- After 2 winters of learning & preparation, I'm finally back out in the backcountry on skis. I'm joined by my friend Karl (of Sierra High Route fame) for this shakeout ski tour in the North Lake Tahoe area (near Silver Peak).

Dates: Feb 5-6, 2022
Area: Silver Peak, Tahoe National Forest
Route: Pole Creek Trailhead to ENE ridge of Silver Peak
Conditions: high-40F highs, low-20F lows, low wind, sunny, unconsolidated snow

I love that you guys filmed this. I have enjoyed your videos many times over, with the Sierra High Route being my absolute favorite. Seeing the two of you challenge yourselves in a new element is extremely fun- and motivating. I have only skied for a few years myself, and I finally pulled the plug on the backcountry setup recently. After a few Avalanche courses I’m excited to get out there, but after watching this it excites me to challenge that even further and enjoy a winter camp!

Thanks Marty! We’re primarily looking at skis as a better way to move around on snow covered mountains. Both of us have done a ton of snowshoeing and winter camping. So it’s more for the adventure aspect than becoming great skiers heh. Also, I just got my pair of Atomic Backland 85 UL with Ski Trab Titan Vario.2 bindings so you’ll likely see that in the next outing!

Thank you arin! Karl said it was a Leatherman of some kind. My experience is that pretty much any pair of scissors will cut through an aluminum can once it has been flattened.
Hi. I really enjoyed this vid, along with the others watched over the last few years. Your pack list shows that you used the Outdoor Vitals Summit bag, what was your experience with it, and what on your final thoughts on it? Thank you!
Hey Veronique. Thanks for being a long time viewer! It’s still hard to find a better value than the OV Summit 0F bag. It’s not perfect (main complaints are the hood shape and zipper snagging) and there are ways to be warmer for the weight (mostly by cutting down further on weight) but it works! It also comes in a 15F version but at that temperature rating I think suddenly the competition increases and I would also start to consider using a quilt.

I’m a newbie- did you say some skis can weigh 3 pounds per foot? Whaat?
My setup in the video was nearly 6lbs per foot! My new setup is about 3lbs per foot and it’s pretty close to as light as you get before you are on a skimo race setup. Full gear list in the video description if you’re curious.

What brand, model name and length are Carl’s skis Jimmy?
Karl has the Atomic Backland UL 85 at 179cm. I was planning on getting the same ones at a 165cm length but Karl beat me to it, so I thought I would play with my resort setup to feel the difference. I already have the new skis in hand - they’re so light!
