Five Nights at Freddys and the Super Mario movie have proven to be some of the biggest hits of the year. Meanwhile, superhero films from Marvel and DC are floundering. Does this mean that we may see one start to overtake the other in big blockbuster films?

One of the reasons videogame movies/series are doing so well these days compared to back in the day is that back then these movies were put in the hands of writers and directors who probably never even touched a game. These days we have people in the industry who grew up playing these games and understand their appeal.

You could argue that the success of Barbie is part of the same trend. It wasn't based on a video game, but it was based on a beloved toy brand that people grew up with. The Barbie brand may not have a rich lore like Mario, or a strong plot like The Last of Us. But there was definitely a rich history to draw from. And you could tell that the people involved did care about Barbie's history.
That's also a big difference between video game movies today, and the ones made in the early 90's. When watching those early adaptations, you could tell that the filmmakers didn't care about the games they were adapting. That's why the 90's Mario movie resembled the games in only a very superficial level. With media now being created by millenials, Hollywood is now full of people who did actually play Mario when they were young.
But of course, there's also the executives who will just see toy and video game based movies as a new opportunity to make big budget commercials.

The cool thing about video game movie adaptations, is that a lot of them _require_ different genres. Many superhero movies feel same-y, but most video game movies will have to be filmed very differently from one another

Most of The Infinity Saga was based on using very different existing genres. IM1/2 were technothrillers. Captain America was an Indiana Jones/WW2 movie. Hulk is more like the Bourne Identity. Thor is Shakespearean drama, in space. Cap 2 was a conspiracy thriller, and Ant-Man is a heist movie.
This was pretty consistent right up until Phase 4.

Yep. Sonic the Hedgehog was a mix of different themes: road-trip, finding yourself, superhero, action, adventure, family. And Mario was a mix of action, adventure, fantasy, romance, and family. But Mario and Sonic, unlike each Marvel movie, feels different tonally. Sonic is speed and attitude, Mario is about determination and believing in yourself. Sonic always smiles no matter what, and Mario never gives up. Videogames already have a few generations of fans in their communities to make a movie around. So the studio developing the film doesn’t need to do much to hype it up. Fans recognize the characters and the staples of the games already: Mario’s courage and power-ups, and Sonic with his carefree spirit and always smiling no matter the stakes, as well as his signature speed.

Bandai Namco has explicitly said part of the reason they shelled out the money to have George R.R. Martin be involved in the creation of Elden Ring was to open the possibility of turning it into an original multimedia franchise. While it's one thing to consider whether or not movie studios will buy into gaming I think it's also worth noting that many major gaming studios are trying to push through from the other end, and that might also have a pretty major impact in bringing videogame movies into more of the mainstream as the publishers behind these games are naturally going to be much more aware and protective of the elements that appeal to the original fanbase.

I don't think I'm very excited at the idea of more video game movies, but I think that comes down to game movies (and even comic movies) being adaptations. What would be interesting to see tried are movies as partner pieces to video games that either lack concrete stories, have stories told primarily through environments, or games with stories that are so broad a single game couldn't possibly be enough for that story. There's the potential that video games, and movies of that video game could create a cohesive experience together instead of being a different flavor of either with the adaptation route.

Mario might not have been an Oscar candidate, but it treated something that bonds parents and children together with respect. Not exploited, or laughed at, or talked down to, but respected. I think the closer work with the ip owners is the most important part of this. Illumination worked closely with Nintendo to make the Mario movie and market it as directly as possible to the fans, and Blumhouse worked directly with Scott Cawthon to make fnaf, which gave fans enough faith to go see it in theaters.

Between film and TV, I've definitely been noticing a stronger video game presence as of late (not to mention Castlevania and Arcane!). I think they present an interesting challenge for any team, considering how many more changes to character and story need to be done to adapt them. I'd be excited to see more of these cool worlds and stories get shared with a wider audience, but I really hope they dont take the extended universe route. I feel like what we've been hitting lately with Marvel and DC isn't *just* "superhero fatigue" (although I feel the market dominance and genre sameiness of superhero stories have played a role) but also *multiverse/extended universe* fatigue. I think self contained movies/franchises are going to be going stronger going forward

That article is interesting. I hope that means Marvel is planning on making big changes. I do have some suggestions but first I would like to say that when me and my brother bought our tickets for the Marvels, there were only 4 other people there. It could be the time but that should be a sign that audiences have different viewing habits. I'm sure some will wait for that to go to D+. Here are some suggestions for Marvel
      1. Lower the budgets. The Creator proved that you can make a film with lots of visual effects at a reasonable budget.
      2. Give visual effects workers the proper time to complete their work. If that means delaying films and shows then so be it.
      3. Hire more directors and writers like James Gunn who have a creative mind and let them make unique films that can stand on their own.
This applies to all Hollywood, but we are living in the post-covid world. If you want audiences back in theaters, you have to give them a reason to.

Neither Mario nor FNAF were the ‘Iron Man’ of the video game movie movement. I’d probably give that to Detective Pikachu. It had an interesting story, immersed us in the world, likeable characters, didn’t inundate us with Easter eggs and the design was spot-on. Mario and FNAF were pretty mid, but there’s potential and now that it’s becoming the central focus we might get to see where that potential goes.

