Shawn and Trey, Great facts you guys shared on this album. Wow, they put in a lot of hours in recording, and you are right, the studio became the instrument. I agree with what you guys said that this album is the real innovative Beatles album. I read that someone once said that Revolver sounds like a greatest hits album, that's how great the songs are. I am very impressed with the accurate analytical description in your comments on each track, going into detail on what each song offers. You both are very close in your ranking of these songs being in the same ballpark on a lot of the songs. I like the way you guys explain your reasons for each song ranked. I agree with most of your ranking, but there a few songs I would rank differently. I clearly agree that this album is the greatest album in music history and I agree with your ratings of 10. I also agree that this time Paul barely edges John for the MVP award. You are right about the sequence of songs on sides one and two. It is spot on. You guys did a great job sharing your thoughts. I would like to share a lot of information I read over the years in books and magazines.Forgive me if I am long winded in my comment. The original title for the album was The Magic Circle. They changed it to Abbtacadabra, Then they settled on Revolver. At the time of this recording, when they shared their demos, John said to Paul that he thought Paul was writing better songs than him. George had a hard time getting the lead guitar right on Taxman and after many tries gave up and they let Paul try it, and Paul nailed the guitar lead perfectly, so it is Paul on the lead guitar that you hear on Taxman. I read that it was during Revolver that George wanted to quit the band, and this is in 1966. If I remember correctly, George said he felt he was not needed as much. I guess he felt overwhelmed by the incredible talents of John and Paul. I always thought this was interesting reading these facts. Thank you Shawn and Trey for this entertaining video. I will list my ranking.
14 Yellow Submarine I agree, great sing a long children's song and right for Ringo.
13 Dr. Robert Cool rocking song but not up to par with the other songs
12 Love You To Unique Indian influenced song, George becoming influenced by Eastern philosophies, but a nice melody beneath the surface of Indian instruments.
11 She Said She Said Solid Rock song with great lead guitar and great drums by Ringo.Straightforward Rock with a heavy sound
10 And Your Bird Can Sing This is a classic Rock song , great lead guitars played by both George and P0aaul from what I read, catchy upbeat rocker. This is the song they used as the opening number for the original Beatles cartoons.
9 Taxman Great album opener, the only time a Harrison song opens a Beatles Album, hard rocking song with George being fed up with taxes and writing a song about it
8 Good Day Sunshine Very happy song, so bright and bouncy, so upbeat and melodic, one of my personal favorite Beatles songs
7 I Want To Tell You Great song by George, good melody and harmony, George is stretching his writing ability
6 For No One Haunting torch ballad with very nice instrumentation, a really good one by Paul
5 Got To Get You I8nto My Life What a great song. a high energy song, I read that John was shouting and excited during the playback of this song in the sound room, that's how much this song psyched him up, and I read the founder of Chicago said this song is the reason the band Chicago became influenced to form their own band and use lots of horns, That's how innovative this song is.
4 I'm Only Sleeping One of John's be3st, a classic slowed up psychedelic song with unique backwards tape on the guitar and John managed to capture a sleepy atmosphere, one of my favorite Beatles songs
3 Tomorrow Never Knows An absolute classic psychedelic rocker featuring incredible drumming by Ringo, pounding bass, far away haunting sound in John's voice, a totally unique vibe that is like a signpost for their next album, in my opinion the first real heavy metal prototype before heavy metal was invented. No other band can top this song for it's powerful menacing sound, the Beatles could out rock any band
2 Here There And Everywhere Trey, You make a great case for this being no. 1. The top two could have gone either way, John said it is his personal favorite Beatles song, Art Garfunkal said this is the most beautiful song he ever heard, Paul shines with his most pleasing melody he ever wrote, it is a masterpiece
1 Eleanor Rigby Shawn, I can see why you chose this as no. 1. It is like classical Pop, a masterpiece of songwriti8ng, The famous songwriter, I think it was Lieber, of Lieber and Stollar songwriting team once said he believed this is the greatest song ever written.

