    Tropical Storm Helene hit Asheville on September 27, 2024. This was after a weather system stalled over the area for a couple of days and dumped a lot of rain. So, before Tropical Storm Helene reached the area, the ground was already saturated and creeks and rivers were already high. The tropical storm impacted multiple states and not just Asheville in North Carolina. Numerous areas of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee were devastated. They are still suffering now, over two weeks later. There were reports of at least 11 landslides along Interstate 40 and a section of I-40 between NC and TN is expected to be closed for a year. Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, there were over three dozen landslides with at least nine resulting in the road surface collapsing. In some areas, not only were the roads washed away, but so was the land underneath it. Now, it's a river. In some places, the rivers are twice to triple the width they were previously. The landslides changed the landscape of some areas. If people want to donate, do so to the relief efforts in the area. Also, unless one plans to help by bringing supplies, helping clear debris, or other similar tasks, please stay away from the area. Disaster tourism isn't helping anything. It's repugnant to monetize and profit off the suffering and loss of so many.

    I have been to Biltmore several times. And been to the village as well. This breaks my heart to see this. I hope they can rebuild everything as it was. It is such a beautiful area. Thank you so much for covering this!

    I visited Biltmore Village in spring 2023. It was lovely. We spent a day at the Biltmore and the next few days just relaxing. We enjoyed all the shops and ate a cute sandwich place. The Christmas store and Blue were 2 of my favorites.
    Thanks for the video. I think the city will be resilient and thrive again soon. ❤

    This is the first November in about a dozen years that my daughter and I were unable to take our annual mother-daughter drive from Chattanooga to Asheville. Thank you for this video spotlighting Biltmore Village. Although it was heartbreaking to watch, I was thankful to see that All Souls Church still looks pretty much as it always did, and even the children's playground there is still standing! We fervently hope that we will be able to return to Asheville next November. It might look a bit different, but it will always be our beloved Biltmore Village.

    Biltmore Village was a wonderfully charming place. It's fortunate that most of the buildings are still standing. Hopefully, they can be preserved and restored. Modern contractors literally cannot rebuild historic structures, and even trying would doubtless cost far more than the funds available. If any building needs to be rebuilt, it will be little more than a Disney-esque caricature of what it once was. Asheville is a tragedy of almost incomprehensible dimensions. It breaks my heart.

    What no one seems to want to talk about right now is that flood control measures need to be taken to prevent this from happening again. This almost certainly means building dams and retention systems to contain flood water and provide a slow release after a heavy rain event. This will not be cheap, nor will it be popular with the people who will need to give up property to build these projects.

    • @mikewalsh5631
      @mikewalsh5631 Месяц назад +1

      @@dhelton40 - I’m expecting massive building code changes, as well. What will be defined as a floodplain will probably be much, much wider. I can’t see any new construction anywhere CLOSE to the side of a stream or river.

    But what about the Biltmore Estate itself? It would have been nice to see the exterior of the mansion that was used in motion pictures whenever they wanted to show wealth and opulence. There are priceless tapestries hanging on walls, a huge dining room, with a very long dining table for dinner parties, and an absolutely enormous fireplace that a group of people could stand inside of without bending down. I understand that, at one time, they use to have tours available for viewing the mansion's interior. I know people who visited the estate, and said that spending the day there was an awesome experience.

    Hi, thank you for sharing the update. We had a trip to the Biltmore in mid November planned and just saw they will open again in early November. We are trying to figure out if it would still be a poor time to come with the area still very much recovering or a positive thing to bring business back to the area. Any insight on this? Thanks

      I would check with local officials. I live here and there is still a lot of clean up to be done. If you stay in downtown Asheville those restaurants and shops are open and need business. But Biltmore village as of today is still very much closed.

    I grew up in a very small town that had a sweet tiny downtown built at the same time . There was even an original town center for plays etc built by Sanford White ( which burned down in the late 1970s) . When l visited Biltmore , l thought it would be a perfect place to live , that was last yr . I would have to really think about it since my worst allergy is to mold . All of those buildings are going to have mold issues. Mold grows very quickly, there was no way that the wet buildings were taken care of and dried out properly.

    It's not as badly damaged as the River Arts District. The question is always, is there a way to rebuild that would be safer from future floods? Having to elevate a very large area would be a real challenge. Were these areas damaged in 1916? They would have been built then,
