- In this next route learning video, we take Metra Train 1279 on a limited stop express run from Chicago to Aurora along the 'Racetrack' route. Stops along the way include Downers Grove, Belmont, and Lisle. The locomotive hauling the train is an EMD F40PH.
You can download the 'Metra' branding for this train here:

This is one of my favorite lines ever! This alone is making me buy a pc even if it is almost 6 years old!
I'm addicted to these videos
Haha, awesome! There's plenty more coming soon :)
oh, so much Nostalgia with that train.
Even though this line is a quiet zone! They still use there horns a few times everyday! They sound there horns when meeting each other at a crossing! Some of them just honk for fun at railfanners!
I only rode the BNSF Metra line once, but only rode the Oglivee West Line to travel to Chicago every time. Of course I’am at least 50 miles out of Chicago.
EMD models going mainly to American companies. Canada’s F40 being the GMD F40.
you sound so british i LOVE IT
As a Chicagoan, I'm always glad to see this route. However, you did forget to activate HEP mode when you set up the train.
I wasn't aware of HEP mode until after I'd made this video. I am aware of it now. I find it odd that the engine basically has to run at full power to provide power for the coaches.
+PTGRail Ah, yes that is odd as the MP-36s that Metra use don't do that. Also, incase you ever plan on doing a run that stops at one of the shorter stations (eg. Halsted), it's worth mentioning another oddity of Metra opperations: the trains always stop with the cabcar on the platform. If that means overhanging the front half of the train, so be it.
HEP (Head end power) is used to get the RPM to rise up and provide power for the coaches.
You don’t usually sound the horn inside Union Station or when approaching a station, just the bell.
I live in Naperville, IL and I love railfanning at route 59 metra station and La Grange
I would love to see this route in Train Sim World
When approaching a station, it's a single short blast of the horn, not two.
Also the horn sequence for departing a station is seldom used. I personally have never heard it used
Thanks for the ride out of Chicago. Most enjoyable.
Thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos.
You certainly deserve a break, hope you have a great time in Chicago.
Thanks Crusher, I appreciate it. Looking forward to being able to take two weeks out to just relax! :)
32:51 Isn't that the crossing where the infamous video of the lady being struck by a train was filmed?
At 27:20, my high school is on the left haha. They did a pretty good job recreating the line.
We go to the same school holy crap what a small world
Will Grimm Lyons township
i wish the sound file for the F40 was better. F40PHs never rev up and down with power application. their prime movers are at a constant 893 RPM due to the HEP generator and speed is controled via the traction motors.
If I was driving a train I would blow the beautiful train horn in the stupid quiet zones.
Haven't been this way for a while, I must say your voice has improved greatly, not so monotonous anymore, very enjoyable video, tysm :)
Thank you, I appreciate it. Not sure when you last visited this channel, but since I started I've gained a lot of confidence, got a new mic, upgraded the editing sotware, and built a whole new PC. I've been working on trying to improve the quality of these videos since day one. Glad you enjoyed this video! :)
Awesome route learning as usual! I was just in Chicago over the weekend :D
Thanks! I hope you enjoyed Chicago? Less than a month until I get to see it for myself now! :D
I did enjoy it! I rode the L train around, but I didn't get to see and METRA trains :(
I did not see the link to the branding of the metra train. can you send it over?
My hometown is very close to this train line and I have had the chance to ride it several times. I am impressed by the level of detail!
My family went to Chicago a few years ago, and my favourite part of the trip was riding the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend railroad, which actually runs down the Main Street of Michigan City!
I might have to check that out for myself whilst I'm there. :)
Well done again. I'm looking forward to watching your upcoming video of American trains and hearing about your experiences when you are in America next month.
Thank you. I don't know quite how to put a video together about my America trip yet, but I'm going to try my best and see what I can do :)
About the same time as you went, I made the SW Chief to Flagstaff. Magic.
After passing Halsted Street station, I remember you said that there should be a speed change up to 40 miles per hour, but you didn't notice the speed board for that.
Actually, the speed board for that is located at the start of the platform at Halsted Street station.