Trying to rank an album of this magnitude is difficult because this album is so stacked with great songs. If I could however, personally rank my top 5, then it would be as follows:
    5. Tomorrow Never Knows - Just the fact that the whole thing's backwards speaks volumes. It's a testament to how far they've come since Love Me Do, Please Please Me and the like.
    4. Here, There & Everywhere - Macca as always shines on his balladry.
    3. Got To Get You Into My Life - Right from the moment the horns kick in, you know immediately that Macca's lead vocals are coming in hot and proves it again with this track.
    2. Tied between Taxman, Love You To, and I Want To Tell You - George really starts to come of age on Revolver especially so with Love You To continuing the path he had started with his playing the sitar on Norwegian Wood and even more so with Taxman as that track showed the grit in his lead vocals as well as being the opener on the album. Also, what stood out to me in I Want To Tell You (other than his inspiration from taking LSD) is that he's singing about the avalanche of thoughts that are difficult to say or write down or transmit.
    1. Tied between Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine - The single I think is the big highlight of the whole album. Macca continues the path Yesterday started, this time putting in a string octet and does it so well that he took home the '66 Grammy for Best Vocal Performance. Yellow Submarine on the other hand, simply rocks because Ringo delivers his best performance on this and the sound effects and the singing at the end is just borderline excellent. I think that this song is so good that it made fans want to watch the film and it still delights to this day on.

    9. Got to get you into my life
    8. Taxman
    7. She said she said

    5. Tomorrow never knows
    4. I’m only sleeping

Been looking forward to your track by track review/ranking on this one, guys, and you didn't disappoint! A VERY difficult album to rank because the songs on Revolver are so varied in style, so consistent in overall quality, and even with the diversity of the tracks, there is a cohesive feel to the whole record. I liked your comment about how the shortness of many of the songs leave you wanting more, and this is very true. If I were to pick an MVP it would definitely be McCartney, with an honourable mention for Harrison. Ringo's drumming is fantastic throughout, Harrison's songwriting goes up a notch, McCartney's gift for melody is on clear display, and Lennon's brashness and willingness to experiment adds additional colours. In summation, an album where all of the Fabs shine. I often wonder what this album would feel like if Paperback Writer and Rain were inserted into the track list, or perhaps in place of a couple of the other tracks here, but it is hard to dispute that Revolver is a perfect masterpiece as is. Here are my picks:
    14. Yellow Submarine (you guys hit the nail on the head. Fun song, fits the psychedelia of the album but on an album with so many standouts, something has to be at the bottom. It was nice of the lads to give Ringo a song on the LP.)
    13. She Said She Said (this song, like Yellow Submarine for me, fits on the album but has never been a particular favourite of mine. I think lyrically it has a really interesting basis in reality, but musically doesn't reach the heights of so many other great Lennon tunes.)
    12. Love You To (Harrison's sitar tunes took time for me to warm up to when I first got into The Beatles, but I always felt this was a bold and restrained foray into the instrument, and fits on Revolver beautifully. I used to rank it higher than his follow up sitar song, Within You Without You, but after experiencing Within You on the remastered vinyl of Sgt. Pepper, I developed a new appreciation for it, so now I hold it in higher regard and rank it more favourably )
    11. Good Day Sunshine (bouncy, feel good McCartney track, but of all of McCartney's gems on here, something has to be last.)
    10. Dr. Robert (I always loved that Lennon wrote a tune describing his and Harrison's first experience with LSD, in which their dentist essentially drugged them at a dinner by putting it in their coffee without their knowledge or consent. Maybe not Lennon's best song, but fits in with the psychedelic themes of the album)
    9. Tomorrow Never Knows (the most innovative song The Beatles had done up to this point. Great closer for the album with incredible drumming by Ringo Starr. McCartney's experiments with tape loops was put to awesome use on this track. It's not my favourite Beatles tune in terms of melody by any stretch, but there is no denying the impact of this song and I don't think any other track on Revolver could have ended the LP in a better way.)
    8. And Your Bird Can Sing (I love this song. Lennon thought this song was empty-probably because he puts a very high premium on the lyrics in his songs and rates them accordingly-but this song's groove and swagger makes it one of the most engaging on the whole album. The only thing is I wish is that it was longer.)
    7. I Want To Tell You ( Harrison's songs really stand out to me on this album. They are all so different and well played/performed. The thing I love about this track in particular are the swells of harmony vocals that are both beautiful and slightly off kilter. Add to it that dissonant piano note underpinning the singer's difficulty articulating his tangled thoughts, and that memorable guitar lick, bringing it all together.)
    6. Taxman ( This is the first and only time a Harrison penned song leads off a Beatles LP, and it's hard to imagine any other song being the kick off for this one. The rhythm playing of Starr and McCartney is sensational, George's lyrics are both biting and satirical, and McCartney shreds on those guitar solos. Great song, great opener.)
    5. I'm Only Sleeping (This song creates a mood that perfectly describes the drowsy feeling Lennon was describing in both body and mind-coming down after the insanity of Beatlemania as well as coming down from his then increasing escapism into pot and acid. The washes of backwards guitar really create a vibe)
    4. For No One (This song is an often forgotten McCartney gem like Things We Said Today, I'm Looking Through You and Lovely Rita. It is poignant, painful and beautifully sung and played. A timeless song.)
    3. Elanor Rigby (Can you tell I'm a Paul fan yet? This song is miraculous after the swinging rock of Taxman. Fantastic lyrical storytelling with all the Beatles contributing a lyric here and there, and that fantastic string section providing the song with both urgency and melancholy.)
    2. Here There And Everywhere (What can I say about this song? Absolutely lovely with beautiful harmonies. McCartney at his finest)
    1. Got To Get You Into My Life (I'm not sure if this is a controversial number one...but I absolutely love this track. I love the brass section and the R&B flavour of it, Paul's incredible vocals, and the subtle ( as well as then subversive) reference to pot, its effects, and its significance in the culture at the time. A standout, a deeper McCartney cut (possibly also underrated) delivered with incredible gusto. The fade out at the end with McCartney really leaning into his vocals is fantastic, and like so many songs on this album, is over too soon.)
Great review as always, guys! Keep 'em coming!
If I were to change anything in the track listing, I think I would replace Yellow Submarine with Paperback Writer (sorry Ringo) and She Said She Said with Rain. Ringo's drumming on Rain is outstanding, and I always felt that this song is one of The Beatles most overlooked tracks. Would've felt especially in keeping with the experimental tone of Revolver, but it's hard to dispute that this album is a classic.

