The Menzingers' Rig Rundown Guitar Gear Tour with Greg Barnett & Tom May

The Menzingers’ albums are storied time capsules. Starting in 2007 with teen angst and rebellion, they’ve refined and reshaped their narratives into self-reflective numbers that continue to balance melody and might. Their most-recent installment-2023’s Some of It Was True-was their eighth chapter that stares down aging with acceptance rather than anger. But don’t get it twisted, these rockers will still charge.
“This record just feels different for us,” Barnett explains. “It’s a really important one in our catalog, and a pivotal moment in our history. We have the liberty of our fans growing with us now, and after writing these lyrical songs about where we are in life, we decided to take other peoples’ stories and make something bigger out of it.”
“It brought us back to our energetic side as a band,” May concurs. “We got to let loose, which is what drew us to the energy of being in a band in the first place. This is a live band-why shouldn’t we record live songs? As a result, we’re back to why we started this band in the first place.”
In support of Some of It Was True, the Philly crew toured the States and touched down in Nashville mid-November for a romper at the Marathon Music Works. Before their headlining set in Music City, both singing-guitarists Greg Barnett and Tom May welcomed PG’s Perry Bean onstage to converse about their setups. Barnett explained the pros and cons of being a left-handed player, while May divulged the inspiration for his loved Les Pauls. Both detailed why they prefer a two-amp rig, and each demoed the various sounds set off from their respective pedalboards.

I like that Tom knew the exact birthday of his red LP Custom. My oldest guitar, a 1964 Harmony H-19 just had it's 60th birthday on January 30th. I thought I was the only person who was geeky enough to pay attention to their guitars birthdays, lol. Thank you Tom, for making me not feel like such a weirdo!

Oh man this was so good. I've been waiting since the guys teased it at the end of last year. So happy Menzos have been featured. Their live (and recorded) tones are just great. They've always been super generous answering questions too on Discord or wherever.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR DOING THE MENZOS they’re one of my favorite bands and they always have such cool gear with them onstage. Saw them in December 2023 and being front row, I loved the roar of those marshal stacks behind Greg. Do more punk and emo bands!

I saw them in Berkley CA before their Portland show and they said they had to go up there after and everyone boo'ed Portland and it made us go crazier in the pits because we wanted them to stay forever. Best show I have ever been too. Hope you had a good time!

I love this band, they are both great and I feel like Greg is one of the best song writers of the last decade in terms of this genre. The funniest part of the interview is when Tom busts out the deluxe and homie is like "wait are you guys talking about telecaster telecasters or deluxes (aka the les paul of fender) in terms of recording" but he says it in a very professional way. Great interview!
