    You can think of many different criteria and in many of them Gordon would be branded as the best but in my opinion it's Marcelo Garcia for two reasons:
    -Marcelo Garcia basically created modern nogi game. Big part of what Gordon(who is currently the best) uses is some variation of Marcelo's game.
    -Marcelo was small in size but still managed to compete successfully with much bigger guys. That's the essence of jiujtisu. He even took back of Roger Gracie(although eventually lost)

    • @nukenfry
      @nukenfry Год назад +14

      This is the same argument I always use. Gordon packed on 40 pounds of muscle in 2017 with steroid usage to compete with the biggest guys, Marcelo did it without doing either one of those things. That marks Marcelo Garcia as the GOAT. Maybe Gordon is technically better now, but its your accolades, and how you accomplished them, that marks your reputation. Gordon is undoutably one of the best, but Marcelo accomplished much, if not more, by doing none of what Gordon felt he had to do with his body.

The chance for street fight is low for normal people but for a 6'4 dude it's even lower. Ofc a 6'4 dude would go for dominant position because of his massive frame. He will almost always fight someone either smaller or the same as him (% chance of Roger finding someone taller than him is much lower than me for example at 6' only). What about a 6' dude, around 85kgs trying to fight for "dominant" position against someone like Roger in the streets... idk I don't see that happening somehow.

    Super interesting. My trainer told class point blank that if you focus on the new age leg lock game you could get a black belt in 3-4 years if you’re good. He also said it wasn’t particularly useful in street fights because someone could just kick you in the face. That made sense and my game is very meat and potatoes, try to get side and attack with my arsenal from there. That being said my favorite rolling buddy went deep into the leg lock game and was tapping out black belts consistently (we were both blues).
    But then you look at super high level guys just Imanari rolling other black belts in mma and getting the quick tap. Ryan Hall never beats BJ Penn in a boxing match 🤔

    Jiu-Jitsu is a sport now, primarily, just like Judo. Very very rarely, do you find a martial arts school teaching Judo or Jiu-Jitsu, in America, that considers itself a martial arts school, primarily. You almost never learn self-defense classes, defense against elbows, kicks, punches, chokes from standing positions, and on and on. Since it's all about winning contests and trophies and such, leg locks and various open guard techniques become quite popular. Many of these techniques would leave someone open to being struck. Who for example would let themselves get thrown or slammed to the ground just to get a guillotine choke? On the concrete or hard floor you could be knocked out of disabled if you got slammed to the ground, but on a mat or UFC ring you might be safe. Who would "jump guard" on a hard ground surface for example.

    • @7opher619
      @7opher619 Год назад

      I was jumped by three dudes outside of a bar at my car. I was eventually picked up and slammed on the pavement by one of them. 6'4" and 240 lbs, he thought grabbing me and slamming me, 5'8' and 190 lbs, was a good idea. Due to the way he grabbed me I wrapped my legs around him and pulled a guillotine choke. I ate the pavement, but the only reason that dude is still breathing is because there were two others who started kicking and punching me in the face.
      The problem with BJJ is if you are ever actually defending yourself there is a very high chance it's against more than one opponent. If you happen to be in a one on one fight defending yourself it's not likely to be against a barefisted opponent. If you truly want to be able to defend yourself buy a gun, get a concealed carry permit, and frequent the range.

      A lot of variables here. There are positions where meaningful movement becomes difficult with the leg that isn't under attack, and where the upper body is not a position to generate real power with strikes, or strike you at all. There are also positions where you might take a lot of damage if you don't manage distance properly. But you can find videos of street fights where leg locks were indeed effective. 🤷‍♂️ Should it be your go to? I'd say no.

    what I love about this conversation, is that Roger mentions how heel hooks are great for submission grappling, but not that good for mma. I'd even go further to say that a black belt in anything may not be useful on the street, because majority of the time street fights have more than one against one, no warm up and no weight classes or time limits. Street fights also have weapons and other variables in them that you can never replicate in any martial arts environment as much as someone may say theirs is so much more realistic. Our world is far too civilized these days especially in North America that people forget that true self preservation means survival, meaning that the other person either is critically injured or dead.

    Developing the idea that fighting is the beginning of this sport, one should go further and understand that this sport developed through the need to defend against an opponent who had melee weapons, and hence come, for example, various levers on the joints that basically break the opponent's weapons. This sport can be understood only by those who combine the need to dominate an opponent with a weapon, and therefore have to face an opponent with melee weapons.

    Any competitive art will adapt to the shape of its container such that rules changes create unique evolution. I think it's good and interesting to keep real-fight applicability in mind, and then the fundamental inefficiency in jiu-jitsu training becomes evident, and that is that 80-90% of training becomes passing and maintaining guard, which has the least applicability to self-defense. Open guard is almost entirely worthless in self-defense, and if you are trying to pass someone's guard, you are either the attacker or at a minimum a willing combatant and not merely defending yourself.
    Imagine how much better jiu-jitsu fighters would be in real fights if more of that 10,000 hours were allocated to standing grappling, takedowns, reversals, and staying off your back. More wrestling and less guard, in other words.

    So weird how so many jiu jitsu guys will justify not "likeing" (learning/playing) the leg game by saying it won't work in the street. Maybe people have different reasons to train jiu jitsu, but the strikeless chess match is what we do, what we compete at, is for sure what is the most fun.
    If you simulated strikes the entire time in a roll/match, that would completely ruin the game. Would that style be respectful to the jiu jitsu tradition? No. It would be disrespectful to your opponent.
    How many closed guard attacks that Roger does are always taking account for a possible strike. We all do moves that wouldn't work in the street, becuase the game we are playing is a "gentle"mans game.
    I hope to see the leg game evolve to win championships in MMA one day. I'm a jiu jitsu purist, but a huge jiu jitsu in MMA fan. Even bigger fan of CJJ (where the only palm strike KO was from 50/50).