Great comment Graydon. And spot on! Love your thoughts on the songs and the album and agree with you on the inclusion of Paperback Writer and Rain. Great video once again guys. Revolver is currently my all-time favourite album. The mix of psychedelia/experimental for Lennon and Harrison and more conservative pop from McCartney. My ranking would be:
    1) "Here, There and Everywhere" - the best song McCartney ever wrote in my opinion. Soft-rock infused with soul.
    2) "I'm Only Sleeping" - a psychedelic masterpiece"
    3) "Eleanor Rigby" - a baroque pop masterpiece.
    4) "She Said She Said" - very catchy and cool song
    5) "Tomorrow Never Knows" - very experimental and trippy song
    6) "Yellow Submarine" - screw the haters, I love this song. Ringo's vocals are pitch perfect here.
    7) "For No One" - the biggest grower. Great lyric
    8) "Got to Get You Into My Life" - love the Motown/R&B feel, though Earth, Wind and Fire';s cover is superior in my opinion
    9) "And Your Bird Can Sing" - a funny and catchy track
    10) "Love You To" - love the Indian vibes on this track
    11) "I Want to Tell You" - a really good track
    12) "Taxman" - very catchy
    13) "Doctor Robert" - really like this song. The guitar hook is really catchy.
    14) "Good Day Sunshine" - it's a fun song, but it's an easy skip. I like the song though.

How indeed do you rank the songs on an album so great? In my view, "For No One" is the most poignant breakup song ever. The one thing more painful than having an ex-lover hate you is having an ex-lover who is completely indifferent to you as if you don't even exist. And I guess I am unusual, but "I Want to Tell You" has always been my favorite of the George Harrison Beatles songs.

Or that Blonde on Blonde by Dylan is just an ok album because it has only sold 2 million copies? See it is a slippery slope equating chart success with quality.

Shawn and Trey, There are a few things I would like to add that I want to share. I thought about the double A side single, Paperback Writer and Rain. Can you imagine how much more this album would have been elevated had those two songs been added to the album. The Beatles were at the peak of their writing abilities on Revolver. In our childhood we had the album Yesterday And Today on Capital. Back in the mid '70's my brother and I saw on the wall of a record store the original first state Butcher cover album with a price tag of 500 dollars. As teenagers we didn't have the money to buy it. I wish we did, it's worth thousands now. If I remember correctly, all the songs on Revolver were featured on the Beatles cartoons, and we became acquainted with those songs in the '60's by watching the cartoons. Another bit of information I read is that during the time of Revolver, The Beatles were so ahead of the other artists and bands that there was no others to compete with them, so they decided to compete with one another, a healthy competition between John and Paul and George to motivate each to write their best material. btw, I want to mention that I think that is a very cool line in Tomorrow Never Knows where John says ' Listen to the color of your dreams '. I wonder what he meant by that. That is unique lyrical imagery by John.

    • @ReactionsToTheClassics
      @ReactionsToTheClassics  3 года назад +1

Great info Poet. Yes that album cover is so sought after but that is crazy money in the 70's! Competition done correctly can bring out the best in people. So much about TNK is special, including that line. Thanks!

