switches and possibly one hue switch or dial. Hoping hue bridge is able to reach the outside lights with no issues. It’s a 2,200 sqft ranch so everything is going to be spread out once it’s done being built. Using a uniFi gateway and switch with ceiling access points so WiFi should be great.
Inovelli IS working on compatibility as we speak though. They are pretty active about it on the Homey community pages. I can’t wait. Those are the switches I want to do the entire house in as well.
We do consultations through our website. You can find that on our channel. Also, our members at certain levels have the ability to contact us directly. However, I answer questions and comments always...so that's your free approach :)

My perspective is that it's a high price, for sure. And I did call them out on compatibility being a problem at that price. However, to an average person who wants to do great automation...it might just be worth it
I understand your perspective, but ultimately, the market will determine what constitutes too high of a price. I agree with you. I wouldn't pay for Homey Pro because I use a home server to run Home Assistant. For my less tech-savvy friends, I wouldn't recommend Home Assistant or SmartThings. While Hubitat is fantastic, it's too complex for most users. Homey could be a good option for those who need the user-friendly nature of SmartThings in a more reliable package.
I don't understand I have never had a problem with smartthings never gone offline never had devices off like if you stopped buying cheep devices you wouldn't have that problem 😂 just saying.
If you say so, make sure to prioritize quality over price when making purchases, and you won't encounter those issues. However, I do understand that some people can't afford high-end products, so I genuinely feel sorry for you..
It sounds more like you've sponsored a Homey and now you're trying to hype it up. It seems a bit untrustworthy, because it seems more like you're trying to look for Samsung's run-in bug in relation to Thread/Matter... You had a device issue, you had a network issue... none of the current products are 100% Thread/Matter stable... sorry
It sounds like you don't understand how any of this works. I have to declare sponsorships in the video. If I don't, I'm breaking laws. I don't do that. Your assumption of that says more about you than it does me. So to clarify, I'm not sponsored by Homey (Athom) to say any of this. I'm out here building content for the benefit of people who want to hear the truth. Not for those that make assumptions about everything they watch. As for my "device issue" and my "network issue", that's not at all what's going on. I do this for a living, so I test lots of systems and find out how they work. Other Matter controllers perform MUCH better than Samsung. Samsung is also having all kinds of issues with device registration. These have been ongoing, additional problems on top of some minor connectivity issues with Matter/Thread. Those exist absolutely, but are much rarer with controllers that work properly. If you can get over your "suspicions" for a moment, you can watch my full experience with SmartThings, of which I've been a user for 5+ years. ruclips.net/video/BOx8in5ab60/видео.html. I used to love SmartThings. This is not a "device issue".
@@AutomateYourLife Thank you for clarifying the sponsorship. I use to love your videos, but lately it's turned a little, I can't say why, but something has changed... I still like some of the videos, and I will always support you, however I hope some of the positivity is coming back. Keep up the work!
There are only a few Zigbee channels available that are not overlapped by Wi-Fi, so if your Hue systems is working without problems then it has probably found one of them. So, there is a very good chance that if you use the same Zigbee channel for non-Hue devices it will also work OK. You might be concerned that having two or more Zigbee mesh systems use the same channel might cause issues, but since Zigbee uses Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) technology any device will check that the channel is not in use before transmitting and if it is it will wait for it become clear then transmit. In practice the traffic for most Zigbee devices is extremely low, so there is very little chance of one mesh having to wait for another, and even if it does it will be so short a delay that it will probably be negligible. BTW although it is possible to pair Hue devices directly to a Zigbee hub and not use a Hue Bridge, I recommend using the Bridge. Why? Because Hue devices that are Zigbee repeaters have limited resources and Philips recommend keeping the Hue mesh to around 50 devices for best mesh stability. By using two or more Zigbee mesh networks that are independent, your non-Hue devices will not count towards the Philips 50 device recommendation. This means you can have many more Zigbee devices in total.
I don't know, as I get older (mid 50s mow). I seem to be more ok with just basic things. I have both a samsung and hubitat hub that I don't use. I have 3x hue hubs that are broken down as 1.landscape lights, 2. Indoor bulbs and 3. Home theater lights (for sync). And I tend to just set up schedules within each of the several branded hubs that I have (insteon, lutron, aqara & hue) So, do most people take the time to integrate, or do you just deal with the individual apps? Secondly, what do you do with the wifi devices that use the smart life app? I should state that we use Google hubs throughout the house for voice commands, but don't do any scheduling or automation through them either.

Inovelli + Homey is a no go...sorry!
Inovelli IS working on compatibility as we speak though. They are pretty active about it on the Homey community pages. I can’t wait. Those are the switches I want to do the entire house in as well.
@@tomh3079 I seen they are working on it. I have a solid 7-8 months before the house is built so hopefully by then they get it integrated

I'm in nim in need of a local control smart home hub and I'm thinking I'm going to buy a homey pro
Truly you can get local control out of most smart home hubs today! But Homey focuses on that
Hope your move is going well I also made a video on my upgrade I ping you in my video saying good luck.
Where is it Ethan??
@@AutomateYourLife it my room upgrade
Who is homey pro working with the govee eco system , thanks
Not great for me with local control. Much better through Alexa routines triggered by Homey
@@AutomateYourLife How does that work between the two of them?alexa and homey i haven’t pull the trigger for homey pro because i haven’t found much about it and my eco system is govee ( lights) aqara sensors and alexa ,and thanks for all the help and info

That's a good example of how Alexa and Homey work
@@AutomateYourLife thanks i miss that video thanks for your time and your content is awesome ✌️
Homey Pro is now officially supporting govee
Even with official apps I still cannot connect devices... devices still not recognized...
On what?
I will jump jump to Homey once Inovelli is supported.
Some folks waiting on that one!
I’ve not touched my SmartThings setup for a year or more, just doesn’t warrant the time investment
Tells you everything eh
@@AutomateYourLife it really does doesn’t it
I'll stick with samsung.
If you're happy, I'm happy!
Thumbs down for paying the $400 price...I remember a video from some guy claiming to start calling out corporate mistakes and missteps...
Couldn’t agree with you more!
Now if they dropped the cost of entry to $299.US, I think I may be tempted.
@@AutomateYourLife I agree. As with most things in life, greater convenience and/or greater reliability usually come at a greater cost.
I don't understand I have never had a problem with smartthings never gone offline never had devices off like if you stopped buying cheep devices you wouldn't have that problem 😂 just saying.
Lol you're the only person to say that ever!
If you say so, make sure to prioritize quality over price when making purchases, and you won't encounter those issues. However, I do understand that some people can't afford high-end products, so I genuinely feel sorry for you..
You should share exactly what you use and how you get 100% reliability.
@@AutomateYourLife mate I will keep youtube to you and let you complain about it have a good one tho

Does anyone know, Should I put zigbee devises on the same channel as my philips hue bulbs or keep them different?
Great advice and explanations below. Not much more I could say
And I tend to just set up schedules within each of the several branded hubs that I have (insteon, lutron, aqara & hue)
So, do most people take the time to integrate, or do you just deal with the individual apps?
Secondly, what do you do with the wifi devices that use the smart life app?
I should state that we use Google hubs throughout the house for voice commands, but don't do any scheduling or automation through them either.
Smart Life usually works well with Amazon or Google, but that's about where it ends with those. So you're probably doing everything you can there!
