Great to hear form you David. Yes, there is lots of stuff out there but it is pretty hard to find when you are looking for it. Be sure to pick up the first three LPs directly from Gerry -- his costs are very reasonable you can't get better than that. Thanks for watching and posting the nice comments Dave! Take Care, Blake
Blake! It's always good to see a video from you. Very interesting stuff. Your channel is always a good introduction to music that's off the beaten path for most.
Hello There! Thanks for stopping by and giving Gerry Hemingway a listen. ;-) Yes, When I find things of this nature that move me the second thing I want to do is share the new findings/discoveries with my buds. Give Gerry a look and listen, I bet you'll enjoy it! All the best, Blake
Hi Blake, It's very good seeing you on here. I am familiar with Gerry though haven't listened to him recently. I have just one of his albums on CD: 'Electro-Acoustic Solo Works 1984-85'. Am curious now to dig it out for a listen now. I don't listen as much to this sort of thing as I did 15 or so years ago, though do come back around to it here and there. I miss our 'Empty Bottle Festival' we used to have here that would bring together European and American improvisers for 3 evenings of shows. I appreciate that about independent artists, often being easily approachable. Yes, Creative music, whatever the genre... Will peruse his site. Thanks for sharing this and good seeing you again. -Carm
Hello Carm! Thanks for stopping by and watching. And good to hear you do know Gerry's work. Yes, dig it back out and give it a close listen. The Empty Bottle Festival sounds like fun. Appreciate the kind words. You take care Carm, Blake
Hi Blake, I've certainly been aware of Gerry Hemingway for a while and have a few of his recordings. When I was listening to a lot of bass players I was also drawn to the cello which in turn led to the cellist Ernst Reijseger who plays on a Hemingway disc called Demon Chaser on the great Hat Art label. As you can see, playing into your idea of how one thing leads to the next thing, leads to the next . . . etc. ;-) Excellent stuff. I also have his Solo Works LP that I found in a record store and maybe a few Braxton things that he may be playing on. Need to revisit Solo Works. I really enjoyed your description of his playing and you are spot on in your depiction of him as a percussionist, contributing to the overall soundscape with melody ideas and pushing the concepts of "rhythm" and "timekeeping" to the limits! Drummers that do this have always been the most interesting to me. DeJohnette and Jon Christensen also come to mind.
Hello Andrew! Thanks for stopping by and leaving the nice comment. Yes, there are definitely some connections with Reijseger which I'm looking forward to exploring. If you like visual stuff please do consider picking up a copy of the kernelings CD/DVD set--it is a very nice package. Good to hear from you man. Keep in touch! B
Certainly! I agree with you completely about how band "line-ups" can lead you into many directions all the while making discoveries. I'm finding that with Hemingway, I'm meeting a whole host of new names I've not come across before... and many are still performing/creating today! Even better, right?! Take Care, Blake
Always interesting to hear these alternate corners of the music landscape.
Seek him out Kris, I think you'd enjoy hearing some of his creative work. Thanks for watching and posting. Best, Blake
NICE!! Another musician I need to check out!!!
Went on discogs and he has a TON of material out!! I'm all excited now!!