@@ReactionsToTheClassics You are right, 500 dollars was a lot of money in the mid '70's. You are right, I agree that competition done in a correct way can bring out the best in people. It motivates and pushes people to elevate the quality of their talents. And yes, I always been in awe of that song by John. The power in the music production and the sound effects and the lyrical content plus his voice makes it the essence of the psychedelic sound and totally unique.

I do not see any musical value to Tomorrow Never Knows. Damn when we were a group of young
Hippie types we were always lifting the needle and skipping this song. We all hated it. To this day I think this is a hodgepodge of weird garbage. With she said she said a close second, from the bottom. John was doing heroin or L S D or both , it shows. Not even close to Here there and everywhere, or even Good day sunshine for that matter. IMHO

Excellent job. I would find this very difficult to do. I really hope this album gets the Giles Martin treatment too.
I don't know if it is quite the same in the states and I think it less common now anyway, but referring to a man as 'she' or 'her' are bitchy and camp slights against the person in question and Lennon was definitely capable of such things. I love the fact that three of Lennon's contributions to Revolver are sarcastic digs at their subjects.

It is such a difficult task to rate these songs. Of course, some tracks are more innovative than others, like, say, "Eleanor Rigby" compared with "Dr Robert". However, that doesn't mean "Dr Robert" isn't a great track, or it doesn't contribute greatly to making this a true classic, and arguably the best album ever made. Yes, Paul does have a slight edge over John here, with the likes of "Eleanor Rigby", "Here, There And Everywhere" and "For No One". I think those three reflect him at his absolute pinnacle, and they are also not self indulgent like some of his later more whimsical efforts. Paul really knew how to express himself vocally at this point. The delicacy of "Here, There And Everywhere" is outstanding. John was outstanding too, though, with "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "I'm Only Sleeping". George's three contributions were memorable, too, although, as much as I love it, I don't feel "I Want To Tell You" is as finely tuned as the others on the album. It has a slightly knocked off feel, but that also contributes to its charm. "Yellow Submarine" may not be my favourite, but I also wouldn't want to be without it - its sequencing towards the end of side 1 works well, and adds greatly to the album's different range of styles. The Beatles just had the ability at this point in recording remarkably brilliant tunes, with fabulous arrangements, without the over indulgencies of later years. I rather like the basic and rather lean 'rock' sounds on tracks like "Taxman", "She Said, She Said" and "And Your Bird Can Sing". too.

  • @PFNel
    @PFNel 3 года назад +1

No finer album has ever been made. My order would be 1. For No One 2. I'm Only Sleeping 3. She Said She Said 4. Eleanor Rigby 5. Here, There, and Everywhere 6. Taxman 7. Got To Get You Into My Life ... and then the second half.

Paul is on She Said She Said. That rumor has already been debunked.
The new Revolver remix has a take with Paul playing bass
With the new remix, Giles Martin said that it is 100% Paul on bass
Mark Lewisohn said it has to be Paul playing bass because of the way it was recorded. There are four people playing on the track so Paul must be playing bass

      @@ReactionsToTheClassics the reason this is a mistake as to what follows;
The "singles" to a large degree were connected to either an album or an ep recording session despite the slice and dice habits of American releases of 12or 11per side, prior to PEPPER
Furthermore Only A Northern song, Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane and Magical Mystery Song were all recorded at same session for Pepper. Suffice to say it could have been a slightly diff. recording.

We are very well aware of all of that. As we mention in the vid we covered this album in-depth in an hour plus podcast, we have reviewed all their albums and anthology track by track, ranked all their songs, albums, and lead vocals. Trust me we are aware BUT the thing is when you tackle these projects you have to choose a method by which you are going to do it. These aren't things we throw together, they are very time consuming and in that we choose our method and go with it. It is an ALBUM ranking. Peace

The best song on the album is probably Eleanor Rigby, but much like Blackbird and Yesterday, I don't really consider this a Beatles song when Paul is the only Beatle involved. My top five:
1- Here, There and Everywhere. Gorgeous melody, incredible harmonies.
2- For no one. The son is right, probably the most underrated Beatles song. So much hurt and pain in 2 minutes.
3- Taxman. The first great George song. In fact, his only song up to this point I really rate.
4- I'm only sleeping. Classic John vocal, and one of his best melodies.
5- Tomorrow Never knows. No need to explain.
Suggestion: The ten most underrated Beatles songs, reaction.

lol we get this ALL the time and it is so not true. If something is best then something has to be worst on the album. Watch the video for some perspective.