The crossing right before the Brookfield water tower, and where a pre-school is, and with the mini yard right before next to the pre-school (pre-school isn't present in this route) is a very memorable crossing to me. One that neighborhood that is right of the screen is we're my grandparents used to live (they moved out bcuz the my uncle lived there and he wanted to live somewhere else because he just had a baby. FYI, after my grandparents move into my house, my Grandma died in my house, from cancer, luckily she was in a man made comma and she died at night). Also that crossing is the crossing where I saw my first trains. Damn I wish my grandma was still alive and that I would still be able to go to that crossing. :(
(FYI my grandma died when she was only 67-68, she'd be 70-72 now)
+PTGRail Yet again another great Video Pete Im really looking foward for your Route Learning Video for the TGV and the Acela Express Keep Up the good work bud
Thanks Tyler, much appreciated. The TGV video will hopefully be up next week :)

Will you be doing a US signaling video at any point? Of course you would have to contend with the different signaling schemes used by the different companies, but I think it would be interesting.
I plan to, but having to try and make a video to cover different signalling systems makes it quite a challenging video to make!
Great video. I have taken that train hundreds of times. The scenery is very accurate. The next time you are in Chicago, you need to visit the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL. Not that far from Chicago.
dennis figg I've been there before! Very nice
Great video, I am actually going to ride every single Metra line this summer and would love to know when you are going to Chicago.
Thanks! That's cool, I'm really looking forward to getting the chance to ride on US trains. I'm landing into Chicago on the 23rd June and flying back home on the 8th July. I've got no firm plans for specific days yet, just an idea of a few things I'd like to try and do whilst I'm there.
U forgot to fire up the HEP
MEDIUM SPEED is actually 30 MPH. SLOW SPEED is 15 MPH. LIMITED SPEED is 45 MPH. DIVERGING SPEED is 25 MPH.
I travelled on santa ana metro, very similar train. And the driver was sounding his horn constantly at all level crossings.
I guess in that area it wasn't a designated quiet zone?
Neat video. I work for CSX and we take trains from the CSX connection at Western Ave up to Cicero (20:04 in the video). The territory looks extremely identical.
Thanks. That's very cool, I'd love to work for a railway. I'll be checking this route out in real life when I'm in Chicago in a couple of weeks. Really looking forward to it! :)
My dad goes on this train every single day and goes to union station every single day.
I've done this journey in real life and quite enjoyed it :)
I've ridden this route dozens of times since I was a kid. I still love it.
I live in elmhurst and love to ride the trains into union station.
@@jackrosen1740 I live in wheaton and love riding metra
Great Video! My son and I love that route! He would love subscribers.great Metra,Amtrak, Nscales n enroute railfanning videos! Happy NewYear 2..#SnakieMetraAsaurus!
They captured corwirth yard pretty well. Oh yeah the stop is pronounced Lagrange (La-grainge)
Thanks for the info! :)
Cool route but...... why are there two locomotives numbered 113 in the start? this shouldn't be a thing!
Please, a little info on your computer. What are the specs needed to get the smooth animation with all of the image info, quite dense scenery, with little jumping during the run. Thanks, anyone. I also know this area quite well, but never rode on the system.
I enjoy the CTA EL very much and go to ride the system each year with the IRM members.
The way I arrive in stations irl is by 2 short blasts or 1 and I Have to use the bell when approaching and for about 10 secs while leaving. USA Basically has rules about using the bell. Use it into the station at least.
ah 113 a village of Cary if only it was actually 119 only because Cary is home for me
great video I really like that route because I think it's is really nice PS am from Glasgow
Thanks, glad you liked the video and the route. :)
PTGRail no props always in the spirit to reply if a video is good 😃 ;)
If you want good sound packs for american locomotives you should check The Audio Shack for some great sounds
Thanks, I hadn't heard of them until recently. I may well get some of their sound packs in the future.
This is awesome!! You should do one covering the UP West Route (Ogilvie Transport Center to Elburn).
Thanks! I don't know if that route currently exists in Train Simulator. I will certainly be checking this route out when I'm in Chicago in a couple of weeks time though :)
the 10mph limit in the beginning is understandable considering it's a standard Union Station full of other routes, it would have been nice to have all those other tracks filled with other Metras and a couple of Amtraks moving around so the speed limit would have made more obvious sense. Cool stuff though
When I travelled this route in real life, I observed that the train was going faster than 10mph at that point. So either the speed limit in the sim is wrong, or else the driver was speeding!
PTG How long is the route from Chicago to Aurora
You should try a Metro North run to Poughkeepsie from Grand Central just for the beautiful scenery along the Hudson River.