The Fnaf movie did so well is because the creator loves doing new things for Fnaf each time and try taking it to another level. He has always listened to criticism and advice. For me I already knew this Fnaf movie would not be too scary and had feeling he didn't want to do too many jumpscares since he wanted to be criticized for his story setup. I believe Scott has already responded on reddit that he is watching every criticism and taking in the feedaback. I first wanted a simple first story movie, with a lower budget, and also driven more towards the fans and try his best not creating a trash movie from past from video game movies. I think he succeeded on making it a good movie. He will take that criticism and make his movies better each time no doubt. He literally created Freddy In Space game before th release if this movie with additional footage not within the movie when you beat it in a unique trailer way. He also respects his community so much that he loves each time his fans create new Fnaf Fan games to out a twist on his story and the mechanics of that very game. He has also funded I believe close 10 Fnaf fan games. He also does charities and works with other Fnaf creators to bring spotlight to them and spotlights to his voice actors and people working at his studios. This why I think his future Fnaf movies/games will always keep getting better since he will continue to listen and grow faster than a huge studio can handle. From the lore, to funny jokes, beautiful designs scary and colorful, and to his hard work each year to create new books, movies, multiple games within a year, and always interacting with the community to kepp growing each time. Hope this gives an insight on Fnaf fan from that community on why he is successful.

No the movie succeeded because FNAF is very popular among children, and its box office revenue came about due to all the pre-order ticket sells that made up its bucks.
The film itself is a rehash to much better horror movies that not only lack the horror that made the games so well known but also rely on cheap fanservice reference that only the diehard fans will like.

People may not agree with me on this, but I'd say that along with video game movies, were about to have a massive rise in movie/tv series based on anime. Similarly to FNAF and Mario, i think many companies are looking at the most recent Netflix live action adaptation of One Piece. That show did EXTREMELY well, so im sure most people are gonna try to follow suit. Live action anime adaptations have been notoriously bad in the past, but i think with the success of One Piece and the upcoming live action of Avatar the Last Airbender (which doesn't look that bad), there will be a massive rise in these kinds of adaptations too. Heck we already have a My Hero Academia movie and another Death Note movie in the works. Who knows? Maybe video games and anime will finally be mainstream

I just want movies with good character development and real stakes and a cohesive plot. Video Game movies will never fully be a success as long as there's a movie director involved instead of a fan of the videogame. Directors want to do something different, put their own twist or mark on the already existing narrative which ruins the attempt at the video game movie already enjoyed by an existing fanbase. I think Meat Canyon did a great review of where the FNAF movie failed and the opportunities dropped because the director wanted to tell a story unrelated to the simple premise of the FNAF games.

to be frank, it was really Pikachu who cracked that wall and Sonic who broke it open with two movies and going up against Superheroes for Mario and Freddy to flourish with a third Sonic movie and a show to come out next year or so
and honestly, I see Sonic to be the Best Approach, an adaption, yeah, the first movie seemed meh but setup the foundation for the second movie to expand upon without leaving people confused since it built on the first movie, and yeah, Mario and Freddy are flawed but considering their owners, Nintendo being the equivalent of Classic Disney in term of Mario's image and Scott's style of Story Telling, it's surprisingly they came out as coherent as they are

I love for there to be Nintendo movies focused on their video game franchises, but seeing them all connected in a big narrative or storyline sounds frightening to think about, maybe they can pull it off but it’s going to take years upon years to create an amazing cinematic universe based off their games connected it’s more than likely going to take a longer time than Marvel when they were planning out their universe, for Nintendo to even try going down this route.

I'm open to seeing more Nintendo games getting movie adaptations of different styles, but they should stay in their own realms with the occasional exception of spin-offs that make sense. I'd be on-board for a Donkey Kong Country movie that happens to take place in the same universe as the Super Mario Bros Movie, but puts more focus on DKC and doesn't heavily rely on the Super Mario side of the universe. The fact people want to see a Super Smash Bros movie or "cinematic universe" become a reality rubs me the wrong way because I don't see it working at all.
Super Smash Bros is a party fighting game that crosses over various Nintendo franchises (and some third parties) that is not canon to any franchise. It's a hot take for me to think that Subspace Emissary in Brawl is overrated, but at least it makes sense for a spin-off video game to do something like that since it's meant to be a collection of cutscenes between stages the player's intended to go through at their own pace. The story was very simplistic for what it tried to do, and I can't see critics or fans getting much enjoyment out of a movie that aims too high and misses across all audiences. That doesn't even include statements from the lead director of the Smash Bros games, Masahiro Sakurai, being disappointed that cutscenes from Subspace got leaked online. How do you think he'd feel about having scenes from a Smash Bros movie being leaked on sites like Twitter or RUclips revealing big reveals or plot points?
If Nintendo wants to have movies or TV shows based on Zelda, Metroid, F-Zero, etc, then that's fine. Just keep them in their own separate universes as to not tarnish the reputation of the movie counterparts of these IPs.

I thought the Mario movie was decent for what it was. My main nitpick was the use of random pop songs that sometimes didn't even make contextual sense when they still had so much amazing music to choose from the game series. But I'm afraid Nintendo will now use Illumination to adapt ALL of their franchises. It could work for some of them like Kirby or DK, but I really don't want to see an Illumination-made Zelda or Metroid.