I've been to Chicago central station because I was going on a trip with my dad from Memphis TN
This station in real life be like "TRACK NUMBER 7 TRACK NUMBER 8 TRACK NUMBER 4" very obnoxious lol.
I was at this station myself just a couple of weeks ago :)
can you help with installation of the METRA logos from RWA they won't install for me.
I'am surprised that my favorite city I live nearby is included in TS!
How did you get the in cab signaling to work. Mine won't light up.
Stayed in Downers Grove for a while - know this route well.....
Amazing !
when are you going to do a US signaling tutorial
Your supposed to use your bell when leaving chicago
My goal is to travel all of the line in the course of rhe year to explore new placea
I feel as if this route is home to me- I live in Naperville. I leave Chicago Union Station and I arrive at Naperville.
i loaded this route from the steam workshop and then found it in my standards area and when i went to load the route to play it would not load and got the message game failed to load so why put the game up if its going to fail to load
Do you have all the required DLC for this scenario? I don’t know why it would fail to load otherwise.
which is best to use WinRAR or winzip to download stuff from other rail games such as this one that as 2 downloads also which one is free as ive just downloaded WinRAR as it said free download then it said for new users need to buy a licence
Winrar is always free. It tells us to buy a licence, but you can keep using it indefinitely without doing so.
12:47 Amtrak p42 DC
Next you should do a route learning video in the Northeast Corridor, if you have that.
I've done one already from New Haven to New York. The next passenger video I do in that area will be on the North Jersey Coast line. I still need to cover the Long Branch to Hoboken section of the route.
PTGRail I meant the Northeast corridor from New York to Philadelphia.
Can I suggest the Marias Pass mainline, Sherman Hill's third Main, or Donner Pass for a routs learning? Great video as always!
Of course. I do plan on making video of a passenger run on the Marias Pass. The Donner Pass is so slow it's a route I really have to be in the mood for before driving on it. I will consider the third main on Sherman Hill in the future too. I still need to complete journeys on the Feather River route and the North Jersey Coast route. In addition to that, I'm still planning a run on the Norfolk Southern coal route.
Somehow the Metra branding logos doesn't work. Can you please tell me of what you did?
Incredible relistec 😀😅
it was a 45mph post you missed not 40mph
The La Grange station is pronounced as La Grange with the "A" in Grange sounds like the letter "A".
How did you get the metra branding.
East American Trains I think there’s a reskin that puts it on.
I'd love to see someone do the Metra UP West line.
Forgot HEP.
is there just a normal EMD F40PH in TS 2016? I cant find an HO scale model so the next best thing is to drive it in a game but I cant find the F40 :/
Do the metra Milwaukee West in train simulator
+PTGRail do you think that justtrains/armstrong powerhouse will inculde the manchester to southport? I would love to see that
I don't think they are working on a route in that area. But we may see a route in that area in the future :)
I hope they have this route on trains 17
You should do one on the west line to Elgin
the next stop will be tinley park oak park av.
Great video! Definitely one of my favorite American routes. There is only one problem: I don't know how to download the Metra logos. I've tried numerous times and it won't work. Can you please do a video on how to download them? That would really be appreciated!
Thanks Shawn. It's an enjoyable route to drive for sure.
To install, you simply need to go to your steamlibrary/common/railworks/assets folder. Then find the folder Barnez and then in there the folder BNSFChicago. Then drag your downloaded folder into there and it's done.
PTGRail is there a maryland and MARC Commuter DLC For train simulator
could you do an amtrak possibly from penn any time soon
I will be doing more Amtrak in the future. Got some US freight journeys to cover first :)
If I'm on an American train with two engines how can can I get a view from the other trains can?
is there a train simulator on youtube?
Does The Merta train come with the route?
It does indeed.
113 next to a 113 lol
I noticed that too lol
+PTGRail The VLP that you are sitting next to is the real 113 "Village of Midlothian". Your train, "Village of Cary", is numbered 119
If I know nothing about trains but want to learn, can I learn from this game?
Obviously not everything but just the basics of how to work a train?
moordenaar van sterren yup
That train sounds like a washing machine
Very true haha XD
What trainz can I play this On?
wait I thought this route was 70 miles not 35 (I think u said 35 I forgot).
It's definitely around 35 miles. I travelled on this route in real life a couple of months back :)
You're thinking of the south shore, that's 70 miles.
